Re: The Review Thread

For years I've wanted to write about Shattered Memories. I don't think I will ever be able to in a way that feels fully satisfying, so here's my best shot so far. https://www.destructoid.com/blogs/My+Enormous+Hairy+Downstairs+Kitchen/silent-hill-shattered-memories-370566.phtml#post I poured far too ...

Re: Samples used by Akira Yamaoka

Forsaken Lullaby from Shattered Memories seems to rip a good 15 seconds from Jason and the Argonauts.

Re: The Making Of: Silent Hill Shattered Memories

Apologies if this has already been posted, but I couldn't find anything. If anyone reading this is near Glasgow, Scotland- Sam Barlow is giving a talk about storytelling and game design at the CCA on Sauchiehall Street, alongside the writers of Tomb Raider and The Longest Journey. It's on Monday, at...

Re: The Review Thread

Of course the tragedy she has is "enough" in the game. And "it doesnt require much to screw someones life up" in shattered memories, because thats how it was written. Thats my criticism. The writing is bad . Its weak. If having divorced parents & a loved one die in an accide...

Fun, cringe-worthy, throwaway fluff is what I'm expecting. Really hope I enjoy it, just can't see it staying with me.

Anyone in Fife, Scotland?

Edit The New Picture House in St Andrews is the easiest for me, but I can easily travel outside of Fife to the Cineworld or the Odeon in Dundee.

Re: Is This Game Killing Silent Hill?

I've always thought that the series forges a connection between the player and the protagonist by making the player feel like the character. James is scared and disgusted- and SH2 sets you up to feel the same way. Shattered Memories didn't scare or disgust me unfortunately, but I felt connected to H...

Re: Why BoM WON'T kill the series

I cannot agree with the claim of the author that Silent Hill has no continuing storyline, because it has. What it does not have is a large abundancy of apparent continuing plotlines, apart from SH1 and 3 (Origins could also be inserted here, though it doesn't establish much that we did not already ...

Re: Why BoM WON'T kill the series

My main concern towards BOM is not the camera or the monsters. The problem is that it's some kind of baldur's gate-like RPG game instead of a survival horror game. The characters have magical abilities, they beat the crap out of the monsters. Regarding the "magical abilities", the directo...

Re: Why BoM WON'T kill the series

I disagree that fans in general are finally understanding that. For Book of Memories , yes; it's not traditional survival horror, it uses old creatures, and it's multiplayer. But considering the prevalence of people who still think TEAM SILENT WAS THE BEST BRING BACK TEAM SILENT THIS IS NOTHING LIK...

Re: Why BoM WON'T kill the series

You have a good point. Personally though, I didn't feel the outrage against the returning monsters like I did for 0rigins and Homecoming, because it doesn't feel like a thoughtless inclusion this time. Before it felt like the lying figures and nurses and Pyramid Head returned because the developers ...

Re: Why BoM WON'T kill the series

It's been really great to see the article resonate with so many people- very gratifying to find a milder portion of the fanbase who share the same optimism for the future of the series. One thing keeps cropping up though, and that's whether BOM is canonical or not. Can anyone clarify this? I'm strug...

Pacing and Tension

This post is going to sound really ham-fisted and convoluted and ...ugh. Sorry. I'm still trying to get my thoughts on Downpour sorted in my head, so none of these observations really form a cohesive argument- I'm just going to air them out and see if anybody on here can relate. I'm really underwhel...

Re: The Review Thread

On my first playthrough (on PS2) I hated it. I hated the twist. I took it as another rehash of the crazy/guilty protagonist, except this one had such a weak reason to be punished that i was actually insulted by it. I also hate that the key to everything was a character we hadnt even met yet & i...

The soundtrack to Machinarium always reminds me of Yamaoka's atmospheric stuff:

Found a review of Silent Hill 0rigins from the same show. If you found the first one bizarre, then this one will be incomprehensible. Make of it what you will.
