The first game--it's the start of the entire series. Don't judge it based on how it looks, because graphics aren't everything and it's actually a very good game.

I'd go with the first, it's my personal fav. Plus, it's the first and will give you an idea of the series.

Yeah after all this time it shouldn't be so expensive. :P Good luck finding it, I hear it can be kind of hard.

It's easier if you start at the beginning and work your way up to the most recent, so you can get a feel for each game in order, their stories and characters, etc.

Yes, it is hard finding older games.
When my nephews broke my SH1, RE2 and 3, it took forever to find.
Your best best, check the local phonebook and search under games, there'll be plenty, call each one and ask, eventually, you'll find a copy.

Ebay can be risky--well buying from any place online is risky, especially when it's an auction site--but I recommend Amazon.com (I'm guessing you live in England? If so here's a link right to it: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASI ... 06-1815035)

Play Silent Hill 4: The Room first. Seriously. Follow that by playing the first & third, then finally the second.

Don't listen to The Adversary. play 1, and then 3. And then 2, and then 4.

No, actually, that has nothing to do with it. The Room only relates to Silent Hill 2, and playing it after Silent Hill 2 would only confuse you further down the line. The first & third obviously relate to one another, so playing them back-to-back makes sense. Finishing with Silent Hill 2, also seperated from the series, will tie it together in its own way.

It would be best if you play 1 before 3 just so you'll get the story lines. 2 and 4 I guess it really doesnt matter.

Actually, doing the exact opposite of this may be a better choice. Though, this would be fine as well.

Since the second game is obviously the masterpiece of the series, I was going to suggest playing it first, to get you into the series. Playing the #1 first can be really confusing, because the game itself had puzzles that a newcomer to the series might think are messed up and have no point or answer. The second game was more laid back on that style of puzzle, though it still had them, to an extent.

I would suggest playing #2 first, and #4 either second or last. In either case, #1 and #3 need to be played one after another. The second and fourth game are more of offshoots of the true SH (cult) storyline (which really isn't all that interesting in my personal opinion).

So, in short, if you are a fan of the cult-type of storyline, you might want to play #1 and #3 back to back, then try out #2 and #4, as those two are just offshoots, and not as involved with the cult storyline as much as 1 & 3. (Though, they still have hints of it throughout the game, especially #4)

All I have left to say is that the story behind SH2 is a masterpiece, and none of the other games are needed before or after it for it to be a complete story in itself. I think they should have more SH games that play on the story of what SH2 revolves around.
