I think there are plenty of good ideas for stories, but a lot of them would not work very well as video games.

I for one do not want another troubled-past scenario. Even that's getting old. Maybe not a troubled past necessarily, but more of troubled morals and personal issues?

Sexuality issues or drug issues, as mentioned above, would work wonders in a Silent Hill game, IMO.

Generally, the people sick of the Order are also sick of the town's history and the "lol native americans." The complaint is generally that it's all hokey and unbelievable at worst, and too eventful for such a small town AND too distracting from what really makes Silent Hill as a town and as a series special.

I've been thinking about this sort of thing for a while, actually. I really love Cyrus Hanley's idea of a cult deprogrammer getting involved in the whole cult schtick. Since most cult specialty deprogrammers are trained in psychology and/or psychiatry, he could play his own devil's advocate in the game, doing his best to understand what the stuff he's going through has to do with his mind and the minds of the indoctrinated.

The other major thing I was thinking: go meta. Have it be about a Silent Hill fanatic, sort of like one of us, who gets so obsessed about Silent Hill that it begins taking over her life. Eventually the Silent Hill universe starts bleeding over into her real world, and she's doing her best to not go completely bonkers. She starts wondering about the SH3 plot twist of (maybe) killing people, and eventually either finds a way out of the delusions, or goes completely nutso and winds up strapped down to a table in a loony bin.

But above all, please stop it with the mid-20s/early-30s caucasian brunette males, Konami, please. Seriously, we've had seven of them already. That's enough.

Sooo...no occult and no person tormented by past sins. Where does that leave us?
Everything happening inside the person's head was done in Shattered Memories (and No Escape, though that doesn't really count).

The town has called those who have committed a crime, either out of mercy or by accident, so I think it would be neat if it could prevent someone from committing a crime.

I've been toying with the idea of a 26 year old woman with abysmal social skills who is sexually obsessed with a 17 year old guy who happens to be asexual. She lets her obsession consume her, to the point of stalkerish behavior, and she kind of wonders just how far she'd go to have him in her life, weather he wants her in his life or not. I feel like sexual obsession from a female's perspective could be very interesting.

Both would spend a considerable amount of time with each other in Silent Hill, working together and discovering more about themselves and each other in the process. Near the end of the game, depending on the player's actions, the woman may or may not see the guy as the person he is instead of a personal fuck toy.

In the good ending, he would look past her stalkerish actions and accept her for who she is, with a possible friendship forming between them. In the bad ending, he would dismiss her as a freak (after discovering what she did), leading her to finally snap into a rage and shoot him in the head. Since she isn't a killer with no morals, she immediately flips out and feels so bad about what she's done that she allows herself to be overtaken and trapped within the town.

Sure, my idea isn't perfect, but I'd rather see something kind of like this instead of yet another I killed someone and forgot about it storyline.

I'd really love to play as an Order member. Doesn't matter the gender or the age.

Though I'm not sure how the story could present itself and I'm not really in the mood to think about anything right now. But religion would be a heavy thing about it.

Oodles. Silent Hill is supposed to call anyone with particularly strong emotions, especially of a dark nature. That gives a much bigger umbrella to fit under than people tend to think.

* Someone so afraid of something that could happen that it's stalling their life
* Someone who is themselves innocent but was brutally hurt in the past
* Someone desperately seeking purpose in life, and Silent Hill gives them one.

* Someone who enters the Otherworld based on positive, rather than negative, feelings: For instance, someone with a strong sense of Agape finds himself walking through the Otherworlds of others, and helps them as much as he's allowed. Sometimes it's not enough to stop the person's self-destructive destiny, but...maybe...

It leaves us in a place where no matter what they do part of the fanbase will be unhappy so they should worry less about pleasing everyone and just tell the stories they want to tell. Which I do think is the direction they have started going in.

What about a game where you control a character that gets pulled into the otherworld, and he sees these symbolic creatures and places and memos and BELIEVES he has a dark/harmful past, but in reality he/she is the friend of whoever the otherworld is revolving around and they are blaming themselves to make sense of it all. When in truth, they are in the otherworld as a cry for help of some sort from said friend who needs their assistance to leave.

^I really like it, but it seems like it would be a pretty hard story to tell. It would make a good book, I think.

Like Mephisto said, I would enjoy a story from a cult member. Maybe an excommunicated cultist who wants to get back in with the group, but eventually learns how evil they are, or a cult defector on the lamb from them, trying to escape notice but their influence is causing the otherworld to follow him/her.

But wouldn't it be really cool if there was a character with an ambiguous name, like Robin or something, and you could choose their gender and appearance like Mass Effect? I'd really enjoy that.

As soon as I saw this idea, I thought "Obsessive Compulsive Disorder", the obsessive thought part of it, which can be a horrible thing (I have suffered from such things myself). You can think of something wrong you did in the past (it could be 7 years ago!) and then start feeling overly-guilty about it, wondering if you should go to jail for it, or if you should tell anybody, when a "normal" person would just disregard those thoughts and move on.

Such a mental illness could be torturous for somebody who entered Silent Hill - very good idea! I know you might not have particularly meant OCD, but that's what came to mind with me :-) Nice.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another idea I thought of - like the early Resident Evil games did (I know it's a sin to mention that game around some Silent Hill fans, though I love those games as well!) they could possibly let you have the choice between TWO playable characters at the beginning of the game and, naturally, have the story lines entwine.

Imagine if you had the choice between somebody like a man (James, Harry) and a child (Laura for example). In the mans version of the game, he would see the messed-up and "gory" Silent Hill, and fear for the little girls safety as he encountered her (like SH2).

On your second play through (for example, lets say you finish the game with the man first), you would then play the girl and realize why the girl doesn't fear the town as much as the male protagonist (due to the little girl having no past sins etc etc...) and the cut scenes/environments would all be seen differently which would REALLY spin me out.

It would possibly take a while for the game to come out, but come on! It's been done many a time before. I wouldn't really want the game to start any Multiplayer though.

^Thats a really cool idea, and its funny that you mention two characters with different perspectives and such, I've been writing a SH inspired story about that very thing.

I like to involve homo/bisexuality somehow. Homo and bisexuals are a large and considerable slice of people in each society and this type of life style is something that existed long ago because it's a nature so why not show a gay couple for example?

Why not show them not in a humiliating way like some films do nor in an extremely emotionally unstable / destroyed way like some romance gay movies do? maybe if they include it as a brief part that has nothing to do with the story majorly? like the problem with the game isn't that the guy is homo or bisexual yet it is mention that the protagonist has a boyfriend or had a boyfriend who died somehow and we get to discover the matter or something else, something totally different?

I think it would be very clever because it doesn't have to be lesbians (like some games did) that looks like a cheap way to get straight men's attention with the (Oh that's hot, lezbo) n that kinda stuff.

I also believe that featuring a mother as the main character would be very nice. Imagine a woman at Alex's mother's age or let's say a woman in 40s/ early 50s who's still hot looking (like Madonna for example hehe) but no over-pornification or nudity unless necessary (like she takes a shower n during the process, the transformation to the other world occurs let's say but the water of the shower first turns black and it falls onto the floor of the tub/shower cabin and the floor breaks in pieces and the pieces get lifted up high n then the walls peel like SH:HC).

They can make her first look like a woman who lives alone and then we learn that she was married and had children and a husband and suddenly each one of them has a certain problem n throughout the story they make us think that she killed them due to the stress but later we discover it's something else ...etc.

Or maybe something like this which I think it might be crazy but using a female character the entire time of the game only to discover that at the end of the game she turns out to be a man who's imagining himself as a woman and he did something terrible, like he was bullied and teased by his family, friends, school mates or work colleagues and he suddenly killed everyone one way or another, releasing an unspeakable rage and somehow he confronts his own demons in Silent Hill and the last thing to confront was that "she" is not a woman, she's a man (and we learn the whole story).

It would work perfectly as a plot for a movie or a video game with an extremely interesting twist and subject.

Something with strong plot twists and a deep and heart-shattering plot.

^It sounds like a cool story. I'd play it, yeah, and a lot of other people would, too. However, having gay people or transsexuals in it would certainly alienate a sizable amount of players, since there are a lot of overly-conservative people out there who find anything "different" to be reprehensible. They could probably run with the mid-40s housewife scheme, though.

What if they went with a Silent Hill 4 approach, and you spend the entire game looking through your protagonist's eyes. You don't even get to know who your character is, their gender, age, or appearance, until the final third of the game, where your choices you've made through the course of the story add up and combine into who you are. What you say and how you act change your personality and appearance, like being overly violent makes you a violent person, helping the helpless makes you nicer, etc. One part of the game where you make a decision, like "which bathroom do I escape out through" decides your gender. Or something like that. :D

i'm thinking that the central plot or ongoings of the cult, the story of the town and alessa is pretty stagnant these days, the new titles all feature seemingly random protagonists drawn to the town. I'm also thinking that the portrayal of the cult so far has not been doing them justice.

a cult member protagonist could be interesting if DONE RIGHT
here's my humble idea: (i'm no story teller, i offer points of interest only)

-master artisan of the cult, at odds with the main sect
-knows well the history and mythology
-protagonist with a hidden agenda (expose/reform/take over the cult?)

-minor ability/artifacts to influence the otherworld (such as claudia and walter)
-explore theme of dealing with the devil, the sacrifices and drawbacks

story should expand upon the repercussions of past titles, how past characters's actions affected (tainted?) the cult

This idea, I love it.
It also leaves for many possible endings, preferably how the main character deals with the loss; and what lead to the suicide.

I'd also love sexuality or gender issues to be included.

EDIT: I dislike the idea of the protagonist having a link with the order; or for that matter the story having a link with the order (some mentions ok, but not for main story). The cult(s) of Silent Hill are shown enough, and to have a new cult would be proposterous. I think it's safe to assume that the cult of Silent Hill 1 and 3 have complete dissolved by now, and the ones involved in the Alessa story and Shepherd story have long left Silent Hill or have died by now (be it in the Otherworld or by natural causes).

please do not be mistaken ......I'm no huge fan of the order, it fact i hate most of it

though i'd wish they could do sumthing new for the franchise, and at the same time return to the main story arc for a bit.

so i thought a cultist artisan e.g. could make a more stylized protagonist and give the plot more chances to connect back to the older characters and story, moreover the protagonist can have his own hidden agenda in the cult, instead of being another random everyday guy without real connections to the town.

(i hope they dun invent new cult sects but instead improve and expand upon the ones mentioned in the past)

think of it as a chance i'd give Konami to fix the shitty cult they gave us so far

We've already had a female protagonist once, but I agree. I wouldn't mind another one as long as she has personality like Heather and Murphy and not held down by shitty voice acting and dialogue.

And I really think Silent Hill has pushed the guilt subplot about as far as it can go right now. I'd really want a more unique story for the next installment that isn't cult or guilt related. Kind of like SH4 I supposed. That one didn't rely too heavily on mental blockades or guilt. Although it did draw inspiration from the cult, it didn't exactly make up the entire story.

I wouldn't mind a return to the cult (or some form of it) later down the road, but definitely not right now. We need more standalone, original stories.
