Silent Hill live is crazy badass awesome. Had the chance to see them in Detroit last April. If you can see them live don't hesitate hah.

Entire band was super, super nice too.

Damn, I'd love to see that. It's expensive getting on and off the island, especially seeing as the boat isn't exactly reliable at that time of year, but if I can afford it I'll definitely try and get to one of the dates.

Don't know who I was trying to kid last night, there's no way I wasn't going to go! I bought tickets to Manchester first thing this morning. I haven't been this excited about going to a concert in a long time.

So, I never got around to posting about this, despite always intending to do so. My trip got off to a worrisome start when there was uncertainty about whether we'd even get off the Isle of Man. The previous day no flights had been able to make it to or from the island and as it transpired our flight was delayed by several hours due to, appropriately enough, fog. Thankfully it all turned out fine and we got to Manchester in time to book into the hotel and get something to eat at Gorilla before the venue opened. I spotted an Alessa cosplay while we were eating too, which was pretty cool.

Getting into the venue itself after queuing in the rain for a while, I thought it had a nice, subtly Silent Hill vibe. Well, essentially it was dark and they'd had the smoke machine on for a foggy effect, but it was still a nice touch. Up until Akira and the band hit the stage there was a projection showing game footage on a loop, with what I think was Henry going through the tunnels overlaid on it, obscuring the action before the main event. This would change change once the Silent Hill Band began, though I was more interested in watching the performance so I didn't pay too much attention to the projector once they had started.

I wasn't entirely sure what to expect when the dates were announced. I assumed the set would probably consist of the songs and the melodic instrumental pieces, rather than the ambient/scary stuff, which proved to be the case. Mary wasn't there, but her replacement (Karina? I can't quite remember now) did a great job, to my mind at least. The song choice was pretty much spot-on I thought and more-or-less what I would have chosen really. 'Wounded Warsong' was an unexpected inclusion, though it essentially amounted to a drum solo to backing and was followed by a weird and frankly inexplicable bass solo.

The sound wasn't perfect, but it seems like great live sound is becoming increasingly rare these days. The vocals weren't as prominent as they could have been at times, but feedback early on suggests that turning them up wasn't an option. The mandolin (used on 'Theme of Laura' and, obviously the Silent Hill theme) was pretty much inaudible once the band came in, but it certainly sounded great on that intro. There were a few occasions that Akira's guitar was a little overshadowed by what I assume was a fairly nasty sounding fuzz-bass (though it could conceivably have been the second guitarist, who surprisingly was using a fuzz pedal for all of the heavy parts). All of that is mere nit-picking though, as it was a great show and the performance from everyone was energetic, passionate and tight, aside from a fumbled arpeggio by Akira during 'Tender Sugar'. It was to nice hear the guitar solos being varied a little, rather than shoehorning the Silent Hill theme into every song. Akira even let the second guitarist (whose name I regret to say I have forgotten) take the spotlight in 'Waiting For You' which was nice to see, and was quite different from Akira's style, being pretty wild and almost akin to something like Sonic Youth.

The only real letdown for me was 'You're Not Here', which on record is one of my favourite tracks, mainly for the guitar work. Sadly that was almost entirely absent from this performance, with the song being played at a much faster tempo and mainly consisting of a vaguely ham-fisted thrash through distorted power chords. Not that I'm against that kind of thing, but it din't compare favourably to the original for me.

Overall, it was a great night and if they tour again I'll definitely be going.

I had to pick this out, because that's by far one of my favorite songs and I'm sort of jealous about that one!

Two songs caught me off guard when I seen them live, which were Letter - From Lost Days and Snake Eater. For two reasons,

A: unexpected as hell and
B: Akira actually showed me the setlist on his phone and on it, it was just 'Letter' and my brain went to 'Letter' from a SH2 audio rip, which was the song at the beginning of SH2 after the bathroom and 'Snake Eater' was only 'Snake' on his phone and I just did not clue in. I do have a photo of the setlist somewhere though.

The extended version of Room of Angel was incredibly beautiful and more of a 'rock' style too.

I do hope someday his tour includes more instrumentals and atmospherics. I can see how it'd be hard to sell a tour that way.
