I am sure THIS is the way the ending is to be viewed.

First they didn't die. The demon takes whom it wants into its world. Cybil was taken to Silent Hill because Rose needed a body guard to get to Alessa (Alessa has no control on the creatures themselves). The cop and Christopher are not taken to SH because the demon doesn't want them.

As for Daliah she is rejected by Alessa, she just roams around aimlessly looking for her daughter but Alessa doesn't want anything from her, she is no longer her daughter. She wants revenge, which she gets, and then at the end she takes Sharon's place. Rose has her daughter, Alessa has her mother, and both remain togheter, but they will not be able to leave the world of Silent Hill. You can see at the end that Rose seems to understand this, as if she knows things won't go go back to normal, you can see it in her face that everything is over but nothing will be as it used to be.

Then again I also think that somehow Sharon will be found by her father in her bedroom, but Rose won't be there. It's not clear really, just that last part.

They may as well be dead. Not in the classical sense, leaving a mortal coil behind. But for all intents and purposes they are gone from the world, trapped in the foggy Limbo created by the power behind Silent Hill.

I don't think Alessa is in control of either foggy or dark silent hill totally, I just think the power within lets her use it and feeds off her rage.

Yum yum yum. Human hand.

I think Silent Hill is just a prequel to what to come...the main story will be Chris. This was a movie just establishing on silent hill.

just a quick thought i had when i read that some ppl think that everyone in foggy SH is really just "dead" (they mentioned the head traumas in the beginning)

if they were dead, then alessa was burnt in a fire 30 yrs ago, everybody died, but then lived unknowingly in a "normal" DEAD world with alessa remaining in the "dead" hospital for 21 years (her hate growing)... it sure seemed to me that the hospital alessa was in the normal world... now, 21 yrs later, the reaper comes to alessa and offers her help -- but first they put alessa's good into a baby (sharon) and deliver it to the orphanage (sharon was brought as a baby and is now 9, 21+9=30).

now, if they were dead, that hospital would have been "dead" too, but unaffected by "evil", for 21 years nonetheless -- that just doesn't seem right. and if they were dead, then they would have to take alessa's dead "goodness" and put her in a live sharon and re-enter the living world to deposit her on the living orphanage's steps.

Honestly, I thought they were all dead too.
The cult, Cybil, Rose. Because her husband could smell/ sense her but not see her when they were in the same room together and such. They were in the Grey world, but what if the grey world is the relm of the dead, (or whatever you wish to call it)maybe?. then theres When Rose made the reference to the cult being "damned". That is mainly what made me think that they were dead, But It's hard to tell anymore after reading everyone eles' arguments. So I lean both ways. I need to go see the movie again to refresh my memory :D
Sorry if this was such a pointless reply, i just had to throw that out there.

I personally don't think that they are dead. I also don't think the cultists were supposed to have died/disappeared in that particular fire, there was probably a second fire. The fire that Gucci talks about, the one where some of the bodies were never found, seems to be one that caused the evacuation of Silent Hill. This couldn't have been the witch-burning fire, the town obviously wasn't evacuated after that one because the hospital (where Alessa continued to live for several years) was still up and running.

Some people have proposed that Alessa died in the fire and that the hospital was part of the "foggy" Silent Hill. This would mean, however, that Rose didn't die in the car crash! Here's what I mean, consider these two possibilites:

1) Alessa died in the fire. That would mean that Gucci found Alessa's dead body. Therefore, bodies don't just disappear whenever the deceased are transported into "foggy" SH. Rose's car is found, empty, at the end of the bridge. If she had been dead, her body would have been there just like Alessa's was.

2) Rose died in the car crash. That would mean that bodies disappear whenever their "ghost" enters FSH. Gucci found Alessa's body, so she wasn't dead/in FSH.

Personally, I go with:

3) Both Rose and Alessa are alive. Living people disappear whenever they enter FSH. As for dead people, I have no idea, and it probably doesn't matter. My personal opinion is that all of them, including the cultists, are still alive. Whenever Alessa finally makes a deal with the demon kid, we see her hell-world starting to appear; I think that is when the cultists disappeared and that there was some sort of accompanying disaster in the real world that caused the town to evacuate and the coal catch fire.

The only people who died are the ones who got ripped apart by Alessa at the end. How the hell can you people think they're all dead? This isn't some Shyamalon piece of crap movie, it's Silent Hill. They aren't dead, they're just in another reality. It's been this way since 1998, why the Hell are you changing your minds now?

They're just stuck in another reality, stop wasting bandwidth.

at the end when people are getting ripped apart by the barbed wire in the church, rose and sharon get down in a corner and rose says "dont open your eyes" or something like that, and then she did and that other little girl was standing there. Anybody else think that they became one? like the little girl went into the other girl? if that sounds right.

an interesting occurence that my friend and i noticed was the rain. ever since rose and sharon enter the foggy SH, there is always precipitation in the "normal" world.

in the "normal" world where Chris exists, it is constantly raining -- in west virginia AND across the country in wherever their home is (in the end when he's laying on the couch, it's pouring outside.)...HOWEVER, i don't believe it was raining at all in the "normal" SH when him and Gucci are searching the school (nor are there ashes).

does anyone think the rain signifies anything? and the fact that it is CONSTANTLY raining ever since rose/sharon enter foggy SH, no matter where Chris is in the country (except the normal SH seemed to be shielded from the rain): anything going on here? :?:

Your theory did sound a little more on track. but if everyones dead to begin with....wouldnt they not be able to be killed again? and the whole time everythings IS trying to kill them.

The eviscerated miner at the chain-link fence is clearly conscious after having his guts spilled out. I happen to think he's been there for a LONG time indeed. Does that not rock the assumption that the trapped people are still alive in the biological sense? Besides, the idea that souls could be "killed" again isn't exactly as inconcievable as many people think... demons in Tibetan mythology devour the souls of sinners to purge the cosmos of evil.

if you have no knowledge, or refuse to admit you are dead, you can still feel pain, etc.

The theory works in my head, I swear.

I can see that i just dont see pyramid head choppin her to 50 peices with his giant sword and her just sittin there in tiny little peices still breathing and alive. the man on the fence was a good point but it still seems a little farfetched.

Well, actually the theory is that the townspeople are dead but they didn't "know" yet they're dead... Thus they continue trudging along with their existence in Silent Hill.

Remember, SH is not just a place, but a state of mind (if you will). Samael is a demon, and doesnt let people off easily.

Rose is still trapped in SH at the end because the essentially killed the cultists, or brought their deaths to them. Which essentially makes her a murderer, thus, trapped in SH to pay for what she did.

Sharron is still there, obviously, because she isnt Sharron anymore. The look she gives the audience in that last shot of her eludes to her being either still Samael in Dark Alessa form, or Alessa herself. So, she is no longer pure, thus stuck as well.

Thats my theory at least, take it for what you will.

As thorough as this theory is, I think this twist has been used way too many times. Too much for me anyway.
