Janitor Does Not Fit With SH's Mood/Theme

Post by maddartist »

...well at least not in the Silent Hill world. Granted he was rather creative and creepy he just didn't look like a creature you'd find in Silent Hill, he looked too humanoid. none of the other monsters in the movie/games look that human.

does anyone else agree?

Pyramid Head would look human perhaps if he took off his helmet.

Yeah, he didn't look like like he fit in with the rest of the monster pack of Silent Hill, but that's because he was specifically created for the film, given his own background story, instead of being just a prop (corpse in bathroom stall) as he was in the game.

He was human too at one point. I believe the other monsters never really had a human form.

I've read that he wasn't the corpse in the game.

I must say though, he was by far the funniest of the monsters... total S&M. Colin, bondage with barbed wire... "Rose, let me out of this contortionist position!" He tried to say "My tongue's fucked from all that licking and she's left me like this for years, she told me she was only going out to buy KY Jelly!"

Personally, I thought he fit in to the movie good enough for me... but I'm easy!

I thought he was a little rushed, not in it enough. Apart from that I thought he fitted perfectly and was a good addition to the movie.

Apparently this is open to interpretation, as Gans gives us both possibilities...
GANS wrote: Hi, there. A lot of Silent Hill game fans have wondered about the nature of the monsters. Are they people turned into monsters or just manifestations of the character's mind? Will the movie answer this question or will it keep the mystery about the creatures that we all find so freaky?

I think that every interpretation is possible. The easiest and most basic explanation of course is that the monsters are victims of the vengeance of Alessa. Grotesque figures of doomed people. People in hell. Another explanation is that they are hallucinations. Monsters coming from the psyche of the protagonists. eg: The Mumblers, small child like creatures ( that we call the Greychildren in the movie,) Harry Mason meets them as does Rose as they search for their little girls. They are not only the twisted figures that inhabit Silent Hill but the reflections of the fear and anxiety of these desperate parents.

The only concrete exception I have made in revealing the origins of a creature is a new monster we created called the Janitor. We see him as a human being (in the past), we see him dead (in the foggy world) and we see him as a monster (in the darkness.) This is one of the explanations of our work. I have said many times Silent Hill is a place where dimensions cross and you can exist in different manifestations. The Janitor is a great example of this concept.

It is true that the Janitor didnt fit in. He was smaller and weaker than the others, never made too many friends. PH laughed at him in the shower after P.E. He thought he could make some friends by excelling at his studies but that just made him more of a laughing stock. His final downfall came when the cheerleader captain told him to meet her in the bathroom for "a good time". She showed up with some barbwire and other "kinky items". She tied him to the stall and then let everyone in to point and laugh at him, several of the nurses took photos as they laughed. He spent the rest of his senior year crying in the bathroom stall and never came out again. (P.S. he has a HUGE afro in the year book photo)

I think he fit in good, given the painful punishment he was given via the position he was placed in, as well as the barb wire!

Although he doesn't appear very menacing...he can't even reach his targets, how is he supposed to hurt them? By expecting them to trip, fall and die as he slowly scoots behind?

I saw him as less of an enemy and more of a tormented soul really. He was scary because of his appearance and his past, not because he could harm anyone.

Well, he did summon the flesh eating cockroaches. The veiny decay that spread on the ground and walls was supposed to represent a venereal disease. It left huge blister-like bubbles on the ground that grew and popped. The cockroaches swarmed out of these “blisters” I believe.

I’m not sure why they swarmed around Pyramid Head, but I don’t think it really had that much significance. You notice in the church scene, the roaches aren’t there, only in and around the bathroom where Colin resided.

He might not be very fast or menacing, but his little friends are. And as an added bonus, once they clean the flesh from your bones, he can mop up the mess!

not very menacing? I donno, as a female, a hellish, green, barbed wire bound monstrosity that wags its tongue and pulls itself towards me using one hand to syphilize the walls and one to call forth Lucifer's pubic lice is menacing. He may not have been moving fast but fast enough to get within 5 feet of Rose. Imagine the degree of VD you'd get from that. Colin being the loser he was would probably hell rape you, kill you, then hell rape your dead body afterwards.
There was a Dead RN here. It's alive now.

There's really no conclusive proof or scene where PH controlled or even called the roaches unto himself. From what i observed, he was kicking the roaches aside as they swarmed over his legs when he was dragging the carcass of one of the miners they have killed. I thought he had simply stolen their meal and they were trying to get it back but they couldn't bring PH down.

Notice too in the scene where he was trying to get into the room where Rose and Cybil where hiding, he doesn't step back and let the roaches finish the job when they got into the room via the hole he made. It seemed like it was a free-for-all at that point and the two factions (roaches and PH) are simply trying to get at the two women first. (remember too how PH had cut a roach in half while he was swinging the great knife around, didn't seem like he cared shit about that boo-boo)
