Why is Harry so Bored???
....After seeing and fighting hideous monsters, and dealing with supernatural forces, he always sounds like hes falling off to sleep; expressing almost no emotion. Considering hes current predicament, he should be scared shit-less.....
Than again, like Cybil said, it "must be the drugs"....

Have you seen a little girl? Short, black hair? About seven years old? A Bastard Child? May or may not be the Mother of God/Satan?.........Shes my Daughter.

If you are talking about SH1 rather then SM then it is a complete possibility that it was simply not within the play station 1's capabilities to express the kind of emotion that we feel.
-shrug-
Thats why I hate going back and playing SH1... I want a remake. Love the story, hate the game.

Poor voice acting. Lack of memory space on the CD. Traumatic experience causing sudden loss of emotional capacity. Take your pick.

Do you want him running around, screaming. "OMG!!! There are monsters EVERYWHERE!!!1!", cause personally, I wouldn't. I think it is a combination of the psone's low resolution and the choppy nature of the cutscene audio.
Besides, I think he reacts as best as he could. He probably was in shock for most of the game, not accepting what was happening. He even admits that he believes it is a dream until the walk towards the lighthouse inwhich he says the transformation was "more like reality becoming a nightmare". From that point on- he does tend to show more emotion, i.e. his encounters w/ Alessa, Lisa and Dahlia.

I don't blame the voice acting or anything, it's just seriously. Come on! What PS1 game has a really "great/interesting" character? I can't think of any. It's the lack of technology. LOL!
PS1 was SO capable of emotion, good voice acting and games with (very) interesting characters.
And I think Harry had the most normal reaction of all the Silent Hill protagonists.

Amen to that!lost carol wrote:Even though the voice acting wasn't the best, it at least had voices to hear instead of a text you read.

It has nothing to do with visual resolution or audio quality.
The voice acting is terrible. That's 90% of it. Whoever Michael G really is, he really shit the bed during those studio sessions. The rest of it is the scripting.
Metal Gear Solid came out before Silent Hill, on the same platform, and it featured characters that expressed much more convincing emotion.

The guy just had a car accident... He is lucky for be able of run around...
I know that the voice actors are bad but harry doesn't sound the same all the time... When the first Air screamer breaks from the Cafe window you can feel susrprise in his voice... When he finally finds Alessa at the park he sounds angry... When Harry and Cibyl meet at Green Lion he sounds a bit depressed...
He has little changes after all...

I'll double that.MGS on playstation 1 was probably the most emotional title back in the day.(Credits to D.Hayter's extreme passion for that )alone in the town wrote:

As for Harry, let's not forget, that most of the time,he is ALONE.I can't think how we can judge Harry's calm behaviour as abnormal, when he doesn't have a clue about where the hell he is,in an abandoned place, covered in smoke with no visibility, and having to use his instict in some cases to find his way out to his missing daughter. The only possible way Harry could explain his emotion would be a long, deep yet powerful "WTF?!?!"

More thoughts from my ever-demented mind on the matter: When I was younger, I didn't mind the wooden delivery so much. Nowadays, years later, I find myself wondering if Harry Mason isn't somehow related to Trilby from the Chzo Mythos games. Harry takes things way, way too calmly for a guy in his situation.

Probably why I enjoyed SH3 the most our of any of them. Gameplay wise.alone in the town wrote:^Or through interactivity. We learn much about Heather's personality and thoughts by reading her reactions to various objects and events in her environment. It's why I love her character so much. She has a personality other Silent Hill protagonists lack. Her voice actor did a fantastic job, too.

The only thing that stood out to me was the awkward paused during speech, but that had a reason, it was inspired somewhat by David Lynch's "Eraserhead" where there's like 13 seconds of silence between lines during conversation. Other than that, it would be hard to make a really ambient game if the characters freaked out about everything. I think they are all in a sort of shellshock, and just accepting what they see because it's all they've got.

Thanks for Heather Morris for doing such a fantastic voice actiong job!
By the way, as seem in the Silent Hill 3 making of, the voice actors would actually "act" the scenes, as opposed of just reading the scripts. Their voices plus their moviments were recorded. So, motion capture actors making voice overs, or the other way around, and so on.

[spoiler]Harry's name isn't Harry. Harry is just a nickname. His name is Harrold.
James' actual occupation is clerk.
Heather smoked until the age of 17.
EDIT - INFLAMATORY - T.
Travis is virgin.
Alex's a uninteresting character.
The bushes in the original SMB are also the clouds.

I think the voices were decent... I really couldn't imagine them any other way because I'm so used to them...
But echoing what has already been mentioned, his emotional range may be slight, but it's not nonexistent: And he does seem to be shocked by things early in the game (the first hanging body he finds, the monster in the cafe etc.) but I think he begins to get used to what's happening around him, and he just continues his mission. Perhaps he's so worried about Cheryl that everything else doesn't affect him?
Also, when it comes to the "other world" Harry always mentions that it seems dream-like. He's probably running around in a haze at those times.

That's what I was just about to say. He probably is experiencing this through a dream-like haze. That, along with the shock of the total unreality of his situation can lead someone to become quite numb emotionally at times.
Sort of a detachment syndrome of sorts, perhaps?
Or just bad voice acting. Take your pick.
