Tha Katan's only available if you got the Good or Good+ ending! I got the bad (which is in reality quite horrible) ending.
Oh and another question, is the rock drill any good against gray children? Thanks...

I personally always went with the rock drill. It works pretty fantastically against the nurses/doctor in Alchemilla. I seem to greatly enjoy just turning the drill on and letting them walk into it.

What? That sucks... Oh yeah, under the bridge right? Or near the bridge station, or what? Thanks, I'm a very, very lazy man...

I have to agree with all the people saying chainsaw. Every time I use it, I think of myself as Ash from Evil Dead.
Grooooveh. ;D
If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one?

You can find out at Lakeside Amusement Park.

Chainsaw for me. However - this is just picking between them; I almost always use the guns in the first game. Mostly the handgun: there is plenty of ammo for it, it's ranged, and rather powerful considering it is one of the first weapons you get.

To clarify, you can test either the chainsaw or rock drill on Grey Children, because they also appear at Lakeside Amusement Park.

Ah - I feel silly ...
[On topic]
I really dislike the Rock Drill to be honest. I don't found it powerful enough.

Next play through I will most likely choose the rock drill. I was seriously disappointed by the chainsaw.

I'm not saying that I hate the chainsaw, but I'm going with the Rock Drill. The Drill seemed like a more powerful and reliable weapon, in my opinion.

To me, they both do about the same in damage, so I think both are ok, but I prefer the rock drill. It actually stops the enemies lol.

This reminds me of the Katana's buggy behavior.
I never managed to kill any Clawfingers in the school with it. My aim went slightly off and resulted in me being gangbanged by a bunch of 'em.
