Contact Ring, Question

Hello, I´ve beaten the game now for the second time and I failed again to check out something that made me curious. What happens when you don´t use the "contact ring" I think that was the name, to tie the chain? I always tie it when I get the dagger and then, when I advance some footsteps further there´s "something" trying to open it. What happens when you don´t tie it? Just some enemy that jumps to attack you or a cutscene?

Cutscene where Harry gets pulled by a tentacle into the cupboard which had been locked by the Dagger which you unlock by taking it. Results in instant game over.
