I honestly think downgrading them for the PS1's technical limitations worked. The first game really is an instance of less being so much more.

The story and gameplay of SH1 is so great anyway, the graphics have never really bothered me....but damn, those images are beautiful. I wonder why they never bothered to make a PC port with original graphics back in the days.
Of course, we eventually got Silent Hill 3 which was in many ways an upgraded version of SH1, even revisiting old areas from the first game. But it's just not the same thing.

Artifacts of a bygone era, but I genuinely love that short-lived artistic approach of painting in faux specular highlights and approximated normal maps into simple textures. Just enough detail to invite your eyes into backfilling detail that was never truly there.
Patience is the darkest side of power.
