We've all concluded that this game takes place in the 80's (most likely 1984). I noticed the game does have an 80's feel to it...and I'm not just talking about the atmosphere and the car models.

The inventory screen looks very 80's to me...as does some of the music. (Most notably the song played when you discover the altar in the antique store and the one you hear on the way to and during the battle with the moth). My question is this...do you think that was done on purpose to add to the 80's feel? Or do you think that's just how it came out?

1983

I believe it was intentional. Given that the school and hospital are very low-tech by 99's standards, I don't believe there was any way for them not to develop it that way without putting any thought into it.

I don't think they had a specific decade in mind, but I do think they intentionally gave it an "old" feel because of the size of the town. I used to live in Topeka Kansas in '99 and occasionally when I went to the next town over it was like I walked through a time warp or something. I'm not sure what it is about small towns, but they always seems to be ages.

I meant more of the mechanical aspects of the game than what the town looked like. I just thought the inventory/menu/load game screens looked very 80's as did the music to me.

Off-topic for a sec...where is it officially stated that SH2 is about a decade or so after SH1? I know SH2 is a decade prior to SH4, due to Frank's comment, but what about SH2 in comparison to 1?

It isn't. I figured that out for myself.

How'd you reach that conclusion?

Silent Hill 4 takes place in a more present time: 2004.
Silent Hill 2 occurs ten years before: 1994.
Silent Hill 3 takes place a few years before Silent Hill 4: 2000.
Silent Hill 1 occurs seventeen years that: 1983.

Ah...I was thinking more 84, 94, 01, and 04...but I see where you're coming from.

Fantastic idea - that SH1 in based in the 80's. You could also argue that this is the case when you look at the "technology" available - check out the style of the phone which Harry answers in one of the classrooms. The decor and everything reminds me very much of my own Primary School. :!:

The phone was a good point. It looks "old". Not only the phone but the tables in the classroom, the laboratory, the chairs, etc.

The hospital looks quite old too, but you can never know. All hospitals look old. :)

Think of Italy — which reminds me of California in so many ways — and its chronic inability to form a government. That’s California, with even better food and no parliamentary system.

I don't know if they did it intentionally, but placing the first one in the 80's gave heather time to grow up for the third game without having the series start to take place in the future. On a side note this must mean that silent hill the movie is set in the wrong time period. Concidering the cell phone in the previews. Although, there are quite a few inconsistencies with the games, presumably done for a reason...

The movie is a branch off of the games - an adaptation, if you will. So therefore it's not all too upsetting to have a few inconsistencies with the movie. The film isn't supposed to be taking SH1's place.

I don't think the initial intention of the developers was to set the game in any specific decade, to be honest. I thought they designed everything all low-tech to give it...almost a timeless feel, and to add to the theme of the town being old, quiet, set in its ways.

But now that there are sequels, it all makes sense for SH1 to be set in 1983.

And SH is one of the only series' I've seen in recent years where all of the games are set in chronological order.

funny, i didn't consciously realise it was based in the 80s, but i always remember it as being "dated" and just figured it was because it was on PS1 not PS2. wow. pretty cool now that it's been pointed out.

Any idea of the style of the cars being driven around? Especially the cop car, as police tend to have more 'current' cars much of the time (though generally not brand-spankin' new). That could give a big clue to the setting of the first game.

The cop car looks like a Ford Crown Victoria ´81, but smaller.

There are Portishead posters in the 5to2 Cafe.

Portishead was a band formed in 1991.
