Tarot

Post by Teimoshi »

Now as far as I know, there is no Silent Hill themed Tarot Card set. So don't ask where you can find it.

I got the idea after finding a Lovecraft themed Tarot set at Hastings the other day. So I thought it'd be cool to make our own Silent Hill themed set based on Silent Pyramid's findings.

Now honestly, I don't know how to play the tarot, but I do know the ordering. Personally, I think the ghost versions of the characters should go.

What are your opinions on this idea? You think it will work?

If I'm not mistaken, the Translated Book of Lost Memories ties characters from Silent Hill to the Tarot Deck... Magician-Valtiel, Judgment-PH, High Priestess-Dahlia/Claudia, The Fool-Heather, Hermit-Douglas, Hanged Man-James, etc.

The God is tied to a fictitious Tarot card called by Team Silent as the Eye of Night

Well, I was thinking more along the lines of the Walter Sullivan Case because (1) we could use the pics of the undead victims, (2) it is more iconic.

Regardless, we can't do that version because it also ties in with some abstract elements as well such as love.

As for the Eye of Night card, it can be safe to assume that it isn't within the original deck of 22 cards and is in the lesser deck of 52 cards.

The lesser deck contains four suits and works like a regular deck of cards. However, this analysis will need to be looked into.

>As for the Eye of Night card
It doesn't exist. At all. It's a creation of Team Silent.

>we could use the pics of the undead victims
There aren't pictures for all of the ghosts--and that wouldn't really be a Silent Hill--Tarot deck, that would be a Silent Hill 4: The Room--the Tarot deck.

I like the idea. I have a Final Fantasy 10 tarot deck, so a Silent Hill one would be awesome. I will grab my tarot deck and think about who could go to what card and post my ideas later.

I thought of this awhile ago and mentioned it, but yet again the Search function FAILS. I never got around the photoshopping them tho.

Some of my ideas:
The sun: Halo of the sun
The devil or Death: PH
Is "The Tower" an actual card? If so, the Hope House orphanage from SH4
Life: Cheryl or Heather
Just to mention a few.
"That town. That God forsaken town. It just, keeps, calling me back..."

I. The Magician -- Valtiel
II. The High Priestess -- Claudia Wolf
III. The Empress -- Alessa Gillespie
IV. The Emperor -- Harry Mason
V. The Hierophant -- Travis Grady
VI. The Lovers -- Henry Townsend and Eileen Galvin*
VII. The Chariot -- Lisa Garland
VIII. Strength -- Laura
IX. The Hermit -- Father Vincent
X. Wheel Of Fortune -- The Halo of the Sun
XI. Justice -- the red pyramid things
XII. The Hanged Man -- James Sunderland
XIII. Death -- Walter Sullivan
XIV. Temperance -- Douglas Cartland
XV. The Devil -- the Holy Mother, Lord of Serpents & Reeds
XVI. The Tower -- Silent Hill
XVII. The Star -- Mary Sheperd-Sunderland
XVIII. The Moon -- Angela Orosco
XIX. The Sun -- Robbie the Rabbit
XX. The Last Judgment -- Maria
XXI. The World -- Ashfield
O. The Fool -- Heather Mason

* Note. This is not to say I believe they have any romantic interest w/ one another at the onset of the story, only that they develop a personal relationship afterward, given the ending. Also note the meaning of VI. The Lovers card: "Attraction, love, beauty, trials overcome."

I'm going to make a few tweaks to yours, Thomas. Hope you don't mind. :)

I. The Magician -- Dahlia Gillespie
II. The High Priestess -- Claudia Wolf
III. The Empress -- Alessa Gillespie
IV. The Emperor -- Harry Mason
V. The Hierophant -- Travis Grady
VI. The Lovers -- I would go more James and Mary here
VII. The Chariot -- Lisa Garland
VIII. Strength -- Heather
IX. The Hermit -- Father Vincent
X. Wheel Of Fortune -- The Halo of the Sun
XI. Justice -- the red pyramid things
XII. The Hanged Man -- James Sunderland
XIII. Death -- Walter Sullivan
XIV. Temperance -- Douglas Cartland
XV. The Devil -- Valtiel
XVI. The Tower -- Brookhaven, since so many of the games have it.
XVII. The Star -- Mary Sheperd-Sunderland
XVIII. The Moon -- Angela Orosco
XIX. The Sun -- Laura
XX. The Last Judgment -- Maria
XXI. The World -- Silent Hill
O. The Fool -- Harry Mason

I will probably do that over again later. Those are what popped into my head for now.

I'm gonna have to disagree.

>VI. The Lovers -- I would go more James and Mary here
But James and Mary never overcome a trial together, as the card's meaning indicates.

>IV. The Emperor -- Harry Mason
>O. The Fool -- Harry Mason
You have him on twice, and Harry's definitely not O. The Fool--he's not anything the card represents, really.

>VIII. Strength -- Heather
I really wouldn't say Heather is courageous--she's terrified and her only intent is revenge.

>XV. The Devil -- Valtiel
Valtiel's not violent. The god is more representative of the card than Valtiel.

>XVI. The Tower -- Brookhaven, since so many of the games have it.
Only two of 'em do. All of 'em have Silent Hill--and the town sounds more like "misery, distress, ruin, indigence, adversity, calamity, disgrace, and deception." Even when reversed: "the same in a lesser degree, also oppression, imprisonment, tyranny."

>XXI. The World -- Silent Hill
Similarly, XXI. The World is indicative of "assured success . . . change of place." Entering Silent Hill is no guarantee you'll come out alive.

Heather would definitely fit the Fool card as the Fool is often portrayed as a fellow about to topple unknowingly into a cliff... signifying embarking on a journey of self-discovery

Tom, I think the Red Pyramid fits the Judgment card more than the Justice (which Maria would have fit better). After all, PH was created as a means of expression of guilt and self-loathing rather than actual punishment.

also, wouldn't Laura fit the Sun card better?

I figured Harry for the fool, since that is exactly what he was played for.
True, Mary and James never overcame their ultimate obstacle together, but they work better than Eileen and Henry.
Maybe Heather would not be Strength, but she did have the strength to overcome her past, and now she must have the strength to make it on her own.
I think I got Valitiel mixed up with someone else. Who was the red devil again?

>I think the Red Pyramid fits the Judgment card more than the Justice
I disagree. XI. Justice represents "Equity, rightness, probity, executive power." Reversed, "Law in all departments, bigotry, bias, excessive severity." Whereas XX. The Last Judgment, is "Change of position, renewal, outcome." Reversed, "Weakness, pusillanimity, decision, sentence."

Maria is an "outcome," a "renewal" of Mary. The red pyramid things are representatives of "excessive severity" and "power."

Laura better suits VIII. Strength because she is a character of magnanimity and courage. XIX. The Sun is "material happiness and contentment." Robbie is; Laura isn't.

>they work better than Eileen and Henry.
Not when looking at the traits of the Tarot. You have to look at more than just the name of the card.

>Who was the red devil again?
James Stone.

The Translated Memories website has its own list, albeit it deals with all the elements within the game such as Love, key items, and visual concept to name a few.

I think Jimmy Stone was the Red Devil if I remember correctly, I could be wrong.

The way I see it, we'd have to study into the different symbols on each card in order to decide who goes where.

I'm assuming the minor arcana would also be decorated in the spirit of all things SH. Any ideas on how to go about that? I unfortunately lost my first tarot deck and only recently got another one. I want the classic, as well, though. I seem to understand its meanings better, for some reason, even though other decks appeal more to me visually.

The ending in which James leaves with Laura symbolizes his self-absolution and embracing of a happy future with her. I doubt that Laura embodies courage and magnanimity very well. If there had been a card for Innocence, then maybe... but there isn't.

I still say the Sun.

Leaving with Laura symbolizes a lot of courage! The courage to face reality instead of living in delusions, and magnanimity in taking on responsibility for her care. I'd say Thomas is right.

Perhaps, but Laura didn't embody that choice as herself or with her character (snotty, bratty bitch that she is)... that was entirely James'. A future of happiness, however...

BTW, any ideas where Cybil Bennett could fit in? Seems like a waste to leave her out...

You're saying Laura's not magnanimous despite leaving w/ the man who killed her best friend?

Huh.
