Thank you! I knew there was more stuff on Bizarre Guitars, but I couldn't quite place my finger on which tracks they were used on, so I didn't include them. I'll go through the disc and sort 'em out.

The starting beat from the song "Breeze - In Monocrome Night"
Awesome, I'll definitely have to check out that library. I have quite a lot of Zero G stuff, including the Altered States plugin. I'm fairly certain Yamaoka used some stuff from there, mostly for ambient background noise. But, that type of stuff is a bit more difficult to spot, unlike beats or certain synths.

And, yes. This is seriously addictive. I'm sure that eventually I will have collected every sound from every OST! ;)

Right, i'm gathering more samples as we speak, so i'll report back to base when i'm done :-D

I'm fairly certain he's used some from AMG sample libraries since he did use the "260db" one.

I added a post to a thread on the general forum about the original SH theme but it was probably not the correct place really:
Just something that I looked into and thought I'd share on this thread. I have always been facinated with the different sound (compared to the rest of the soundtrack) of the SH1 theme.

I realise that the sound was probably influenced by Portishead - specifically Sour Times (mentioned many times by others), but Sour Times' main sample (which the song is based around) is taken from a Lalo Schifrin song called 'The Danube Incident' which was part of the soundtrack for the Mission Impossible TV show.

Lalo Schifrin was famous for his Mission Impossible theme as well as soundtracks for Bullitt and the Dirty Harry movies.

The instrument used for the SH1 theme (or electronic version) is a Cimbalom which is a type of 'hammered dulcimer'.
Does anyone agree with my observations and have you found the sound in question ?

I definitely agree with you about this! He's stated that he's a fan of Portishead, so i wouldn't be surprised if he did use that instrument. I always thought he just used a mandolin, since i used a similar sample to create a song.
I found a cimbalon sample library, so I'll be sure to look it through and see (though i doubt it) if it had been used by Akira to create any of his songs. Even so, it's nice to have it anyway since it's hard to get and one big mofo :-D

^ I don't know why I didn't think of this before when you asked, but in regard to the Alone in the Town guitar sound...

Yamaoka uses Logic and its built-in EXS24 sampler for all his music. The EXS24 comes with quite a few guitar presets, one of which being the acoustic guitar used on Please Love Me... Once More (I never shared it here because it's a velocity sensitive multi-sampled preset and would have been kind of a pain in the ass). I'd be willing to bet the guitar from Alone in The Town is an EXS24 preset as well. I have Logic, so I'll go through and see if I can find it.

Guitar samples are pretty difficult to distinguish from one another, though. I have the Omnisphere VSTi plug-in from Spectrasonics and there are a few blues sounding Portishead-ish guitars on there that sound pretty similar (but obviously aren't, seeing as how Omnisphere was released after the SH2 OST).

About the Silent Hill theme, I think it was obviously inspired by Portishead's Sour Times. The instrumentation and everything is almost identical.. and well, there's also Portishead posters scattered about the town in SH1. As far as that particular instrument is concerned, I have no idea what it is, but I can tell you that, whatever it is, the actual instrument wasn't used on the Silent Hill recording. It was most likely a VST preset or a sample from some random library.

Yeah, i think you may be right on that one. One of the reasons why i think so is because it's played very fast and is almost impossible (for me at least :-D) to maintain it all the way through. Second, a cimbalom is bulky and big and is a bit hard to come by, so like you said, he probably used a VST or something similar.

I'm currently getting hold of the Moldova Cimbalom sample library which was made in 1990, so there's a possible chance that he may have used that. Even if he hasn't used it, i'll will still be using it to create a song combined with a Fender Telecaster to get that VERY Portisheadish sound since I'm currently working on the main theme to my fan film...

Yup, I found it in Logic. It's called "Beatnik Guitar" and it's a preset for the built-in Sculpture synth. The same guitar was used for those low, Twin Peaks theme-sounding notes that start at 0:55. :)

Excellent find! Would it be possible to extract it with CDextract or is it too multisampled?
I would like to use Logic Pro as well, but Apple isn't interested in making money for a windows version :?

PS. Is it possible that Akira composed the entire soundtrack of Silent Hill 1 with just Logic? I'm having a hard time finding old sample libraries that date back then.

Logic is nice, and I definitely use it for certain things, but these days I mostly use Ableton Live (with Reason rewired in). It's much more intuitive and hassle free, especially if you're working with loops.

Give me a little time and I'll make a Reason NN-XT patch for you. It'll just be a matter of mapping out all the samples in NN-XT. Shouldn't take too long. :)

Ah, thank you very much! I would've done it myself since i know how to convert them with CDextract, but the thing is i can't open mac files on windows.

Yeah, I don't expect he used an actual cimbalom - after all it's quite an obscure instrument. I guess he could have used a mandolin sound sped up - but the effect he was probably looking for was the fast hammered sound of a dulcimer like in Portishead/Lalo Schifrin.

I know people sometimes criticise him for 'copying' Portishead (funny considering it's a sample in their song) but I think it goes very nicely as a theme for the first game and really sets the scene.

I'll convert them to other formats as well (Cubase, Pro Tools etc.) so other people can use them as well!
Send a PM to me if you want it converted to a specific format, that's propably the best solution.

Hello guys! I'm starting to using this samples in my dark ambient project. So I have a question: anybody knows how Akira made this industrial harsh noises? Is any kind of samples of just synth? A user in Last.FM said to me that Akira made FM synthesis to make this harsh noises.

Hey Industrialism, glad to see you finally made it to the forums!

There are some of the industrial sounds from SH2 that are available in the "Bizarre Guitar" sample library from Spectrasonics. These have NOT been altered with and sound exactly the same as the ones found in the game.

Hope it helped.

EDIT: Think i found a new sample. It's called "GEISHA 59" from the Bizarre Guitar sample library. I'm pretty sure it was used to create one of the songs from SH4...

^ Yeah, I actually posted that sample in the "tracks identification" thread a while ago...

As far as the harsh industrial noise stuff goes, it's all samples. I honestly don't believe that Yamaoka actually created any of the sounds himself. There are countless sample libraries out there that are full of metallic hits, stings, and machinery. Heavyocity's Evolve plug-ins are great for that kind of stuff. Do some searching!

Oh! Thanks. I'm searching for this 2 samples library. A friend of mine recommended to me the Industrial Tones, a VST with industrial sounds. Maybe I will find this one too.

Hey, i thought i would just let you know that there are some more samples from "Bizarre Guitar". I found them some time ago, but i forgot to past them, so here they are. There are so many of them found on that particular library, which seems to be his main choice. I'll keep updating it.

1. "SLEEP CYCLE2" from "Bizzare Guitar"
Used to create that lovely starting ambient in "The day of Night". It should also be noted that the "Atmosphere 5" from the 260db was also used in that song.

2. "HEARTLAND2" from "Bizarre Guitar"
Used to create the song "Items" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD243BoYzZw. It starts at 2:40.

3. "084 Tribal 1" from "Zero-G: Cuckooland Unhinged"
Now this is interesting. I'm not entire sure if it was used, but i sounds like it was used in the Silent Hill 8 trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BS7xj78t4dk) starting at 3:07. It's a bit hard to distinguish it at times, but it's definitely been filtered. Even if turns out they're not the same, they still sound pretty similar and it's very useable (i'm using it to create a song now).

By the way, i just completed Shattered Memories a few days ago and the song "Different Persons" really seems to be my favourite from the game!
It would be nice to find that "bizzare" guitar sample that begins at 1:02 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsgXpVDSpPU) and also find that beat that starts at 0:20 (It's been used in Homecoming too in the police station).

Akira apears to love this library.
I heard some demos of Bizarre Guitars from the official site and I'm "picking up" this pack.
I seen too that Akira uses some packs of Zero G too.

^ He used Spectrasonics stuff more than anything else (mostly for his synth sounds). He has used some loops from Zero-G, but those are few and far between. I have around 30gb of Zero-G material, and I haven't run across much that he has used. I do have the beat from Breeze-In Monocrome Night (from Return of the Planet Breakz), I'll post it next time I update the .zip file. I'll also post the SLEEP CYCLE2 (The day of Night) sample.

I'm considering making one giant Refill of all the stuff I've run across, but I'm not sure how many people would be interested in it, being that It'd only be for Reason. I'd convert all the synth samples to NN-XT instruments and convert the drum loops to .REX files. I'd probably make some custom Silent Hill skins for the instruments as well. If anyone is interested (and you use Reason) let me know. If enough people want it, I'll make it.

I would be interested. A ReFill with Akira's Samples would be good, not just for me, and every musican/reximer who searches Akira samples. Great idea through.
