I checked out Canon 550D ... and its amazing ...
It comfused me for a secound cuz it looks like a photo camera only ...
Im totaly suprised how good it is ... through my limited knowleadge of video cameras.
I watched some online vids and quality is awesome, distance - nearnes ... collors ... no motion blur ...

It totally rocks!

Yeah, the video mode just a good as my Canon 7D which costs more than twice as much, but it wasn't available back then when i bought the 7D. However, i'm still glad that i got the 7D since it's alot better for stills and also has a magnesium-body which is weathersealed.

Just know this: There are limitations: there's no continous autofocusing for video so focusing will be a pain unless you get an external viewfinder (which is the most essential way to get focus) or an external HD monitor. Also, another problem that most HD-DLSR's have are moire and aliasing issues: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6eKV9nu2Ao (Be sure to watch this video in HD). This happens because the sensor in these cameras are primarily built for stills and as such they are downscaled when using video which causes this to happen. To make these things less apparent, you need to adjust the camera settings and turn sharpness all the way down, though the issue will still be there. They can be fixed with some anti-moire filters but some of them can soften the picture.

Sound quality is especially hampered by the auto-gain-control which means you have no control whatsoever of the sound levels which means noise will occur (mostly in the quiet recordings). This issue can be fixed by a firmware update since they already did it for the Canon 5D Mark II but they're lazy to do it for the 7D and 550D. Even the newly announced 60D has Manual-gain control which annoys me since it's a camera that's cheaper than mine. The best workaround for this is to get an external recorder (such as the Zoom H4n or the new and cheap H1 which has no XLR though). You need to make sure that the sound is synched with the video and that's where a simple handclap or a clapperboard comes in useful. Afterwards, you'll either have to sync them manually or you can use the plug-in known as "Pluraleyes" which does all the work for you.

That being said, i still recommend getting a HD-DSLR since the end result of the footage is absolutely worth it. Having to workaround these issues have also made me better at filming, so it's kinda like challenge which can be ultimately rewarding. That was my input!

Ohhhh ... the wallet is getting lighter.

Now that u mention the autofocusing i remember i watched a video on youtube ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khrtaGfI ... re=related
awesome quality and all but i did notice the focus kinda getting back and forth the objects ... but i tought the camera man was playing with the cam, kinda wanting that dremy effect...

The moire really is a video killer ... wouldnt of had noticed it on my own ... now it bugs my eyes !!!
By auto gain ... you mean like a "compresor" or something ... it decreases or decreases the volume while recording?
Or just increases the ower all volume if its quiet while filming?

I googled out Zoom H4n and it seems to be good for acoustic instrument recording too ... wich is very nice.

I understand thet obstacles makes u a more competent artist ... i and agree with that point.

All in all ... the only thing that wories me now is the focusing ... how "bad" is it ...
i youtubed some vids and it seems to have roughish action on focusing while in motion ... plus the lens is making a lot of noise while doing the focusing.Does the lens do that all the time cuz it would ruin the soud recording ... but i guess there for external soud recording devices are used .. ?

PS - i watched and it performes good as far as my amateur eye can see in night scenes, low light ... wich is a gold nugget ...
And heres another question .. i noticed while zooming in / out it kinda does brightnes correction but on a way that looks like "cliping"
... you know ... is that normal? I mean can it be shut off if u need to zoom in a scene ...

all in all its -extremly- admireable video cam ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wKtFsX9 ... re=related

Thanx for engaging with me in this conversation on vie cameras, im learning a lotttttt !!!!

When you see films in the cinema, then the focus is almost always done manually so unless you have to shoot something like an unpexpected live event or perhaps a wedding, then it is going to be hard. With a sensor that big, it can be harder to focus, so the best way around is to get a follow focus... So, if you don't have these things, then i wouldn't recommend for live events. You can however press the AF-ON button which will automatically focus but it's very slow and it's not continous. The focus is not bad, it's just that it does NOT have the continous autofocus that you find in most videos cameras now. I can live with it but if i have to shoot a live event, i would consider using another camera for the most parts where the autofocus is a must.

The moire can be huge problem but it really depends on what you're filming; patterned shirts, roofs and anything that has detail that is so small. Try to avoid filming these, but if you really have to, you can get some cheap filters. I've really only experienced it along with the aliasing when using 720p and that makes sense since the resolution is smaller. The truth is unless your camera can record anything higher than 1080p (3K or above), it will still be susceptible to this. It even happens on my dad's $2400 Sony HDV, but then again, the sensor size of that camera is puny compared to the 7D i use, which also matters. That camera you use is Standard Definition (720x576) and it would certainly have problems with moire. For me, it isn't a video killer but for cameras with these massive sensors it should be possible to reduce the amount of moire.

The Zoom H4n is indeed a good all-round recorder. I've always wanted one of these since it's possible to record 4-channel of 24-bit/96khz sound. Notice that 550D only has a mini-jack input which is not ideal since it can generate more noise than XLR which is the industry standard for recording sound (and much bigger in size too). You're right about the auto-gain control: it constantly raises and lowers the sound, but the worst part of it is that there's always noise in the quiet scenes which is very annoying. Don't count on the integrated mic too. It's very basic and if there's any wind or if you want to hear people talk properly, then it won't sound good, so an external mic like the Røde Videomic Mono is much better but the AGC will still hamper the sound. So the best workaround is to get something like the Zoom H4n or if you have less money, the H1 is also fantastic for the price (It doesn't have XLR but a mini-jack input so if you really need to use an external microphone of very high quality then get the H4n).

That clipping you're talking about, are you sure it's not just someone who's turning the dial to compensate for the exposure? It's not the smoothest since it is a stills camera. Still, if you're making a scripted film, then you shouldn't adjust the settings at the same time (it kinda breaks the fourth wall when the light brightens like that!).

Know that if you are getting this camera, you will have to do a lot of things manually; you can't rely on the automatic functions. They're really dependant of accesories, but you don't need everyone of them. It took me some time to learn how to use this camera and now it's not so hard anymore. You just need to train yourself for these kinds of cameras, but once you master and overcome this challenge, you can pat yourself on the back.

It's like a jungle out there and i'm still learning as i've only had mine for 11 months (before that, i had NEVER used manual controls even on a conventional video camera) so, if it's something you still want to try out, my advice to you now would be to read and watch some tutorials. I'm getting a bit tired of talking since all this technical information i have to type is startling me, so i'm just gonna leave you to it and wish you good luck ;-)

The comments about rendering time remind me that I share a hobby with Stu Maschwitz (author of DV Rebel's Guide) - watching the After Effects progress bar for hours. :D

Hey guys, long time no see :-)

Although i've begun on the film campus, i thought you should know that the project is still being worked. There are many good places where i can shoot the film whether it would be indoor or outdoor scenes, so the release date might be pushed to an earlier release. Furthermore, i've created some more tracks which i may add to youtube at some point. Heck, i might even update the current promo soundtrack and add them there.
I'm still working on the script, but i must admit that i'm having problems with getting the plot to work, so if anyone is interested in co-writing the script, then you're welcome to send me a PM.

Until then, good day!

I'm gonna do a revamp of the front page to make it more accesible.
Also, i would like to thank Mr. Domino for assisting with the script so far. You've done a grand job.

Hi folks, sorry i haven't update the page for a while.

Since i've completed my short mid-term film for the school, i can finally resume work on the film.
The script is well underway and hopefully some of the scenes can be shot at some point in spring.

EDIT:
I've uploaded an updated menu of the film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mydVbPZYMQ

When the film is made available, this video will serve as the main menu where there will be buttons
that can be clicked on to access the film and the bonus features.

I've finally resumed work on the film but still, at this moment it's very unlikely that it will be released this year since I'm in dire need of several crew members and actors.

Fortunately, i have no intentions of giving up on this project, so it will be finished at some point :-)

Need any help for the soundtrack or anything like that or are you just using the music from the games?
