Akira used virtual pianos in the game's soundtracks? I mean, even I can quite easily make a very realistic sounding piano track on FL Studio, and the game piano tracks give me that feeling.

I believe so. There's even a video on the Making of SH2 with him creating Lying Figure noises (I think, or some other monster) through a keyboard.

It's from Fungo's abandoned channel, but still:

A.Y. mostly used prerecorded material and samples to "compose" the SILENT HILL soundtracks. The music he did create was almost entirely digital, aside from the guitars and bass.

Yamaoka never used an actual piano on any the sound tracks. The piano on the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack, for example, is very obviously not real. There's an old virtual instrument/sampler called SampleTank that has a piano called "1920s Upright Piano" that is close to the one he used.

Well that's a bit of a disappointment. :P

It's understandable though, given the time and expense of setting up, miking, and properly recording an actual acoustic piano. It probably wouldn't be a big deal for a large production, with a group of engineers and the money to dump into the studio time, but I think Yamaoka was mostly on his own and probably under a ridiculous time crunch.

Did reFX Nexus exist back then? I mean cause, I use virtual pianos too, and mine sound almost indistinguishable from the real thing.

Nah, the original Nexus 1 came out mid-2006.

Back in the day, SampleTank was really popular, and I'd bet he used it for his piano during the SH2 days. For SH3, he used a much better, more realistic sounding sampled piano. I have no idea what he was using, but it sounded really great (especially for the time).
