A question about Silent Hill: Homecoming (SPOILER)

I have not as yet played the game but I would like to know which war is the main character returning from. I know that I could simply read the "Silent Hill Wiki" but I do not want to risk reading the crucial plot development or the endings by accident.

Considering that the game takes place in 2008, feel free to speculate on which war he could be coming back from.

Really? It was 2008 last time I checked the timeline. Ah well, Fall of 2007 is close enough. Same hypothetical war.
