The town created Maria to make James remember what he did. I like to think they took a nurse and gave it a "skin" of Mary.

Maria is the product of both James' & Mary's desire and design.

I think the fact that she dies like ...what 4 times thru the game(?) is a good clue she's just a manifestation.

Yeah.
Maria is what Mary wanted to be for James, and also what James wanted Mary to be.
Because of that, I think she's just a manifestation... and James based her appearence off of a dancer for Heaven's Night, if I'm right.
So because of that, she was a real person, but isn't during SH2.

Yeah, and the town brings her back each time. That's why she has no memory of "being killed"

Maria is real in a sense. Maria is the town's dark version of James wife, born from the dark power of Samael that has remained since SH1. Maria is just like any of the monster's in town, a demon, yet she takes over the unique role left by Lisa Garland in SH1 as being the only monster in complete human form, and with an ulterior motive. This motive is to be a companion for James to further his torment as "a bad man", which Ernest remarks. She is the physical embodiment of what James Sunderland would have wanted his wife to be, or perhaps, what he liked about her in his own fantasies. Maria is a creation of James, representing hope that his wife may still be alive in the town.

Samael doesn't exist.
Even though Harry Mason may have defeated the God from being reborn into its corporeal state which would have meant dominion over the world or "Paradise" as the cult's would call it, however, the mark of Samael that was spread around town has gained its own influence and power over the district of Silent Hill, while its brief resurrection has left its essence dwelling in the town. Needing to feed off of the sins, hatred and despair of human entities to gain strength, it beckons specific individuals to visit the town. As we see in SH1 and again in SH3, for the cult's 'God' to be reborn it needs to be done so by feeding and growing off of hatred, or with Alessa in SH1, nightmarish delusions and fear.

The Mark of Samael isn't that symbol's name. SH3 explains that quite clearly. It's real name is the Seal of Metatron, and I believe that it says in the text provided in SH3 that it has no power on it's own. I'll have to go back to my SH3 save to check it out, but as far as I know, Alessa wasn't using the Seal for anything but protection from Dahlia's pursuit and plans.

I'll say it again: Samael doesn't exist. The God in Silent Hill 1 is called just that: God. Nothing more.

What you mean is "Seal of Metraton" This magic square, with strong protective and dispelling properties. It will bring results regardless of whether the target is good or evil; its strength, therefore, places a very high burden on the caster. As it is also difficult to control, it is not usually used.

This is why it bears the name "Metraton," after the angel Metatron (or Metraton), also known as the "Agent of God."

I know that. And if you know that, then why are you calling it the Mark of Samael and suggesting that it was used for evil?
