Traffic lights

Post by Notch2242 »

Anyone else notice that the traffic light systems are still up and running around town? I haven't a clue why they are, any theories?.

Yeah, I was noticed it when I first played it, I was running from something that had just scared the hell out of me when I stopped and said "Hey...wasn't that just green? And now it says I can't cross the street....What the hell. That thing is gonna catch up, and what the hell were the those footsteps? They're gonna catch up too"....long story short, I crossed the street.

But anyways I think they represent that the town is under control, maybe not by humans, but to show that there is a presence watching you...making sure you dont j-walk.

Ohh and if a moderator sees this and its already been posted...SORRY haha. I says this cause Ive done that three times in a row hahaha. And I did search witht he keyword "Traffic".

It may be totally unintentional, but it seems to me that it could be a reference to both the early nineties TV show and movie Twin Peaks. The series placed an emphasis on electricty, and particularly traffic lights, as having some otherworldy influence. Twin Peaks was cited as a major inspiration of the Silent Hill series and rightfully so because they both share the same unique atmosphere in my opinion.

There's lots of electricity in the Silent Hill games.

I think it's just a simple way to highlight the sense of utter desolation they wanted to create, and more generally just a nice attention to detail.

The town of Silent Hill has a mind of its own, and jaywalking is one of its pet peeves.
Two wrongs don't make a right, but it sure as h*ll makes it even!

I can just picture a "humor" ending for Silent Hill Origins:
MAIN CHARACTER: Hmm...the light is red, but I see no traffic, and the town is deserted, so...
(The main character jaywalks and is promptly run over by a huge caravan of monster-driven cars.)
I'm the kind of kid that can't let anything go
But you wouldn't know a good thing if it came up
And slit your throat.

The reference to Twin P is clear and it's a nice tribute from series to another.

I noticed the lights first time playing the game, but I thought it this way:" wow, look at the detail of the city" and caried on, didn't realy troubled my mind with it.

I never noticed the street lights changing. I did though notice that the "walk" and "don't walk" signs were still working. I think it was a detail added just to make the city seem more alive. Plus a lot of things around the city still work.

Yeah, I always thought it was a Twin Peaks reference, myself. Just another one of those neat little nods to one of the things that inspired the games. I noticed it on my second play through. I love the attention to detail.
