Scarier WITH the radio. Those terrible noises and knowing something is there without knowing where it is really get me spooked!

For SH1 and 2, scarier with the radio.

Since then, the radio has kinda become irrelevant, since the musical/ambient cues make the presence of monsters more obvious than they used to. Honestly speaking, between SH2 and trying to hide in Shattered Memories (music was still in low-gear, not giving away the monsters' presence), I can't remember noticing the radio at all.

Poor Henry never got a radio or a flashlight. Imagine how easy forest world 2 would've been if he had the latter.

With it. I find the tension of "crap there is something over there what is it what is it can I kill it should I run WAIT WHICH DIRECTION IS IT IN?" scarier than "oogah boogah!!"

My only beef with the static is that it sounds like a crappy dinging sound in SH1. But they added realistic static for 2 and 3, which I think is pretty cool.

It's definitely scarier with the audio on for me, lol. Because you're hearing that static noise and have no idea where the creature is.

I want the radio back. Ever since SH4, we've never had a radio. (Wait, did Homecoming have one? I don't remember)

^Homecoming had a walkie-talkie (probably misspeled). Elle gave it to Alex.

You could hear static noise when the monsters were nearby, like the older radios.

Well, the radio is kindof a signature Silent Hill trait, so I feel I'd be watering the game down by playing without it. It's especially effective when the game plays tricks on you. For example, you're slowly wandering down a long, dilapidated hallway and suddenly you hear the sound of static. You keep pressing forward, expecting the monster to jump out in front of you...but then suddenly, BAM! You're attacked from behind.

Happened to me a few times in the hospital, kinda freaked me out a little.

The cell phone in SM works just like the radio in the other games, to really great effect, IMO.
