It's only Mary if you receive the Maria ending. Otherwise it's Maria.

Well, it's always Maria...since Mary is sort of dead and elsewhere.
The personality just changes depending, but it's still physically the Maria manifested form.

The character you encounter before fighting it is always Maria except in one of the endings, but I think in a strange sort of way it is both of them: James' beloved dead wife and his guilty ideal hypersexualized version of her.

I can see it with eyes closed
Shadows that look like blood
Dead as far as the mind goes
Fear that comes from my head
Lives in the mirror"

I dubbed the thing Marya a while ago; it was easier then remembering who it was when. It's sort of a mix of a lot of monsters you encounter throughout the game, the biggest one being the metal frame of the Underhanger.

It's not too hard to remember, really.

If you're going to get the Maria Ending because you've been all over Maria like a cheap hooker, you're going to fight Mary.

If not, you're fighting Maria.

Maria's not a hooker, she's a stripper. There's a difference.

Strippers need love too.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that a bed frame? (I can't be sure)

It certainly seems to implicate and symbolize that, so in a word: yes.
I'm not dead yet, dammit.

The In Water ending.

- Mary...?
- Wrong again. Mary’s dead. You killed her.
- Maria. Maria... I’m done with you.
- What do you mean? But I can be yours... I’ll be here for you forever. And I’ll never yell at you or make you feel bad. That’s what you wanted.
- Now I understand. The problem is... you’re not Mary.
- No James. I won’t let you! I’ll never let you have your Mary back!

Definitely not Mary.

James' beloved dead wife and his guilty ideal hypersexualized version of her.
Exactly. That's what Maria is- a manifestation of his guilt and lust. Mary is dead.. she isn't present at all throughout the game. It's James' dirty mind that got him trapped in this situation.. (well and the fact that he killed his wife, whom he loved dearly..)

And as far as that metal box thing being a bedframe, I don't know if I agree with that... Bedframes are more rectangular and flat, and there'd probably be legs to it. I always compared it to cages of the monsters that you fight when Laura locks you in the room in the hospital.

I realise, Drew. I more meant that if the player was 'whoring' themselves to Maria with extra attention (amongst the other conditions), then they will get the Maria Ending. I wasn't implying Maria herself was a prostitute.

I think it's Mary's idea of what is attractive to James just as much as James' personal ideas of sexuality.

-feels like a whore- Well damn, I didn't enjoy protecting her... it was annoying as hell, took me two tries to get that frickin' ending..

Haha, Maria is kind of a slut, though. You've got to admit. Birthed from a horny male mind.. tsk tsk.

Not entirely. Not really at all. Maria is the product of Mary's volition just as much as she is of James'.

James wasn't a perverted scheevy guy. You can't label a totally natural human emotion and desire as something negative, considering all the circumstances surrounding it are entirely understandable. (Now where did my Clemency thread go....)

Contradicts Team Silent, who have stated Maria is James' delusion. Mary is dead, gone, and nowhere near the town. Dead is Dead. You shouldn't tag theories as fact. You aren't the creator of the game.
