The Voice On The Trail

Post by Anonymous »

Ok, I'm sure this has been discussed before but not since the forum re-opened, & I'm replaying SH2 so it's salient.

On the trail from the observation deck to the graveyard you can hear something mumbling three indistinct syllables. Apart from scaring the crap out of you, does it serve a purpose or does it have any meaning?

I've heard two theories on this:

1) It's Pyramid Head & when Konami took out his presence from this part, they forgot to take out (or deliberately left in) his voice. This doesn't make a huge amount of sense, as he doesn't have a voice in any other part of the game.
2) Seeing as this trail is right next to Toluca Lake, it's the same creature you hear when you're walking down the long descending passage from the Historical Society to the prison. Which could also mean it's the invisible 'ritual' dude from the prison itself (I've always been unsure as to whether these two are one and the same). This seems more likely, as they sound similar & the prison is under Toluca Lake.

So, does anyone else have any other theories as to this thing's identity?

No it's not. The prison is right behind the Historical Society.

I don't recall any specific mumbling other than the footsteps.

This is one of those occurances in the SH series I chalk up to "RSS": Random Scary Shit with no special meaning.
"Oh yeah, I've been here before
I can see it with eyes closed
Shadows that look like blood
Dead as far as the mind goes
Fear that comes from my head
Lives in the mirror"

OK, fair dos.

Oh, it's there. This is the first time I've played it on my new telly, and before I thought it was just footsteps; but there's definately some sort of voice there. Not that I'm casting aspersions on anyone else's TV, but there it is.

By the way, does the voice you hear while descending to the Historical Society & the 'ritual' voice belong to the same creature?

Alright, I think you're on to something...
That's just it, though, it's something...
I have a bitchin' sound system for my computer, and yeah, I heard some kind of vocal tone, along with the footsteps.
It sounds similar to the prison creature, but not as jarring.

No way that it's an animal/animals.
Icewater's right. Something is there. Possibly just to creep you out, though.

It sounds like.. well, noise. Not a voice, just indistinct noise.

For some reason it always made me think of the Loch Ness monster--but since Silent Hill is not Scotland, I'll just say it's indistinct noise and leave it at that.
I'm not dead yet, dammit.

The good folks at Konami had thoughts about how the long, event less, passage between the overview and the town would put down the gameplay value, so they put in some noise to give the player an eerie feeling of being followed and watched.

I have to agree with B5 but I really don't remember hearing voices, only footsteps.
Can you imagine having to walk in that path and not having anything to scare you?

That's what happened to me the first time I played the game. It was on a less than impressive TV & I didn't hear anything. Never before has nothing been quite so unsettling.

^ Same for me. Ever since I got that bitchin' sound system for my PC, I'm hearing all kinds of stuff I normally wouldn't notice...

Just sounded like water gurgling up on the shores of the lake to me...
