That's because it's dark and you have a flashlight. if you extract the textures from the game you can see them better, as in that pic (also in the art of sh dvd or something i think, too).
I'm curious to know under what purpose the additional ladies serve as. The possibility remains that they are not by any means symbolic. In that case, I wonder why they would exist in the first place. Why are they there?
It seemed to me while I was playing the game that one of the characters painted on the wall was James. It might have just been the lady in the green dress. I couldn't see it that well.
It seems to me like the gold ring could represent Maria in the fact that she is prettier and more desirable (hence the outstreched hands). Where as Mary could be the lead ring, taking a tremendous amount of effort from James (the fridge). This may also be why Maria was disgusted by the lead ring.
I wasn't creeped out by it. after seeing the weird fetish nurses with their fucked up heads and all the blood and dirt and the lying figures/mannequins I would've been relieved to be strangled by a beautiful woman from a painting. I thought it was a beautiful art.
Nothing 'just happens' everything has something to do with the intial plot. The woman of the door has a direct corralation to silent Hill 3. When you pass over the bridge and you drop the lead pipe the same woman appears and if you tell the truth she will give you a gold pipe and steel pipe. resembling the rings. The woman is from a japanes fairytale, so the other women must be from other fairytales too.
