Mary, Maria, Laura, Pyramid Head, Pyramid Head, Eddie, Angela, Ernest Baldwin, and James.

Three of which are (at that point) dead, three of which are manifestations, three of which are fate yet to be determined.

Essentially, the nine save points could be contorted to mean anything.

i always thought it meant,

"you better fucking save now, since theres a kick ass boss battle next"

hence the nine, to give you the idea of saving. ha

The guide also says you can read the scratched out signs if you get all the endings--which isn't true in the wide-spread release of SH2.

The guide was written by a man who played the game who writes guides for a living, not the creator's themselves. Plus he was clearly being jocular.
I'm not dead yet, dammit.

OMIGOD R U SRIUS LOLZ0R5

I've always liked the idea of a cross between the window representation, (eyes being the windows of the soul, and really the game is an internal conflict within the souls of those who enter SH), and the bars, (as people are trapped within SH and punished for/redeemd of their sins (depending on whether you've heard Eckart's theory), and James in particular has commited a sin grievious enough to land him in jail, certainly).
You'll be missed. You were missed. I am missing you.

There are 24 save points in the entire game. Two also in Born From A Wish. That's just for anybody who wanted to know how many. ^_^

Before contributing to every thread, I suggest checking the dates of them--especially when you're not really contributing anything at all--because this one alone is nearly a year old.

I'm wondering about one thing, are we taking "nine" too literally? The more I give it a thought, the more this version of savepoints symbolizes the Self, for now there's one savepoints enclosing by 8 others. The form doesn't suggest number 9 through 9 singularities, but rather focusing the 1 in the middle.
And if you have read my reference to the Winnebago Twin Myth then you could notice the pattern. James now is facing two Pyramid Heads, both contributing to his total Self. The savepoints, therefore, suggest that now James will be facing himself, unlike the previous singular savepoints those symbolized that James hasn't realized what he had done yet. With full memory, the savepoint morphs into a form that signifies James' state of existence. By numerological mean, the savepoint does not leap from 1 to 9, but rather a fundamental 1 to 2 (1 is surrounded by 2nd layer: 2). For example, 3 would be the 9 savepoints enclosing by 16 (making it 24 total). By speculating on this pattern, it seems the format of savepoint would be increasing exponentially. This is going to make me sound nuts but... the exponential quality suggests the power structure of Silent Hill. The James in the beginning, attributing to the single savepoint, symbolizes the incomplete self. The James that regains memory, attributing to 9 savepoints, symbolizes the Self archetype, the wedding of conscious and subconscious. If there's a 24 savepoint, it would probably symbolize the Mother, God, or somekind of Super Being, for the enclosure (16 over 8 over 1) symbolizes control over the Self. The exponential quality suggests how the Super Being (i.e. the Gold/Nature of Silent Hill) has a superior presence over James. This presence is not entirely negative, since control can be considered guidance.

Long long time ago in this thread, Ulver09 showed us something along this line with his Gematria system:

It cross-fertilizes with my post.

I don't know. Amphreded has a really powerful theory on this.

There could be many reasons and symbolic meanings behind the nine symbols, but I read on the symbolic meaning of the number nine and it is said that in Chinese mythology, they have different representations of even and odd numbers; even = feminine; odd = masculine. So maybe the nine symbols represent James' masculinity.
PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER_SHOW PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER:
In fact, the next room contains a boss battle between the two Pyramid Heads, so I'm thinking that has something to do with the symbolic meaning of nine. If it is supposed to represent masculinity, then having two Pyramid Heads, as well as James himself, in the same room, then that would make sense.

I'm inclined to agree with Amphreded. I think it's bang on.

But it could also be an allusion to the states from Hell to Bodhisattva, which are termed "the nine worlds." The highest level, the tenth level, is Buddhahood. By entering that room James "attains" his own "Buddhahood", his enlightenment, the realisation of his crimes. So, it's not far fetched that the nine save points may be an allusion (and a perversion) of that, especially with the lads who did the job are Japanese.

All of the previous theories have been interesting and really fit things, but I'm willing to link up with Ian's theory.

That would have been cool! Or they could have changed the color although that might have made people over look it and not save,lol...Unless they made it so you couldn't pass without seeing the save screen there. But a big one would have been cool.
