I have Ørigins for the Playstation 2. Just a few moments ago I completed it for a 2nd time.

My impressions? I love this game! I know everyone bitches about how it isn't a Team Silent game, but it's well-made!
It goes hand-in-hand with SH1, but its connection to the first game isn't the focus.
It really revolves around Travis Grady.
My only complaint-It doesn't pack as many scares as other SH titles. But I can certainly say this is an amazing game, one that'll give you a memorable experience.
Don't pass it up!

Finally got around to playing (and finishing) it and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was incredible (possibly my favourite Silent Hill soundtrack) and it just captured the Silent Hill feeling so well.

It definitely doesn't deserve all the harsh criticism (especially from those painfully unfunny guys who did "The Real Silent Hill Experience").

Oh and you haven't played it till you've played it on the PSP in the dark with headphones on.

Well I just played and beat Origins for the first time about a week ago, and all I have to say is WOW. I adored this game despite a lot of the criticism it gets. I loved each of the levels, the exploration, monster and boss designs, soundtrack, atmosphere, pretty much everything. At first I was skeptical about the whole mirrors concept, but after playing it, it felt like a unique addition that actually worked. I guess the only criticisms I could give it would be the few inconsistencies between this and SH1 but those hardly distracted me from the enjoyment I got out of playing this game. As well, the odd camera angles and darkess even with the flashlight were kinda frustrating. And finally, not sure if this is a glitch or whatever, but I found the background music would often cut out abruptly or skip and repeat, but whatever, no biggie I suppose.

Overall though, a great addition to the series.

it's not the worst silent hill l've played, but it's not the best either. travis is a decent protagonist with a decent story to tell. l've never been a fan of temporary weapons (your weapons have health). although, rating it as a game for a hand held, l'd say a must have for the psp.

I'm kind of a cheap-ass right now, and had to resort to playing 0rigins with a PS2 emulator.
Too bad the emulator is making it really hard to enjoy the game, having a retardedly buggy flashlight (black clipping everywhere), but I did get it working properly for a short time.

My first impression is pretty confused. Being able to control the otherside in Alchemilla is kinda weird but works at some level. But not being able to finish off the creatures with most of the melee weapons is kinda frustrating.
The story itself might work very well, but I'm a bit disappointed about the shortage of actually new monster design (good example: Lying Creature = Smog = Straight-Jacket).

So far I'm not ready to say I was wrong about this game, but I wasn't necessarily right either. Research shall continue!

I find Travis' personal story far more interesting than the added backstory of Alessa and the cult. He's not the easiest character to relate to, being a little on the Henry-Townsend-Scale of Stoicism, but I suppose he has a reason to be quiet and reserved, especially when you take into account his tragic past.

I found the transition into the Otherowrld very refreshing. I got a little tired of seeing the characters faint and wake up in rustic hell. Being given a choice of whether to enter or not, and knowing thaty you physically have to make the decision, adds an element of fear to the gameplay. I didn't want to go in, but I had to.

The monsters were interesting, especially the remnants, which happen to be, in my opinion, one of the most terrifying enemies in the entire series. And the
[Reveal] Spoiler:
Helen Grady
boss was so disturbing I must have stared at the screen for ten minutes straight after defeating it.

The music never stood out to me much, but I've only played the game twice. Perhaps I need to go back and listen to it again before I can properly appreciate it. However, some of the vocal tracks still appeal to me, particularly Shot Down In Flames.

In terms of gameplay, I have to admit that I loved the fact that they used fixed camera angles. High angle shots and long shots always seemed to add to the creep factor and I'm so glad they didn't revert to the typical over-the-shoulder shot that's commonly used for third person shooters.

I only wish they'd been a bit more original with the story. And perhaps not made Travis a chainsmoker. That guy can not run far.

But on the whole I enjoyed it, and over the years I've come to appreciate it as part of the series a lot more than I originally did.

Just got me a PSP and naturally this game. I like it. It maintains the classic SH feel well enough to be a welcome addition to my all-new collection of the PSP games. I agree with some of the downsides of the game, but feel it's still worthy of the SH title.

Currently kicking myself for dorking around with a DS all this time when I could have been enjoying the relatively luscious graphics of the PSP.

Post subject:  My Closing Thoughts on 0rigins...

Although I consider myself fairly new to the series, I can tell right away that SH has a better storyline than RE. To what extent, I can't say. Being that 0rigins and 3 are the only ones I've played so far. Anyways, here I go with my overall thoughts on Sh:0.

GRAPHICS: 5/10 I'm sure they look good on the PSP, but they looked like shit on the PS2 when I played it. Functionality matters over looks in this department, I guess...

GAMEPLAY: 8/10 Sure the camera angles got a little wonky from time to time, but this is a Silent Hill game. And I've had plenty of practice in Resident Evil with fixed camera angles, so no big deal there. What I didn't like was the fact that you couldn't hold the camera behind Travis while running(just as you could in 3). Though I felt that some of the weapons should have lasted longer than they did. Espically the Katana!!! Cedar Grove would have been so much easier with one that actually lasted!

STORY: 6.5/10 Yup... For the most part, it was decently disturbing. The real letdown of the story was.. Well... TRAVIS GRADY. First off, his voice actor(Mikey O'Conner)sucked something awful at potraying him. And plus, his dialouge wasn't convincing in the least bit. Good lord, I thought Lisa was hitting on a brick wall during that one cutscene in the theater. He was completely emotionless compared to Heather, if you ask me. But... Heather... In some sense owes her existance to Travis, so that makes him "kinda cool" in my eyes... And I didn't really get the whole deal with the "Flarous" or whatever it was called. Was that really the cause of all the evil in the town? Or am I missing something else here...?!

MONSTERS: 9/10 The Nurses? A staple of the series. 'Nuff said. The rest of the monsters did get a couple of "What The Fuck?"s out of me. The enemy that creeped me out the most was the REMNANT. Fuck, I hated those things! I will say that they are one of only two enemies in my entire gaming life that made my hair stand on it's end.

OVERALL: 7/10 Crappy Graphics, Decent Storyline, Not-So-Decent Protagonist, Creepy Enemies, Same Old Silent Hill...

But the PSP only has about 1/4 the good games that the DS has.

That's being generous...

I was angry at myself for not having a psp to play this back in the day, but I'm glad it was ported to PS2. Then again, it's my least favorite. Maybe I was better off?
Either way, once it was ported to PS2, I had zero reason to get the handheld.

I may be a few years off but still. I did enjoy the game, but the most aggravating point I found was not being able to set the difficulty level.

Shameful as it is to say, I am rubbish at games. With previous titles this wasn't an issue as I could easy action with difficult riddle. So with this addition I found the riddles non taxing. And the action, well there was a lot of throwing down the controller and asking my boyfriend to clear some areas for me.

I would also add that, I didn't care about Travis. He seemed quite flat. The story just kinda happened around him. Erm yeah that is all,

I don't care if a game is made by a japanese studio or not. I like what the Silent team did, but I also like what other teams did. Actually, I like every SH games, including origins. But while I had a great time with it, I also think this one lacked a soul, unlike the others. It was well made, but it didn't haunt me like the other games.

^ I think the game was a little rushed and unfinished due to its rough development.
I love 0rigins, but I see many things in it that could've been better developed had Climax been given more time.

Considering how erratic 0rigins' development was, I'm amazed that they made such a quality product.

They are about even for me, though most of my DS games are either sequels or remakes. The PSP had some great games, but still not much more than DS for me. I have no more than 6 to 8 games for either, but SHO I would have to say is great for the PSP.

Post subject:  Re: The "I got it" & Impressions thread

Well.. A bit late, but I finally managed to pick it up for the PS2. Had to borrow my friends console, but all good. Here's my first impression of the game.

Ever since Team Silent left, Silent Hill hasn't been the same for me. The scare factor and depth of the original 3 games (Screw the 4th installment :P) is non-existent for me. Then again, I am pretty desensitized when it comes to survival horror games, so maybe it's just me.

The whole "SH 1 and 2 crossover" thing they were trying here kinda fell flat for me as well. They should have just focused the game on one aspect (either Travis backstory or Alessa and the cult) instead of trying to force both stories onto the player. I was expecting to learn more about the backstory of Silent Hill 1, but I don't really feel that I did. At the same time I could never really get into Travis' haunting past because it wasn't elaborated on enough throughout the game.. Lots of wasted potential here.

Chiming in with many others, I have to say the enemies were unforgiving. I got mauled so many times and was struggling to keep a steady flow of health drinks throughout large potions of the game. Thankfully towards the end, the game was a bit more generous with items. The boss battles on the other hand were ridiculously easy. When you can kill a boss in a matter of 10 seconds, I don't exactly know how to feel. The final boss I killed within 1½ minutes.

The puzzles in the game were "okay". Nothing too hard really. Except for the flauros at the end. That thing confused the hell out of me. No further comments here. Traditional Silent Hill-esque puzzles.

Last but not least, here are a few pet peeves of mine.
I found the combat system VERY sluggish at times. This is a problem when trying to place a well timed hit on an enemy to avoid being slashed or grappled.

The loading times I found to be a bit slow at some points. Maybe I was expecting too much from the PS2, but eh..

The fact that you couldn't turn off the noise filter until after completing the game first, annoyed the hell out of me. I really didn't like the way it looked at all. I felt the graphics were taken down a notch because of it. Why did it have to be a "special option" at all?

During the nightmarish part of Silent Hill, just before you get to the Antique shop, I encountered this strange bug. Whenever I would enter the item screen by pressing select, the game would freeze up and I had to restart the console. Maybe the consoles fault, but very annoying.

All in all, I give the game a 6.5 out of 10. Despite my negative review, I still found the game to be a decent experience overall. I took my time exploring and ended up with a 6h28m completion time. >.> Not the best!

^ I had that glitch too, definitely rather annoying at the time. The first time I played it the cutscene prior to that, with Alessa, didn't play either, which was confusing. Other than that I generally enjoyed the game. My initial response that it was somewhat frustrating, but as I progressed I ended up enjoying the gameplay a lot. The atmosphere and locations were great, my main complaint was that the story wasn't all that it could have been.

I just finished the game and gosh it was so great for a non silent-team game.
I really thought it has a SH3 vibe ! I really liked that game. I really enjoyed Travis and the game was so close to an original Silent Hill in my opinion. Really nice puzzles, really nice places and awesome story. (Even if I don't get at all the final boss). loved it. I only didn't played homecoming yet but Origins is my favorite non silent-team game in the SH saga.
