I think it's zetta lame. You shouldn't be able to control the switches to the Otherworld! It's supposed to creep up on you when you don't expect it with the frightening blare of an air strike alarm, throwing you into a bloody rust-covered hell which you escape from when the Otherworld wants you to escape from it. I pray they keep this mechanic out of Homecoming and other new games.
The big mirror in the theater was cool though.

It was control, but that control was controlled. It merely was a way for the developer to get more out of the psp... I think, it allowed them to use the mirror switch to add more of a puzzle aspect, which in turn forced more backtracking.... which lengthened the game a bit.
As far as it being a gimmick I'm not in that crowd atleast anymore... it was a thematic element. It helped reinforce a couple of things depending on your perspective on the events, and characters... Such as Travis's very fucked up relationship with mommy dearest, and it can also be seen as Alessa developing more of her "abilities" concerning the town. Mirrors have always been a staple of horror, now if all the future titles in the series shifted to this mechanic that would be lame... It allowed the makers a different avenue.
Silent Hill 4 (even though it initially wasn't supposed to be a SH game) used the holes between world's to great effect... It helped to induce the atmosphere of Claustrophobia that one might feel when not being able to exit the apartment per say. Don't allow yourself to be so put off by something new in different. That's how something you love stays fresh.... and remains strong in your mind.

I prefer the idea of not knowing when or how you will change into the world, being able to chose takes away from it, for me anyway. It's so much more scary, not knowing. Besides, if I were in that situation, I'd be kinda inclined to not go into those mirrors, knowing what's on the other side

In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.

See the only thing I dont like about the mirrors, is that I explore every room I can, so when I then go into the other realm, I have to explore them all again. besides that I think of it like what Numb Body said that when you leave the room that you changed the realm in, you dont know what awaits you.
Sweetness I was only joking when I said I'd like to smash every tooth in your head.
