The hint is to avoid moving after they've fallen to the ground. If you stand at the same point you will have no problems with the stomping.

I've found is a lot harder to stomp in the PS2 version...

And the sanatorium has more monsters... C'MON!! THE PSP SANATORIUM HAD ENOUGH MONSTERS!! In the PSP version I always use all my health drinks but I survive, I haven't passed the PS2 sanatorium yet!!! (I admit it, I'm lazy cause I already finished all the game in PSP)
