Or Richard wasn't abusive at all, and was simply neglectful because Travis reminded him of Helen.

y'know, I'm surprised that there's still debate on the twobacks meaning....they have a proflie for it on the official site with a description like "Travis has no time for relationships" and "built-up anxiety"....

But yeah, the main topic...as far as Travis' issues go, the developers weren't really that subtle as to the MAIN ones, that is, his mom going psycho and trying to kill him and his dad killing himself. If Travis was REALLY molested, I don't think these guys would go the subtle route with it....and even they did, I doubt it would just be one little hint and then never brought up or hinted at ever again.

my guess is;
when the flashback occured at the game room, his dad said something about wanting to talk (if i remember correctly) but young travis said it's okay, and he just wanted to play the pinball, this probably shows that Travis already knew, or probably seen Richard through a peep hole that Richard had been unfaithful to his wife.
but, since Travis was young then, he probably didn't want to intrude his father's privacy.

I think, if there had been sexual abuse, it would have been revealed more, much like the realisation James had about the end of his wife's life.

I noticed the word "sleazy" and I thought it was an odd word to use, but I have an explanation for it.

Richard was lonely, had no sexual outlet, and missed his wife, yes - but sleazy doesn't neceassarily mean he's been unfaithful. I think it comes from the way he thought of women, how he talked to them and came across to them. It's partly a result of his sexual frustration, but also a result of his resentment towards women, based on his relationship to Helen.

He's become misogynistic, bitter and inappropriate. He talks to women, thinks of women, in a sleazy way.

That's what it says to me. If he was cheating, there'd be more of a confession or a confrontation in the notes to Helen.

Hello everyone, looking at the various letters found around the motel and the cause of death photo i guess what Richard tried to say was that he was so devastaded by Helen's mental decay that he was emotionally falling apart and in such condition he couldn't be a good father to young Travis, so he couldn't look at him out of pure shame and guilt. I also think the event that triggered his impulse to give up an take his life was his last look at a unrecognizable Helen (it was as if some entity took over her body, as he wrote in one of the letters) after Travis sneaked in Cedar Groove.

For me this was the best section of the game, specially the scene upon entering room 500 with the talking hanged-up Richard and Travis's realization about what happened then. The guys at Climax could have done something similar at Helen's cell at the sanitarium, giving us a little look and a bit of words of the real Helen before throwing at us her monster form.

LOL!!! creepy picture!
I used to think that maybe Travis was abused in that way, but I don't see how his father could have touched him if he couldn't even stand to look at him. I think in this case 'sleazy' means something else entirely.
I think he was maybe physically abused a little bit.
