Why couldn't he look at his son? Not because it reminded him of Helen, but he feels guilty for using him for his lust? And I don't mean molesting him but rather, uh, more passive acts.I have slept
alone for the last two years. I've
become so bitter, so sleazy! I'm no
father to Travis. I can't even look
at him some days. What is it going
to take to bring you back?
Yours forever, Richard

Re: SPOILERS. Richard and Travis: What may have happened?
He couldn't look at his son because Richard was ashamed of how he's become some sleaze bag in trying to replace his wife. And he was neglecting his son. He was becoming a bad father and he was ashamed of it. There has never ever been even the slightest suggestion that Richard looked at his son is a sexual way. If that was the case I'm sure the games designers could have easily hinted towards it very clearly.Detective Cartland wrote:Why couldn't he look at his son? But they don't, so he didn't. And that's the story.

To Mockingbird: Oh, thanks. I thought that was the case, but I thought, for the sheer hope it was a mistake, but alas... no other script. Sleazy is the original word that was used... illused, but used.

Shakespeare did refer to sexual intercourse as "the beast with two backs" so yes, that specific creature has an... *ahem* specific meaning.
But I dount his father did "touch" him, as was said he couldn't bear to look at Travis sometimes he saw his late wife. Plus the game would have a lot of controversy if sexual child abuse was at work.

I agree with oddish on that one. The game would have a lot more about the molestation if it had occured, something like that can affect a person's pychology greatly, so it wouldn't just show up as a random note and a suggestive monster. And him walking in on his dad makes sense with the other evidence.

I thought about it. But Travis seems not really afraid of his dad. Like, if his father was abusing him in some way, I don't think he'd want to really approach him.Aamon wrote:Has anyone mentioned that maybe it wasn't sexual abuse, but physical?
Did Richard blame Travis for Helen's 'death'?

Especially in one of the last cut scenes when Travis asks his father for a quarter, and he hung himself.

Just throwing in my opinion...
I don't think that letter meant that Travis was being sexually abused by anyone, like someone already said, if this was happening the developers would have been more clear about it. It was probably just a poor word choice, and they forgot that us Silent Hill fans like to analyze little details.

Holy crap! Okay, I never read that much into his notes, but you bring up a great point! Just yesterday, a friend and I were discussing this and had come to the conclusion that Richard had definitely been abusing Travis, physically and mentally, but not sexually. However, your injection makes sense. We couldn't figure out why an abusive father would kill himself... if anything, he would take his anger out on Travis and kill him instead. But, if you're right, and the letter is about him raping his son, then he would kill himself over that because he felt horrible about it. Yet, he pines for his wife to return, like if Helen was around, he wouldn't have done it all to Travis...
Interesting... It makes sense. Poor Travis... >.<
