The Sanitarium

Post by serek »

I found the sanitarium to be the most tedious and least enjoyable of any Silent Hill stage. It is too large a stage to send you running back and forth all the time, it got to being terribly repetitive which in turn took most of the enjoyment out of it. It started alright, but by the time you enter the first Otherworld it becomes too much of a redundant trip gallivanting around across/through mirrors and up and down stairs. Some of the puzzles were alright, though, including the one will the small dolls and the pills.

All in all, however, I find myself dreading going to the Sanitarium, not because it frightens me, but because it is long, tedious, and not terribly exciting. What do all you fellow Origins players think of this stage?
Why do you complain of your fate when you could so easily change it?

I think it's alright. Better than the Hospital of course, which takes me about ten minutes to complete on average. I don't love it or hate it, I'm pretty neutral on it.

Agreed. Too big for fun. The length of the hallways and feeling like I'm going nowhere reminds me of Metroid for NES.

I think that the Sanitarium is one of the best SH levels I've seen. It's certainly my favorite of the ones in "Origins".

The Sanitarium is great.
I like how it's like the biggest part of the game, lol. And it really gave that Silent Hill feeling.
My favorite stage is still the Theater though.

Yeah not a fan of that level at all. I think it was so long because the hospital level was so short. It felt monotonous.

I didn't like the Sanitarium that much either... I still love the theater and the hotel though.

The apartment levels in Silent Hill 2 - that was tedious. The sanitarium has great atmosphere and is not too repetetive if you don't get lost. I also love how similar it is in layout to Waverly Hills.

I hate the Sanitarium.. I'm heavily thinking about re-playing the game to get the other endings, but when I think about this place... God...
But the Motel and Theatre were my favorites ;)

The sanitarium was so big and sprawling, they could have made the whole game take place there. There were whole wings that were permanantly off-limits... hide a few more keys around and stick in a few more weird bosses, and there you go.

Its been a while since I romped through 0rigins but the only thing I didn't like about the Sanitarium was this one hallway I remember having to go through SEVERAL times, that was just filled with Nurses. The monsters weren't the problem really it was having to go through that circular area and then a lonnnggg hallway over and over.

Agreed, The sanitarium sucked. I used a walkthrough after a while. Maybe I'm just retarded but I congratulate anyone who beat the Sanitarium without a walkthrough. It got far to ridiculous, and as for fun, I dont have fun in any of the SH games...lol. I play them because they freak me the F*** out! I play them for the thrill and this stage bout made me kill myself :D

I didn't mind it too much although it did have too much running around and up and down. It wasn't quite as creepy as the hospitals and sanitariums in the other games.

Well, I played it again (fuckin' fireman outfit... Tryed 3 times but nothin'..) and I don't find the Sanitarium annoying anymore, I'm almost leaving it with 1 hour of playing, the first time it took me like 2:30-3 hours to get out of this place, now that I changed my opinion I guess there isn't any other places that I dislike in the game. ;)

On a side note: In my opinion Origins was the most fun game to play while you were on the streets... Well, 2 was always too foggy and dark, while 3 you just move to Jack's Inn to Brookhaven, so you can't explore the city at all... but Origins is nice, if I could I would only wander around the city, this "snowish" fog feature is really cool, apart from SH1 I can't remember any SH game having snow...

I really like the Sanitarium. It creeps me out. It's one of my favorite locations in the game, right along with the Artaud Theatre.

Yeah, it sure took me a while to get through it. All those damn monsters and getting lost. So annoying. I thought it was cool looking and all, but it takes up too much time just figuring out where the hell to go next!

They should have put more torture equipment in the Otherworld version, though. Shock treatment devices, lobotomy equipment, and all of the other horrible things that used to be used to "treat" the insane. That would have made it creepy beyong belief. One thing that made the motel so creepy was its brutal-looking beds and showers that looked like they sprayed blood or acid. It looked like the reception center for new arrivals in hell.

I agree, more torture devices would have been creepier. I even dreaded going into certain rooms such as "Female Seclusion", but I wasn't that blown away by anything. I thought the first few rooms you investigate were well done for example the room connected to the lobby with the wheel chair in the middle (reminded me of session 9). I think they could have put a lot more thought into the basement. Male seclusion, where the doll puzzle was (if I remember correctly) impressed me.
