Only paragraph that got to the damn point. In Silent Hill 1, unreality had a cycle of sorts. In Origins, I think certain years allow the two worlds to sync i.e. the link between the mirror world and the real world becomes strongest. Helen is clearly supposed to be in the real world as she is being treated and diagnosed, yet she shows the strongest of symptoms of the mirror world taking over her, almost to the point of possessing her.
Significance of a certain year (spoilers)

I get that it's a mirror. I just don't get what the hell it's supposed to prove.

He didn't claim to prove anything, just pointing out his observation I assume.

I think it was just something along the same vein of an easter egg. I doubt it has a real effect on the Otherword, but was just something put there to make you giggle, "LULZ THIS GAME HAS MIRRORS AND 1961 IS LIKE A MIRROR!!"
Though if we ever hear again about the Otherworld having different cycles of strong and weak connections such as years, moon phases, etc, then it would be interesting indeed.

LULZ indeed. I wasn't sure if anyone caught the subtlety of it, so I thought I'd share.
Other years that share the same characteristic is 1691 and 1881. It depends on how seriously you want to consider this "mirror" nature of certain years, of course, but Lost Memories makes mention that settlers began coming into Silent Hill in the late 1600s. Also, around 1890, people in the town are reported to have "spirited away." Brookhaven was also expanded in the late 1800, according to the guidebook, but also an image of the hospital circa 1880 in Historical Society. It's probably no coincidence that the hospital is one place that turns "otherworld-ly."
I don't know if Climax intended this, but if they ever decide to expand on this idea, then they have a lot of material that they can land their hands on. We know the nature of the shift in the first game, but only through information from the developers. Climax didn't explain at all what made the mirror so special.

I had totally neglected that issue of the townspeople being spirited away. It would make sense for those sensitive to the other world's influence to rise in numbers and be deemed maniacal, causing an influx of patients to Brookhaven. Thus, Brookhaven would have to be expanded to accommodate the rising number of "nutcases" who claim they are seeing another world (little do the normal people know, this actually holds water in the Silent Hill universe).Burning Man wrote:LULZ indeed. If it was unintentional, it was a damn good coincidence. Great find, Burning Man. I wonder what other dates or situations could relate to a thinning of the barriers between the real world and the other world...

Re: Significance of a certain year (spoilers)
so how does it relate to the game?Burning Man wrote:1961. It's an upside-down year: meaning that 1961 is still '1961' if you read it upside down. Numbers such as 1691 or 6009 is also an upside-down number. However, 1961 is the closest year that is an upside-down year to modern day. The next one, which is 6009 comes 4000 years later.
