(update 23. 1.) SH: O complete field texts (spoilers)

Post by Akheon »

Inspired by the old "SH3 interactive monologues" topic, I listed all the stuff that Travis says during the game when you examine things. I did my best to catch them all. Hmm... SH4 next?

EDIT (5. 1. 2010): added weapon and supplies examination quotes to the file.

EDIT (23. 1. 2010): added rest of the item quotes to the file, improved layout, added 1 new Travis comment. BTW, SH4 listing has also been made. It has its own topic in the SH4 section.

There were some interesting texts I hadn't noticed before this romp. For example, Travis refers to nurse as 'she' and straightjacket by 'it.' Some other observations follow:
PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER_SHOW PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER:
- Travis is a visual thinker? He often speaks in visual terms when evaluating objects on the field. "doesn't look like", "I can't see anything on this shelf", etc.
- Travis has some sorta strange double standards when it comes to taking items. At asylum: "Someone left their doll. I'll leave it here in case they come looking for it." Why doesn't he apply the same logic to all the other everyday items he pilfers without a second thought?
- I was delighted at the asylum basement. There's a huge amount of different messages for the various fuse boxes! The writers must've had a field day.
- Travis is being guided through the whole game. At first he doesn't specify this feeling or his own motivations much. He just thinks he "should" go to some certain place or check out some key locations. Later on he explicitly wonders a few times why is he "led" around.

Very cool. :)

"An unloved fuse box."
Poor fuse box, not getting any love.
Seriously, thanks for writing this. It's really interesting.

Wow man, some of those things I noticed but other's I really didn't. I bet it took a damn long time for this to be "documented" (?) Thanks.

It didn't feel like a long time when I documented them, at least...

I've updated the file in the first post with Weapon and Supplies 'examine' messages. Some more observations:
PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER_SHOW PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER:
- Travis says he is surprised of the IV stand's heft. To me it suggests that he has never had to carry one around before, physically sick (or otherwise.)
- The shovel has a peculiar comment: "Short-handled shovel, good for maiming bodies and then for burying them." Is this Travis' attempt at cracking a joke, or a heavy-handed attempt by the developers to allude the whole insane murderer thing going on with him?
- Another thing is how he sometimes judges the weapons by their potential killing capacity a bit too eagerly. "cruel-looking", "lethally sharp and ideal for piercing flesh.", "this is a powerful tool for cutting through meat and bone." But then again, there are many comments that give off a practical self-defense intention as well, like "might come in handy for keeping things at a distance."
- Travis seems to know his guns too.
