do you think they'll be more to it?

The icy otherworld sounds interesting and may be a fresh look for Silent Hill. Although I think it should be a seperate plane and not the replacement for the nightmare world.

I always thought winter looks beautiful w/all the snow. White is angelic, clean, heaven-like (regardless of how devastating it can be). Black signifies death to me. White, psychologically, does not make me think evil or hell or anything negative, or not as much as black does. So I don't think the whiteness would work for me.

I'd say that the snow/ice theme is an interesting take on things. I'm sure they'll include a nifty breath effect with it, right? And on top of that, I don't know how many of you have ever been snowbound- i.e. stuck in the middle of nowhere in the midst of major snowdrifts- but it's an eerie feeling, especially at night when it's dark and reaching extreme low temperatures.
There's a definite isolation in the icy, snowy desolation, as much as you'd find in Death Valley. Check out Kubrick's The Shining or Carpenter's The Thing if you don't think it's threatening (actually, check those two out even if you already like the idea )

Well if it gives you information that the original didn't surely it's better to have something rather than nothing. Even if the rest of the game is non-canon the extra details they add could possibly be seen as canon.nobody wrote:what's the value of details from a game that's in its own universe?

I heard that in some cultures white means death, also the bible and other religions says that Hell isn't a hot place like everyone thinks. It's cold, just like the Hades.
On topic - I really liked the idea of this Icy Otherworld, Climax rules! They did damn well in Origins so I hope that this game will be the equal as Origins, or better... Can't wait to play it

Considering climax picked up origins mid-development and crafted a decent silent hill experience from what I thought was a rather piss poor looking game prior (remember the videos of him shooting RE lookin' monsters with a laser sighted gun? ugh), I'm confident in their ability to craft a decent stand alone title. Therefore I am all for them changing the otherworld, among other things. I hate snow/ice in real life, should translate well into creating an uncomfortable experience for me.

Well, the thing is that the style of the Otherworld completely depends on the person with the influence on the town in each game.
Therefore it was rust and decay in Silent Hill 1, 3 and Origins, as the look of the Otherworld is influenced by Alessa's pain and terror/Claudia's messed up mind thinking that Alessa's Otherworld is the Paradise.
In Silent Hill 2 we got to see three different worlds. For James it was abandoned, lonely, empty, caused by his feelings after Mary got sick.
Then we have the flames for Angela, since she was going through hell because of her father, and for Eddie there were mocking people everywhere.
Silent Hill 4 showed bizarre, exaggerated looking versions of the places Walter was afraid of when he was little.
So having an icy world makes perfect sense, if it has somehow to do with the story. Being it the lead character having some connection with ice or whoever the person who influences the town is.
It would actually be interesting, seeing the otherworld frozen, icy, white, cold looking.
I just don't want it in Silent Hill 1, because it doesn't belong there.
EDIT: Although there still should be SOME sort of fog. After all it is stated that there's almost always fog in Silent Hill, rolling into the town from Toluca Lake. The fog doesn't seem to be part of the Otherworld, but part of SILENT HILL. In the Otherworld we often see the fog thickened, it's just a natural thing being influenced by the Otherworld, just like everything else in the town usually is still there, but changed.

You say that as though you've already played the game and come to a solid conclusion that it's rubbish. I personally think that being negative about anything that is new before it is released is a waste of time and can sometimes lead to you looking stupid because for all we know, it could end up being the best in the series, even if it is non-canon.EileenGalvin wrote:Read my other post. They should have made something new instead of screwing up something that was already good. That's just my opinion.

I think by "screwing up" she just means "changing." It's a valid concern that something you know and love is going to be altered and not be as good as the original. I'm a bit worried myself but they have the benefit of the doubt for now. They could have easily used new characters judging by how far they're straying from the original and how many unique ideas they're bringing to the series. They didn't need to pick apart the first game for pieces to make Shattered Memories.
On the other hand I think it's neat that they are, in essence, starting over. You can tell me that the games don't follow the same story but there is a kind of timeline that's generally accepted. To go back to the feeling of the first one, the "What's going on here?" atmosphere could be a nice change, instead of Silent Hill being built up and the player knowing it's the town that is influencing things. We're back down to square one and that could be very freeing because they don't have to adhere to any established rules.
But the bottom line is that they could have done that with original characters. It'd be hard to do without just repackaging alot from the first game, but at least then it would be an homage more than a remake.

Yeah, as controversial as it is, I really don't see them doing it any other way. How else do you introduce new players to where it all started, while very firmly disconnecting this game from series canon, and screw with the established fanbase in a way that won't have them pointing to MMY's timeline and howling that it doesn't fit?
I'm pretty sure the fog will be present. After all, the environment is streaming and I'm pretty sure the Wii won't be loading the entire town all in one go, so the fog may even serve a functional purpose.
