Voice Actors
I don't know how many people will agree with my opinion on this cause I know there are a lot out there who didn't really like some (if not all) of the voice work in the original, but I'm hoping that they'll bring back all the originals from the first. If the characters don't sound like Cybil or Harry did in the first it will be a bit of a put off for me. (Not that it will kill the game by any means)
So what do you all think? Should they get new voice actors or try and rehire the old ones?
The pauses in dialogue were interesting to me it made everyone sound as though they were on drugs or that they were in a state of shock or something. Like it was surreal. Cybil "Wait....(5 second pause)...Where are you going?"

I'm hoping for an all new cast! Since this is going to be a very vocal game, I can't wait to hear Harry's new voice. Most of SH1 was literally painful for me to listen to. Though I wouldn't mind hearing the "radio" line redone. haha

ALL the originals? I dunno... I'd be happy to get anyone but the originals, really. It's been over ten years and you don't know if those voice actors are still doing VA or if they're even interested. I think they should hire "outside the box" so to speak. Take a look at Alex's VA from Homecoming: he's a soap opera actor who does extensive VA work (actually is it just me or do most of the good video game voice actors come from either soap operas or theater [as exhibited in Final Fantasy XII]?), and he did a great job at. You know. Acting with his voice lol. I don't think any of the originals did that with the exception of Lisa's VA.
And those pauses were because the audio files were split for some reason? You can actually hear the forced pause in the recording, IMO, if you listen to the dialog.
Besides, they already have VA for half the cast--Dahlia, Lisa, Kaufmann.. they made Origins so they're probably going to bring those people back. Why would they go through the trouble of getting anyone from the original game when they already have those three people on figurative speed dial?

All too true. Harry's voice acting was almost as bad as Barry from the original Resident Evil. I hope they don't give Lisa a slight Southern accent again like they did in Origins.

I want Michael G back as Harry, provided he's improved on his voice acting over the years. I'm sure he has, too. Perhaps the others can also do the voice acting again, but I doubt Climax even wants them to return.
What I really hope they keep is a reference to the popular "Huh? Radio?..." line from the original game. It would be stupid if they didn't.

Laura Bailey, Yuri Lowenthal, Michelle Ruff, Amanda Winn-Lee, Wendee Lee, Karen Strassman, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn. Some or all of these should be in it. And maybe Dave Wittenberg and Crispin Freeman.
Yes, the old voices should be replaced. VA wasn't nearly as good in 1999.

I could see Paul Eiding voicing Kaufman. But his current VA isn't half bad, so I wouldn't complain if he comes back. Like Krist said, it would be great if more TV stars start doing more voice acting.

Ah, that was something of a technical limitation with the sound files back then. The recording itself never was supposed to sound like that. When the developers chopped up the sound bits into multiple files and merged them into one blob, the PlayStation console could only do so much to read and play the sound bits. lseek and all that.4&20DeadBirds wrote:The pauses in dialogue were interesting to me it made everyone sound as though they were on drugs or that they were in a state of shock or something. That's not exactly going to be a problem now whether you use old or new voice actors.

I think the pauses were one of the things I liked most about Silent Hill 1. It gave the entire thing a surreal feel.
The series has kept slow-paced dialogue since SH1, I think. It's always had this detached, surreal feel to its dialogue scenes.
I really liked Dahlia's voice actress from SH1. The entire Balakan Church sequence with Dahlia is one of my personal favourite scenes of all time.

The VOs will be the final vote for me I think.
If the get most (mostly just Michael G if no one else. My Harry is only Harry if he looks and sounds like the original ) if not all the originals, I will break my back working and I will buy a new system and get the game and play it all in one day.
If they don't get the original VA's (if they don't get Michael G) , I will not buy a Wii and probably won't ever buy the game.
It is my one petty fangirl thing and I am sticking to it.

Re: Voice Actors
The original voice actors shouldn't even be allowed to play the remake, much less contribute to its creation.

A big role?
I'm sorry, but when I think of everything that makes the Silent Hill series unique and fascinating, when I think of how this game inspires heated discussion and debate ten years after its release, I don't think of the voice acting.
When I think about the area in which the first game failed miserably, when I think about what aspect of the game requires the most drastic improvement, I think about Silent Hill 1's voice acting.

Yeah, and that justifies bad-mouthing the voice actors from the original Silent Hill.
"Important role" would have been more appropriate than big role, sorry.
One of the game's most memorable lines about the radio was said by Harry's voice actor, Michael G. Surely that's something memorable about the first game you think about. You're not giving the voice actors any credit at all by saying they shouldn't even be allowed to play the remake.

I have to admit that the occasionally "off" voice acting in the original gave it this weird low budget horror movie quality and added to the weird dreamlike quality. It's like one of those cheap horror flicks from the 80's that would end up creeping you out despite the fact that the actors were probably just friends of the director.
That said, if they have the budget they should go all out. I say hire Kyle McLachlan to voice Harry. "I'm looking for my daughter...and a damn fine cup of coffee."
