Off topic: I just LOVE how often the word 'canon' is being bandied around these days. It's used every other fucking post these days, yet six months ago not a single person had used it. Heh.

(Don't believe me? Do a search - PrescitedEntity cited the word for the first time late last year. We haven't done a database dump for a little while so it's legitimately it's first use!)

^ Well, I believe I never used that word, so it's not everyone who uses it ;)

Well, it just rolls off the tongue. . . Say it with me, Vixx. You know you want to. :)

Jokes aside, though, if Tomm says that this is another universe and should understand it like the movie or the comics, then there's no point in worrying whether this is going be part of regular universe or not. I know some people still have concerns on this NOT being part of the regular universe, but they'll just have to either play it for themselves and decide, or not play it altogether.

You managed to say all that without using the C word. Nice job, BM. ;)

btw, my post wasn't aimed at you - sorry if I gave that impression! It's just a general observation of mine. :)

I mentioned before that Climax really nailed the "feel" of SH in 0rigins so that, along with the ever-increasing optimism I get when reading their interviews, SH:SM should be, if anything, worth playing through and enjoying regardless of how "true" it stays to the series. They really seem to understand a lot of the concerns many hardcore fans worry about and attempt to resolve them one way or another (like the PH thing which, to me, is great!)

Since you mentioned it Vixx I did a search on that word and found PrescitedEntity's initial post that used the beloved C word and it was funny as hell seeing how many others used the world directly after him/her!

I'm ashamed at myself that Ive started using that stupid word.
Vixx is right - it's used way too much these days

Back on topic - I didn't even know SH had changed hands when I played Origins... It felt so much like the Silent Hill game that it was.

What a great article! Thanks for sharing Vixx, I'm going to show it to fans who've already drank the hateraid! But seriously I'm glad they aren't going to shoehorn pyramid head in!

great to hear that, and good to see that they are reading our posts. But lately I've come to a conclusion even above all that, still it won't change a fact that they are creating non canonic game, so what's the diffrence whether PH will be there or not, right?

Well, if Climax takes over the Silent Hill mantle, they may use SHSM to effectively reboot the canon. So it's possible that instead of having a non-canon game, we'll simply have a new canon, making SHSM something akin to the 2003 BSG miniseries, canonically speaking.

Half-joking aside, though I'm not sure how strongly I share their sentiments towards PH, being tossed up between having SH be a completely personal experience versus having more Order-related/historical constants than just Valtiel and the business with God, I like that they seem to be paying attention to the (well-reasoned) logic of the fanbase.

Going off-topic again, I like how this thing about the word "canon" surfaces on the exact day I come back from a hiatus from this board. Seems it's a bit of an annoying fad, as the word is far too easily abused, haha. However, I don't think I started it, did I?

Offtopic addendum: I was one of first who was invalidating SHH canonicity and I believe it was shortly after game came out so it was more than six months ago so search engine must be failing again :)

why would they do that? are you suggesting they can't handle the main canon so they have to escape from it's lethal claws and create new one where they could 'create' peacefully?

Krysta, your posts were in those very threads, so that just means something of a fadstorm happened around that time. I'm not sure that anyone can pinpoint who actually started it, though, unless Vixx's searching prowess exceeds ours, haha. The word's use on the board obviously didn't begin with that time, but it seems to have exploded in usage around then.

And yeah, actually, I mentioned that as a possible motive behind the remake a bit ago. The backstory and such have grown quite bulky, and considering they're not the ones with the original plans, it'd probably be a massive headache for them to plan plots and such on top of having to make everything correspond with the preexisting mythos. I'm fine with it either way, really.

Yeah, I've been using the word "canon" since shortly Silent Hill: Origins was released—of course questioning its own. In fact, Burning Man created a thread titled "Canon or no?" on January 12th, 2007.

Anyway.

after I've noticed massive negative reactions to my post I decided to step back from the discussions as people were clearly still mesmerized by this game, and were in no state for a decent diescussion. Look how things changed lately 8)

The Wikipedia article on "canon" is actually really interesting, and I'd recommend everyone give it a quick read. It talks a lot about the nature of canon in fictional universes, and discusses different opinions and viewpoints on how to ascertain whether something gets to be canon or not.

Here's a quote which I think is particularly relevant to canon as it pertains to Silent Hill:

"Additionally, works of foreign origins (as is the case with most Japanese-produced video games, manga or anime) may have certain details of the original plot changed or modified during the adaptation from one language to another. The person in charge of the adaptation may choose to write an adaptation canon in addition to the original canon to maintain consistency when adapting a possible later work such as a sequel or a spinoff, although this is not always the case. An adapted version of the same work can sometime deviate completely from its source material, resulting a separate franchise from the original, as is the case with the Macross and Robotech franchises."

They keep saying the right things in their interviews. They're constantly giving off the impression that they have a solid idea of how Silent Hill works at its core level.

But I'm still afraid to put as much faith into this game as I'd want to. I don't want to have my expectations dropped off from the top of a skyscraper.

They never clearly said ph wasn't going to be in it. They said there would have to be a damn good reason. I mean they did create the butcher

Well, if they put him in with a DAMN GOOD REASON, I doubt any rational fan would complain.

Of course a development team is going to say, "Well, we put [it] in for a good reason, promise." No one is going to say, "Yeah, we, uh, just threw [it] in there as fan-service." This is exactly what Double Helix did w/ Silent Hill: Homecoming: An inexplicable use of the r.p.t. w/ a thinly disguised "reason."

I put my faith in the dude.
Hulett sounds like he could make a real winner of a politician; maybe he should change professions. I'm not sure if I'm going to let the fact that he's telling me everything I want to hear lead me to think the game will be perfect. Yes, he told us SH:SM will not be featuring Pyramid Head (Can I hear a "what, what?"), but I'm don't know if I'd let him smooth over all my concerns.
Hulett wrote:
"This is not a gameplay spinoff, it is a real Silent Hill title."
Does he really know what he's promising to us?

Don't get me wrong, I'm seriously looking forward to this game. I'm just being cautious.

Looks like he's trying to build hype. Which could backfire once the game comes out and those that have hyped it to death actually play it, and then proceed to go all out with the complaints, GameFAQs-style.
