I actually think this will be the most useful box cover they have done. They managed to put something horrible but still fairly Walmart-safe on the box.
Prior games have not done that. There are no devil children on SH1's box, no Pyramid Head or Nurses on SH2's. They could have gotten away with those if they were fairly smothered in abstract art, and that tends to be what other SH products do. But the more you abstract it, the less it works as an eye-catcher on a wall of games.
For most of us it doesn't matter of course, we'd be sold if the cover was matte black or a glowing blue ice door with an arrow. I'm just hoping this SH will be more successful outside the usual fanbase.

I don't like it at all. It looks like every OMGIt'sacreepylittlegirlRun!! cover to every bad horror movie with a badly acted wannabe scary child ever made. Silent Hill is about subltety, not in-your-face overused cliches. A picture of an icey, dark town with the hint of human-like figures far in the background would have worked much better, or even an abandoned car in the snow. This kind of scare is what other, lesser horror games are about- not Silent Hill.
Untrue. Silent Hill has always been packed to the gills with cliches and in-your-face grotesque-ness.JRamirez35 wrote:Silent Hill is about subltety, not in-your-face overused cliches.
Unless you think eating a foetus is subtle.

I doubt they would ever put cover art of a woman eating a foetus on the front of a box though.Droo wrote:Untrue. Silent Hill has always been packed to the gills with cliches and in-your-face grotesque-ness.JRamirez35 wrote:Silent Hill is about subltety, not in-your-face overused cliches.

Eating a foetus is definitely not an over-used, in-your-face cliche.Droo wrote:Untrue. Silent Hill has always been packed to the gills with cliches and in-your-face grotesque-ness.JRamirez35 wrote:Silent Hill is about subltety, not in-your-face overused cliches.

Has anyone seen front cover of Silent Hill 4: The Room OST?
There is definite devouring of small humanoids - probably newborn or even foetus. I cannot clearly make it out and thus it is very much J-Horror'ish, thus it rocks.
Now THIS is front cover.
Horror: check;
Surrealistic: check;
Silent Hill'ish: probably, but check anyway (those rotating rings);
Features of traditional J-Art: check;
Mysterious, yet revealing: check;
Artsy: check.

It's still ugly, and I still don't like it, and as someone who takes pride in studying design, I find it pretty shocking that this could be considered, even as a mock up. I may be young (as you are), but I'm well aware of what's aesthetically pleasing depending on context, and no, this does not seem fit for the context of a 'scary' game; particularly with the standards that we've come to expect now.Aavri wrote:So don't complain about the US boxcover since the Pal region is going to get another cover and you don't need to look at this cover other then in this topic.
Try not to get your panties in a twist love.
EDIT: Disfigurator, that image is fantastic. It's both macabre and obscure; something that the series has been known for. And I don't care if they're taking a new direction, there's staple things that shouldn't be broken, this is one of them.
I personally never liked it since it looked more like the game is set in Japan like the Fatal Frame series and I don't think it portrays the American look and feel of the Silent Hill settings. I agree it's creepy to look at but I just don't think it portrays The Room is very well... though I have a feeling I'm in the minority! I do like the Japanese The Room boxart:Disfigurator wrote:Has anyone seen front cover of Silent Hill 4: The Room OST?

No, but evil little girls, ghosts, demon insects, pterosaurs, gorilla monsters, fog, sirens, wheelchairs, blood and rust all are.Ratiocinator wrote:Eating a foetus is definitely not an over-used, in-your-face cliche.Droo wrote:Untrue. The foetus eating was an example of SH being less than subtle.

Thought the boxcover needs to be an eyecatcher, not totally aesthetically pleasing at times. At times, you need to make a business move and make you stand out from the rest. I mean look at the JP covers for SH1 and 2. It's a wall. What is pleasing about a wall with some blood on it? Well, SH2 is a blood/rusted window but the window is in a wall.
This is the first game I've ever seen that has a dead child on the cover. I know I've seen a few movies with a dead child on it, but not any games that I remember(and if it is, it is an first for the gaming biz). Not like there is a dead child in the backround or something, I mean the child is right up there were you can clearly tell. Out of all the Wii box cases, this will stand out. This sover will make people go wtf and maybe even play the game to see what happens. I know if I am looking at a wall of games, I will look at some games that I never even heard of(and buy them) of the cover can stand out.
THIS is awesome cover art:

I'm kinda surprised about the negative response, actually. I think that in comparison to other cover art we've seen for the series, this comes out second only to the PAL SH2.
You have to remember; we already know about SH. We're already going to buy it (besides asshats who d/l illegally - seriously, what a douche). This has to appeal to people who may never have heard of the series before - it has to stand out within a sea of Wii titles that, on the whole, are brightly coloured and kinda garish. As it stands, I think the blue motif is really effective - it would really make the game stand out on a shelf.
And am I the only one who doesn't care that C's hanging in mid-air? Am I the only one who thinks that just makes it creepier ... ? (and yes, that's rhetorical - don't flame me, guys. )

^C's hanging in mid-air because they simply used a stock image photo of her that was released before. The artist couldn't be arsed to extend the cropped swing chains after rendering all that frost on top of the image.
Anyone else here as bothered as me about how anime-esquely LARGE her eyes are compared to the other human characters in the game? It's almost as incongruous as Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny together w/in the universe of Space Jam

I'm not being negative, I like the cover although they just reused the Cheryl image and applied the forsty effect... Would be cool to have a real new art of CherylVixx wrote:

I do agree with you though. The image is quite silly.

I know a few people who like the anime eyes. Mostly because they're just Wapanese retards that anything that is even slightly inspired by an anime will become their immediate new thing for about a week, then they'll forget all about it.
I, however, don't like the idea of everything having big eyes and every character having the power of shedding sixty-billion gallons of blood before dying.
Anyway, I'm so-so on this. I'd really prefer something more...artsy, As opposed to just some already released stock art being frosted over.

Isn't it? I mean, they put a lot of effort into remodelling Harry to "give him a more realistic" spin but then they give Cheryl the Totally Spies treatment.neonblack wrote:Hey, man, don't bring Space Jam into this.
