Impossible, SH fans are the most intelligent and gifted gamers on Earth. I love Gamefaqs forum.
I voted no. Shattered Memories is a good addition to the series solely because it is the first game since 4 that did not overtly derive from previous entries(thematically), or the movie. Over the cult not being mentioned, I am very happy that no aspect of the town's nature was revealed in the game. Save it for the last game in the series.

He sort of has a point, though, Vixx. There is such a HUGE contrast between GameFAQs forums and this forum that it almost feels like you're in a different world altogether.Vixx wrote:

Personally I think some Silent Hill fans are sanctimonious, repetitive, stubborn and utterly up their own ass. Particularly when they use sweeping stereotypes.
And it's not just Silent Hill; check out pretty much any Final Fantasy board. After reading through some of the threads on the FF XIII board (PS3 version) I am firmly convinced that there is no game company on this planet that is more unfairly (and I really emphasize the world "unfairly" here) maligned than Square-Enix.
Of course, a big part of that is that GameFAQs doesn't really seem to have moderators.

I'm glad someone else feels the same way - that whole plot basis is no longer edgy nor provocative. It should have ended after SH3.Droo wrote:PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER_SHOW PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER:The further Silent Hill gets away from the cult the better it will be for it.
I would have liked RE5 a lot more if I didn't spend the entire game getting shot in the back by Sheva. I eventually just stopped giving her ammo.Kenji wrote: Nah, I can see him meaning RE5. RE4, as different as it was from the traditional Resident Evil, still had more in common with the rest of the series than RE5 did. By the time we get to 5, it's a straight-up third-person shooter with virtually none of the exploration/adventure elements that were still in RE4.
...
Gameplay-wise, RE5 is probably my favorite, and I really like RE4.

This so much fucking this.MMY wrote:The only thing killing the Silent Hill series is the idiotic fans.
I respect SM infinitely more than Homecoming because at least it's trying to stand out as something more than fan service. SH can make a comeback, but some people who know what the fuck they were doing need to do it, taking what made the older games great without it being blatant copy and paste crap to satisfy the whinier fans, because they are impossible to please.

Nah, I have played Silent Hill 1 and 2, Homecoming and this, 1 and this are my faves.
The sky is a pale white, the snow brings a familiar dead silence. An owl breaks the silence, odd for owls at this time, then you hear a car and realize you aren't in Silent Hill, just in your neighborhood that just got snow and has been snow-less for the past 10 years.
I just want to cast my lot here as well. The cult was fine for Sh1 and SH3, where they should have bowed out, but by Homecoming they've just gotten ridiculous. And stale. And one-dimensional. And fucking boring.Lobsel Vith wrote:I'm glad someone else feels the same way - that whole plot basis is no longer edgy nor provocative. Shattered Memories' power comes from the fact that its something anyone can relate to, since it revolves around a normal person's emotional suffering, not some absurd cult's outlandish and villainous schemes. The Order has gotten so over-blown and ridiculous that you can't even take it seriously anymore.
In my opinion, Shattered Memories is this series' only fucking hope.

I feel pretty much the same way. The cult scenario was wrapped up nicely in 3, there's really no need to explore it any further. Homecoming was a nice little addendum, but I fear any more attempts at using to cult will come off as stale (something Homecoming was accused of, though I personally disagree with that claim).
As far as Shattered Memories killing the series, I couldn't disagree more. The game is second only to SH2 as my favorite in the series, and ranks as my favorite Wii game (and I love me some Super Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess). It may not play like the old SH titles, and it's certainly lacking the scares, but it is very much a Silent Hill in spirit, moreso than The Room, Origins, or Homecoming IMO (all of which I enjoyed BTW).
Once again, awesome responses.
So heres the next question you may want to answer, or if not that's ok.
For those of you who have played SM or those of you who have heard of/seen the gameplay, would you prefer a return to the Otherworld setting and a relation back to the town's power or would you prefer a continuation of this games deviation from that setting and perhaps a creation of new constructs that involve people with Silent Hill?
I would kind of vote yes here, only because I'm worried as to where the series might be heading in regards to the actual town of Silent Hill. I'm worried that the games will end up being completely devoid of most of Silent Hill history, yet still claim to be a Silent Hill game. I'm curious to hear everyones thoughts.

As far as the blood and rust motif? I think it's been mostly played out at this point. Perhaps they can return to it in the future, but it seems a bit too early to be hitting that theme up again. Besides, wasn't that tied to specifically Alessa (and her various incarnations)?Once again, awesome responses.

I would like them to return to the concept of the town being malignant, though. Not so much the cult stuff, but rather explore the history of the town in more detail. I rather like the idea of the town having more sinister associations than just the cult stuff. Maybe the town was "evil" before the cult, before the Native American legends, before all of that stuff? Hell, maybe even make a Silent Hill that takes place back in the colonial times? There are tons of possibilities...
So yeah... tl;dr
I want the whole concept of the "Otherworld" and the town's perceived power to remain, just hold the blood & rust interior decorations, k?
How can I be lost if I've got nowhere to go?

Spoilers...
I like the idea that its people that influence the otherworld and not the other way around. I think the original's cult gave it to much room for a simple explanation. Its the devil! Or something like it... It would lead you to think that. Thats why I love SH2. It was the first SH I played and it confused the hell out of me because I had no idea the cult existed. I think it had a bigger impact on me because I didn't blame it on jerks conjuring demons. It was what it was. I think SH would gain a lot from going into that direction. Perhaps not critically.
As to the origin of the otherworld itself and all the apparent dimensional screwiness in Silent Hill... I would like it to remain out of the mysticism category. Spells and magic and rituals... That would strike me as played out and corny. Perhaps the otherworld isnt just an apect of the town, but reality itself? When was it stated that the otherworld "lived" in silent hill? Maybe its a part of everyone everywhere.

This is the best Silent Hill game ever made, period. It kept everything wonderful and good about the series (save, admittedly, some puzzle difficulty) and dropped most of the stupid baggage no one really gave a fuck about while being totally and completely original and fun. And I don't know about you guys, but my first play-through, the monsterless bits scared the balls out of me, even though I knew I was safe. Great atmosphere.

That's very good to hear. I've only played it once, and I liked it, but I want to full package! Of course, it's taking its time in the mail. At least I got enough time to beat the surprisingly excellent Homecoming.AuraTwilight wrote:This is the best Silent Hill game ever made, period. if it takes more time I'll have to play through SH2 or 3 again. SH fever!

I feel that it would be great that the series takes a step away from the cults, and more to people's feelings and stuff that we can relate to more easily.
SM was a great game, but I sort of expected what would happen, so it kinda destroys the feeling for me; still, I would love to see more of these types of SH.

The only thing that could be considered killing this series are fans who refuse to move forward. I bought Shattered Memories the day that it released, but due to a busy schedule I haven't been able to finish yet. I'm loving it, and I agree with whoever said that it's scary even during the safe bits.

And I said no. This game is saving the series... particulary with the quote from Droo. I really want more AU and stop all this bullshit of "but don't worry, IT'S NOT CANON!!!!!!!".

People seem to forget 2 and 4 had a lot more in the otherworld than blood and rust or something. I dunno, the ice theme just didn't do it for me the way SH2 and 3 did it. I don't find SM not scary because "I can't move forward", I find it not scary because it really fucking isn't. Dead Space scared me more than this, and fuck all if that game is scary.
Either way, I don't see how a game being good or bad 'kills a series'. If it sells like shit, then it's killing the series, but that's not what we're focusing on, which pretty much makes this a topic where we talk out of our asses about how its glorious new direction will somehow keep the series running.
