I know this was posted all the way at the start of the thread, but I frequent the Gamefaqs forums. I'd appreciate it if you could keep your name calling or jerky remarks to yourself. After SH1, SH3, The Movie, Origins and Homecoming the cult has pretty much been done to death, I agree. I was just expecting SH1 in Shattered Memories and got SH2, that's all.
Like I said though, no worries, it was an awesome game.

I frequented the GameFAQs forum for Silent Hill: Shattered Memories for a while. I kind of gave up, honestly, because it was tiring trying to balance what I've said there and here.
Anyway, I don't think this game is killing Silent Hill at all. While I'd love to see a different atmosphere and have it be more scary (though it did make me tense when originally playing it), it's a fun game. I don't feel it spoonfeeds at all; there's still tons of interpretation.
I would like to continue to see an expansion of this universe of Silent Hill, and find out if the Otherworld actually exists or if Silent Hill is a regular town.
Personally, I don't mind the Cult. I don't want more stories about them, but they are what caused the Otherworld originally. I don't mind that; if it comes down to it and they feel the need to explain it, it should be done with a small note or something that could imply a cult accidentally creating it.

it's not killing the series if you enjoy the game, however if you dislike SM then yes, it is. it's all a matter of opinion really, and I don't really care for SM so for me, yeah, it's killing the series. i could get into the reasons why i just don't care for this game, but i don't like being the guy who sucks the life out of a party.

To be fair Aura, i don't think i should share my reasons, seeing as it'd be from the point of view of someone who's never played the game. it's why i said "i just don't care for the game," rather than saying i don't like it.
i've looked at all the preview videos/screens, read reviews (positive and negative), watched some of the walkthroughs for the game on youtube, and know the story/twist (i spoiled it for myself cos i have no interest in playing the game now). it's just one of those instances where little to nothing excited me at first, but i was going to buy it due to it being a new SH title. then once it released, a number of things happened and it killed any chance of me getting it. this is the only SH game where i've had zero interest in actually playing the game (well, this and that arcade shooter).
i didn't get to experience the story for myself, but what i came across from the spoiler section and discussions was pretty interesting. The VA seemed pretty good from the walkthrough vids i've seen, but those nightmare sequences are a HUGE turnoff imo, even from just watching them. i can't even imagine how frustrated and bored i'd be if i were actually playing. the idea of non-stop running, and shaking off monsters never appealed to me, and when i saw it in action, all i could do is cringe. also, whenever Harry was in the normal world, i became bored and had to keep fighting the urge to hit "X" on my browser. puzzles seemed rather easy as well from what i saw, but i don't really care for overly difficult puzzle solving, so that wasn't a huge problem.
with all that said, im pretty sure im in the minority of those who either dislike SM, or plan on skipping it due to no interest. this game seems to be getting pretty good reviews from longtime fans and those new to the series, so im happy for that. hopefully this ensures that the series will continue, and maybe i'll enjoy one of their (climax's) future works.

Honestly, I was slightly excited and slightly skeptical of the nightmare portions, but I definitely wound up enjoying them. I wish there were a way to just explore, though.
I'll say this: it's rather unfair to judge a game before actually trying it. Give it a rental; you can beat it in a day. It's, what, $7 wasted if you really wind up disliking it?

Well, today's been Shattered Memories day. I just
I must say, the game's new atmosphere is quite creepy, and the icy sequences bring a fresh type of terror. I've been tense every time! The only trouble I've had is a glitch where Harry seems to think his phones' out when it isn't, and I can't go through doors or even aim and I have to reload the file. Kinda annoying. But so far... hmm... 8 or 8.5/10. Haven't finished it yet, though!

Dude. We're clearly not talking financially.Falconv1.0 wrote:Once again, it's not fucking killing the series if it sells well enough, because then at least it's got enough money to its name for another one to do better. How good someone thinks it is doesn't mean shit if it manages to sell well and is generally well received.

One game having terrible quality does not mean it is 'killing' the series. "This game is bad, thus, it makes all the games worse and means there will never be another good game" is pretty much all I can take from the idea of it 'killing' a series.pj wrote:Dude. I used my 100 point, 10 category scale to rate the game, and I gave it a 83.5... So, that is a pretty good rating. If you see my other Silent Hill scores... rating from a 78 to a 92.5, you'd see that there is a fair amount of solid greatness in this game... although most of it is in the replayability alone. It is overwhelming how many times one could want to play this game, especially with how short it is.
It's not a TRUE silent hill game... but hey, people said that about Resident Evil 4, one of the best in it's series... so, I think we can say that there is a great wind behind Shattered Memories lifting the series... and I hope we can look forward to Shattered Memory type games in the future... ones that have more to do with the Silent Hill universe than thieving, yet awesome twists. lol

I don't make a signature.
Except for the part of the signature explaining that I don't.
And that.

"Killing the series" is a figure of speech. What we're talking about is whether or not we like this new direction that Shattered Memories heads in.Falconv1.0 wrote:One game having terrible quality does not mean it is 'killing' the series. This brings up a good point. I should really clarify a bit better what I mean by "killing the series." I'm not necessarily referring to Silent Hill dying off, but moreso the original feel of the game dying off. I mean, obviously with an entirely different team behind the production, the game is not going to be taking the same route as the others, but I guess here's a new question.
If Team Silent said they were going to make a new Silent Hill, let's just say Silent Hill 6 (Working Title) and the game was going to have an original Silent Hill story like SH 2 that does not involve the cult. OR Climax is going to make SM2 (Working Title)
Which one would you choose?

I'd be fine, either way.Cactusgod wrote:If Team Silent said they were going to make a new Silent Hill, let's just say Silent Hill 6 (Working Title) and the game was going to have an original Silent Hill story like SH 2 that does not involve the cult. OR Climax is going to make SM2 (Working Title)

That said, I'll depart from the obvious sentiment: A new Japanese team has more to prove than Climax, at this point. Shattered Memories is a strong installment (and I'll be very interested to see how well it does, financially) and has essentially proven that the Konami of America/Climax partnership is capable of great things. Meanwhile, the last Japanese Silent Hill product, The Escape, looks wholly unimpressive in comparison.
Even if the best members of Team Silent reprised their best roles through some combination of voodoo magic and blackmail, it's been years since any of them has worked on the material, which could mean good or bad things.
As long as the result is satisfactory to me: that's really all I give a damn about.

If we're going off "the original feel" of the series, then SH2 already killed it. This entire train of thought is silly.
Why not both? It's not like there only has to be one or the other in the real world. If Team Silent said they were going to make a new Silent Hill, let's just say Silent Hill 6 (Working Title) and the game was going to have an original Silent Hill story like SH 2 that does not involve the cult. yeah, but i wasn't interested in the game even before i watched the walkthroughs and learned the twist. and this is the first SH game where i had no interest in playing it before i knew everything. however, i'm gonna take ww_andi's advice and rent it for the wii. i just bought my sis one for xmas, so i'll ask her if i can borrow it for a couple days and play it. who knows, maybe i'll be proven wrong and love it like many others here.AuraTwilight wrote:Well, I could retort that all of the games look boring and zero interesting if I watch them and learn the twist without playing. There's no emotional investment on my part.
