Maybe SH1's Bad Ending tied to SH:SM events. After Harry died in the crash, Cheryl grew up and had Harry in his mind.

I believe that this general idea could have inspired the idea for the game itself, however, there's more or less too much to try to fit in to make this truly canon. In fact, you have to outright deny some of the other canon occurences in past games.

As with most things though, it's arguable. It's been argued here, actually.
