I'd say the last half hour of Audition counts, and that's practically a relief after the trippy shit you get put through right before that.

Audition is a *great* movie. I kinda wish I hadn't brought it up though, because even mentioning it in the same sentence as "torture porn" spoils the movie a little bit... but oh well. Let's not say anything more. If you like horror movies, you absolutely must see Audition!

^Hell, the term torture porn just pisses me off in general, but I'll try not to start an off topic rant about it.

Pff I think it's funny how everyone either thinks that the last half hour is awful and the rest of the movie is great or the last half hour is great and the rest of the movie is awful. I kinda wanna see it just to know where I stand.

^ I saw it, and i thought it was decent. The movie is VERY slow building and i actually thought it was kind of boring for a little while(there is some weird shit that happens here and there throughout the entire movie though). The final scenes are kind of intense though.

As far as torture porn movies i've heard philosophy of a knife is brutal, i've kinda been curious about it but i heard it's extremely long.

Also i think the problem with some games/movies is that they seem to think that violence and gore=scariness, when that's not the case at all. Violence and gore can be effective but that alone isn't enough to make something scary.

I love Audition, I think the whole movie is great. Most people I know seem to love it too. I don't think the build up is boring, there's enough creepiness and weirdness that you feel uneasy the whole time, and when the payoff finally happens it is amazing.

And speaking of gore movies, I've heard Cannibal Holocaust is good, though I haven't seen it.

Gore definitely doesn't equal scariness by itself, but when used right it can be a powerful tool. Sometimes it's called for, and I don't think it should be shied away from, either.

I used to be a gore movie lover but not interested anymore they are getting cheesy and lame... I have a movie you blokes might want to check out though... Its called 'The Fall Before Paradise' I found it in a bargain bin at a discount store for like $2... The cover reminded me of a silent hill game. Theres no gore and it is a full on mindfuck about a mental patient and there is a maria character too.
I found this creek a quiet place... away from the rat race somewhere i can be me... as i stared into that calmness

It just seems like games have been getting so casual-oriented recently. What I mean by that specifically is that games are afraid to punish the player. The player must always be constantly rewarded and making progress, and heaven forbid there be any setbacks!
Not only horror games, sadly. The director of Tekken series, Katsuhiro Harada,
on the topic of unlockable characters, said:

"That's kind of outdated now though, especially with online play.
If we were to have locked characters it would irritate a lot of people,
to be playing against others online and to not have all the characters available.
So I think it's no longer useful."

I can't believe the director of such a great game is such a fucking dumbshit.
HOW IS IT REWARDING TO PLAY ANYMORE?!
Why would someone play online in the first place, if they haven't even bothered to play the story entirely?
Shouldn't it be more of an encouragement to play the game if you don't have all the characters?

That's generally true. There's a balance between the rewards you earn, how difficult it is to get them, and whether it's ultimately worth it to you to get them. For many casual gamers, they don't especially care about getting that super cool costume by playing hard mode, or getting Roger Jr. Now you can get "bonus" stuff by purchasing DLC or pre-ordering a game. For whatever reason, it's just as rewarding for the casual player to purchase the bonus as it is for the hardcore gamer to play for it.

The deal is, the company gets more money when they just sell you the bonus stuff instead of you earning stuff that's already in the game. It's not just because casual gamers aren't willing to work for it, but because it's more profitable that way. Besides, it's not like the average hard core gamer is somehow less inclined to purchase DLC because they aren't earning it.

I was thinking, maybe there can be a whole bunch of unlockables that you get the password for if you beat it on hard. That way I can still look up the password online and get some of them if I'm interested. I did that to get a few costumes in SH3.

Of course, the DLC aspect comes in and reaps all the cash. Fucking greedy-ass bastards.
It's like saying "Oh there's no need to do favours to the gamers, they're just the ones who made us, but now we own them."

What you said would be a perfect system; Buy a character if you're a casual gamer, earn it if you're a hardcore gamer.
Bonus stuff would be useless crap like Darth Vader skin for Yoshimitsu or something along that example.

^I suppose they balance that whole fuck-our-original-business-base by giving us the achievements that come with the game? Iunno... It does feel kinda cheap. Still, plenty of games still give us the bonus earned stuff, so at least our little personal moments of achievement haven't gone the way of the dodo, right?

I could care less about the trophies or achievements...i don't mind playing through a game to unlock certain characters or modes, but what i don't like is how you have to buy content, that is already on the disk, so they make you buy it, like different costumes....that's crazy.

We're paying $60.00 for these games and to hold back content that is already on the disk is just lame and is just another way of squeezing more money out of you, so instead of paying $60.00 for a game, you're probably ending up paying $74-$78 dollars for it.

Mass Effect2(ps3) has all of the downloadable content on it and i've already clocked in over 70 hours on it....that is a game worth $60.00 dollars...

They've just figured out another way to make money, that doesn't really bother me(though I see your point). What worries me is how the hell they're going to incorporate DLCs into a Silent Hill game.

yeah, but ME2 on PS3 came bundled with everything because it's been on the 360 for over a year, and is only like $20 right now. 360 owners had to initially buy all of the DLC separately, so they actually spent around $90 dollars or more for all that stuff.

i don't really like DLC to be honest, however with some games, the DLC is actually well worth what you're spending. Games like Bioshock 2 (Minerva's Den DLC), Gears of War 2 (map packs), or the Fallout DLC's are good examples. However, Capcom charging an arm and a leg for bonus costumes with their fighting games is just pathetic.

Exactly. TO MAKE MONEY.
They don't give a fuck about gamers anymore, just money and paying customers. They see fans as bunches of money. People, bunches of money.

^That's kinda why they got into the business in the first place. It's a business, of course they want to make money.

DLC is just like any other purchase... sometimes it's worth your money, sometimes it's not. The same can be said for the actual games, too.

This is true, but what's so bothersome is that a number of games that come out now are pretty much unfinished intentionally. Developers know they can make their game, hold back content (or simply rush the game), and then just release things later on as DLC to make more money. I remember EA doing this with the Madden games a few years back, where you'd have to buy certain options to make them available in your season mode. ridiculous.

lets not even get into how stupid EA's online pass is.
