Re: Ito's Japan boxart revealed
Maybe if we get a chance to look at it in a higher resolution it will be easier to see if the blue background is indeed streaks of rain.
The Bacon influence is obvious, but I can't help but dislike the relative overtness of the screaming mouth in comparison to the blurry murk of the rest of the image, for me it's a little too contrasting.
Also - this is just a banner for a trade show. Maybe it's not Ito's final design. Perhaps he did more than just 1 and the spares were used for promotional purposes like this. I mean, what if the end case art is a super-zoomed in version of this image on the mouth? Or spliced with the PAL territories 'Exorcist' silhouette of the postman dude...

Re: Ito's Japan boxart revealed
I remember reading something awhile ago that said something along the lines that Americans prefer box art that shows off the main character. Usually in an empowering way.
You can see a lot of NA box art has this style.
Other regions are different and tend to lean different ways with their covers.
Personally though, all I care about is the game. Who cares what the stupid box looks like? As long as it holds my disc and protects it I don't really care.

He said on his twitter that it's the real design. He says a higher res version should be on the official Japanese site soon.19pack wrote:Maybe it's not Ito's final design. Glad i'm not the only one reminded of The Exorcist on that other one. ^_^
Re: Ito's Japan boxart revealed
Seems suitable for me, like some dude being caught in a heavy downpour. Though in a topsy turvy manner where it seems odd to tell whether it's raining upwards or downwards, as the torrential downpour could be seen to originate from him upwards (or downwards depending on perspective) disintegrating him as it goes. So I think it abstractly suits the title of the game where water as a catalyst is something to be afraid of... It's also mroe stylistically in line with the old game's boxart I feel...nur_ein_tier wrote:That being said, I wish we got that cover here. =0( Not sure if it's gonna really represent the game's story or whatever, but it looks cool enough.
Whatever the case, maybe hypothetically something better could be done, but there's no denying it's leagues better than what the US boxart teased so far looks like.
Re: Ito's Japan boxart revealed
It kind of just looks like generic horror art to me. I like the American art better.

Re: Ito's Japan boxart revealed
No no. I mean yes, they changed the whole cover but boxart is a very small part of the game and it does not determine whether the game will be good or bad and yet it affected my opinion about the game in a good way.Xev wrote: By small changes you mean the whole thing?
I dunno, its a cool picture I guess. Im pretty let down though for some reason. ..was all excited to see this title and then...
There was a SIGNATURE here. It's gone now.
Re: Ito's Japan boxart revealed
Quite generic, but new and refreshing in an interesting way, I quite like it! I hope it gets released in a rusty (or steel, like 19pack said).
I think the only reason that it's getting a lot of praise would be because of the comparison with the NTSC and PAL boxarts. Again, if this were released first, it would have gotten more criticism than praise right now. Right?

I love the Silent Hill Series. The games: Homecoming, Origins, and Shattered Memories, did nothing wrong whatsoever, they were developed well, and did things different. Just because they were not by Team Silent doesn't mean that they're bad games. I believe in this series. I believe that one day, we can have a game that will make all Silent Hill fans Happy. I believe that Silent Hill Downpour can achieve this.
Team Silent may be gone, but their series isn't. Instead... it's here, it's alive.
If you agree, add it to your sig.

Re: Ito's Japan boxart revealed
Well for a series that deals with abstract settings made from a particular character's mind, abstract boxart is more fitting in my opinion...
The US boxart with the dude with the Ax isn't bad, but kinda of doesn't get the idea of SIlent Hill across for me. If I take the Silent Hill title off of it and replace it with something from one of the old Fireman arcade games, you wouldn't know anything was amiss... This isn't about a game with a guy and an ax who's a firefighter... Given that we don't see his head or his clothes that clearly, I would bet people would simply assume he had a fire helmet on... Either that or this guy's simply some kind of ax murderer... and it's raining. Guess there's downpour in the title, but again does this have to do with putting out fires or is the water simply there for atmosphere? He doesn't seem afraid of it or anything, liek what Downpour's concept is supposed to make you feel about water... It's certainly simple and striking, but I'm hard pressed to really draw any meaning from it like I did above with Ito's boxart...
All I get from the US boxart is that here's a powerful and possibly dangerous guy standing in the rain. This game involves some kind of melee action and violence. The image is probably one where you feel empowered by being this character who is soldiering on.
Ito's boxart is more abstract. You're seeing a man, but what is he going through? Is he in pain? Is he transforming into something? Is he being washed away? Is the torrential downpour hurting him? Is he trying to get away, to get out, but is trapped? He lookslike he's screaming and yelling out, but contrasted to a title with SILENT in it it's like we can't hear him scream, or rather that it is being drowned out by the sound of the heavy downpour.
Ito's boxart get my mind going much more as to what the game is about... Whereas the US boxart is more directly tring to portray something but is also somewhat confusing... It might still be better marketing wise as direct marketing tends to work better in the US alongside empowering character portrayals, but I don't personally feel it's better than what Ito's conveys.

Re: Ito's Japan boxart revealed
Honestly, I think the only reason it's getting praise is 'cuz Ito did it. This looks more phoned-in than his proposed Homecoming cover. It was pretty clear, back then, that he didn't give a shit. It's twice as clear, now.simeonalo wrote:I think the only reason that it's getting a lot of praise would be because of the comparison with the NTSC and PAL boxarts.

Huh... it looks... scary. I'm not sure it's a kind of scary I like, and it's a very different kind of scary than the old Silent Hills, but that's the first time the cover of an SH game has looked scary to me. So I guess I'm impressed.

^ Love how rape was capitalized in that, xD I don't see anything abstract or original in Ito's boxart imo.

No, see, he tripped and spilled his glass of milk over his black and blue painting. It's totally abstract, you just don't get it.VenusDoom wrote:I don't see anything abstract or original in Ito's boxart imo.
