Farting in a packed elevator twice.

But I doubt you have to worry about clogging our tubes with double posts. You're above the law in these parts.

At the risk of sounding ignorant, how does everyone know that's the real Tom Waltz?
It could be just some guy, right?
I've never seen Matt Groening or Dan Castellaneta on the Simpsons forum I've been visting for years. Just sayin'
'Ahh!'
'Shouldn't you be at work?'
'Yes sir, Mr. Burns.'
'Well then. Go back to work, wherever it is you work, whoever you are.'

He would have been shown the door by now.

Believe me, we all get extra skeptical whenever someone shows up claiming to be one of the minor gods, so if you see a join date that isn't yesterday, it's safe to assume they are legit.

I kinda hope Murphy is a rapist or a pedophile, I'd like to see a change from the nice-guy protagonists who were ~just the victims~ and didn't really seem to deserve being punished. At least make us feel more conflicted about Murphy.

If nothing else, it would be more interesting than the old murder cliche. After so many of these predictable twists...well, killin' a person ain't no big deal. /shot

A rapist or pedophile would make for less of a conflicted relationship between player and character because rape and pedophilia are pretty much universally loathed activities by the game's target audience, and are pretty much impossible to justify in any way.

It's why James is a more interesting character than Eddie or Angela: Eddie can't possibly justify his actions to anybody but himself and Angela is the precise opposite, only the hardest moralist would fault her for what she did. James' situation, on the other hand, is highly ambiguous when it comes to morals, mostly because his situation is far more complex. Is it wrong to kill? But, what if she's terminally ill? Does he have the right to make this decision? Would it have been even worse to let her suffer until she died naturally? Did he do it out of mercy? Anger? Hate? All these?

Unlike with Eddie and Angela, none of these questions have easy or clear answers. That's why, if we have to have a criminal as a protagonist, he pretty much has to have done something which isn't Complete Monster territory, otherwise that empathic link won't work very well.

Ooh, I hadn't really thought of all that!

I had Alex and Travis in mind more than James, but I guess your mileage may vary all the same, because I didn't really have a hard time empathizing with James either - even after I'd realized what he'd done.

I think it'd still be possible to empathize with a rapist/pedophile/etc, if you balanced the sympathetic aspects with the...well, the unforgivable monster aspects. But Murphy doesn't really have to be a rapist, just so long as it wasn't an accident again, whatever he did!

Him being a pedophile would be fucking awful, oh wow really nice to know I've been playing a really awful person, way to kick me out of the story because now I fucking loathe the main character. Give him something ambiguous like alone in the town said.

I swear you people talk so much about how it's about story then you say you want a character you can't relate to or sympathize with in the slightest, how the fuck does that work.

If Murph was a pedophile, I would happily get that quick Game Over ending every opportunity given.

Why does no one ever talk about this little bit, taken from the wiki: "At one point in the trailer, Murphy comes across a police badge with a black mourning stripe, the type used for officers killed in action. However, he does not react when he sees it."

GEE I WONDER IF THAT MIGHT MEAN SOMETHING.

This is more anecdote than proof, but the member TomWaltz first showed up waaaay back to pimp his then-upcoming miniseries, Sinner's Reward. This was long before anyone knew who he was or what he was capable of, never mind long before he was ever being considered to write for a Silent Hill game.

Think of what the comics environment was like before Sinner's Reward and Past Life. At that time, claiming to be an author of a Silent Hill comic book was no way to gain popularity. He had to build that up over years, against a lot of skepticism, and no internet troll has the patience to do that.

The ones that do kinda deserve to win.

Frankly, the level of skill required to pull something like that off...

Well, you wouldn't be writing a Silent Hill story. You'd be selling bridges to all the fools of the world and making billions.

Or maybe he didn't react because, due to his situation, he loathes cops?

Like Mephisto, I do think a rapist/pedophile story could work, I really do. You can empathize with a character without condoning his or her past (or even current) actions, no matter how vile. I just read a novel called "Grendel", told from the perspective of the murderous beast in the poem "Beowolf". This guy would go around killing old men, women, children, priests, and yet it was written in such a way that I really felt for the character while still disagreeing with his actions. He displayed tremendous inner turmoil, if not actual regret, and that came out in the writing. I felt compelled and repelled by his character all at once.

So, given the writing is fantastic, and Murphy displays enticing psychological and emotional conflict, they could pull it off. Maybe. Okay probably not.
