Silent Hill Experienced Interview with Devin and Tomm

Post by Whitney »

Well this is very exciting, Silent Hill Experienced, the Silent Hill dedicated podcast I'm a co-host on, was able to snag an email fan interview with Devin Shatsky and Tomm Hulett!

This interview mainly consists of Downpour related questions but it does touch on the future of the series and a bit of both the HD Collection and Book of Memories. :)

Do they address what the fuck was going on when that goddamn face on the wall was made, and reassure us that such a thing will not make it into the final game?

Read it for yourself.

(Hint: they make no mention of monsters.)

Great interview. I liked a lot of the responses, especially about handling the fans. The best part by far, though, is Tom Waltz's appearance in the comment section..

I'm starting to think anywhere Tom turns up things get awesome  I like that were finally going to get a proper map, sounds like Silent Hill's actual size will be made concrete at last.

Fantastic interview!

The last question definitely made me laugh.

One thing has me wary is how much Book of Memories may have on the overall SH universe. Time will tell though.

I think Tomm refered to it on Hell Descent as being the equivalent of Star Wars' "Extended Universe"

I'm not liking some of the replies that Tomm guy made. Especially him saying that the 2001 voice over from SH2 was good, but that it needs to meet todays standards. That's total bullshit in my opinion. Don't get me wrong though, I really don't mind it that much that the voice over is being changed. But SH2 should be considered a classic and therefore you shouldn't change stuff like the voices and gameplay etc. Making it HD and surround is tolerated, just like with movies.
But saying that SH2 has to meet todays standards is like saying the blu-ray of A Clockwork Orange needs more explosions and high-speed car chases, because it has to meet todays standards.
'Ahh!'
'Shouldn't you be at work?'
'Yes sir, Mr. Burns.'
'Well then. Go back to work, wherever it is you work, whoever you are.'

I somehow can't get the link work. Could someone please copy the whole thing and paste here if it's not asking too much?

Definitely an extremely interesting interview; love how they're planning out the franchise's future right now. Book of Memories + Downpour being like SH2 + SH3? Sounds awesome. Nice to get another couple into the franchise, lol. Book of Memories sounds interesting, aside from the atrocious gameplay and multiplayer concept.

One thing I love about their answers is where they see the series going in the next installments. They're basically saying things I've been wanting to hear for ages.

When it comes to Book of Memories, I think I'd be alright if the game spoke of the lore and history of Silent Hill in a way that was canon while the story itself remaining outside of the canon. So we could uh, learn about the history of the town and such while playing a fun game outside of the series canon.

I suppose that'd be alright. Still pretty apprehensive like most are.

good read, thanks for the link Whitney.

i liked what Tomm said about combat in Downpour, how "it'll be easy to control like Homecoming," but also "combat isn't the point" like in SH 1-4. at least this way, those who like combat (such as myself) won't be frustrated with the gameplay mechanics while killing as many monsters as we can.

I also agree with the Voiceover comments. if they're going to truly make this game HD and bring everything up to date, the voiceovers may as well be enhanced too.

twoback and Silent Hiller over at Hell Descent got a chance to play the demo, Hiller said "The combat felt pretty good it reminded me of the older (earliest games) in that there was no lock on syle to the fighting Murphy attacks monsters similar to how James Sunderland or Heather Mason did but it doesn't feel as clunkly." which pretty much agree with what was said in the interview :D

But they do lock on when you ready their weapon....what? No you're right every time James pointed at a monster with his gun, allowing me to strafe in a way I couldn't normally, there was no lock on involved.

Unless the usage of the phrase 'lock on' is completely different here, that statement makes noooo fuckin' sense.
