I have keys for DJ Ricks boat in my inventory. Is that the boat you are talking about? So I have to do all the sidequests now before getting on the boat if I want them done?

Yes.That's the one i'm talking about. Now it would be a good time to complete all the side-quests since you are free to explore every area of the town you've already been to.

Every sidequest is now done and finished :) except Digging up the Past. Wait, I lose all my equipment? For good or temporarily? :( does it also apply to first sid kits?

Damn. I don't feel like entering the boat now :( better fill up my health first. I think I missed 2 mysteries. One in the Monastery and one in the Centennial Building. I can't re-enter them, right?

You are right. You cannot re-enter these buildings.

So, I didn't have much time to play yet and I'm not very far in the game, but so far the scares have been mostly predictable... as in, I could tell 'the moment I open that gate something is gonna jump me'. But I'm sure that's just warm up, right?

Anyway, I wanted this game to scare me so much I had a Downpour-themed nightmare about a week before it was due to be out here, and while usually I'm a scaredy cat terrified by bad dreams, this time I was like - 'Awesome, I hope the game is actually like that!' :) Funny thing, now that I finally have it I managed to get completely stuck in the beginning of the mines for a while - not on a puzzle, mind you - I just set the brightness so low I literally couldn't see a staircase right in front of Murphy, I kept walking around in circles, haha.

I want to play now but spring weather is crazy here and the sun is blazing... not the right mood at all. Just an hour ago it was pouring, huh.

Can anyone tell me, without spoiling, if the atmosphere gets pleasantly oppressive later on? FYI, I'm one of those people who didn't find the tutorial part disturbing at all, more like
PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER_SHOW PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER:
'Oh crap, I should have left the object glow on, where's that other weapon?!? He's gonna get away! Ah, got it! *smack*stab*squish* What?! Gory discretion shot?! Aww...'

Eh, sorry for the long post, you can tell I'm a poor European who just started the game and is all excited...

Yes, the atmosphere gets better. As others have said, the creature designs are really lackluster (seriously, there isn't one cool looking monster in this game, except perhaps for the final boss) but the atmosphere makes up for that in my view. The otherworld sequences are really strange. There's gravity defying water, manual rotation of entire rooms, traversing floating clock hands, and of course running from the void. At times, the other world has more Mario style elements to it, but I think it was pulled off well and offered something a little different. And of course there are places in the foggy world where the tension builds up too.

I think the monsters are excellent. They are really terrifying, because in every battle theres an equal chance that you win, or the monster wins. They are quite tough, yet all that's needed to beat them effortlessly, is to figure out a tactic against them. And they can corner you easily because often you fight monsters in narrow places. I Love the monster Designs, the sounds and everything!

I don't think they had Mario in mind so much as reality twisted elements of what we are familier with, yet pretains to the character or plot in some way. Much like Alice in Wonderland/ Through the Looking Glass.
I thought the Otherworld sequences were pulled off well mostly. Mainly in the Monestary and Prison though. The other are over too quickly and without any time to do much but run in them.

I find people who complain about jump scares and horror clichés in SH Homecoming onwards amusing, I mean for crying our loud, SH1 had the body falling out of closet gag, and even the "cat jumps out" fake-scare. SH2 had lying figures jumping out from underneath cars, mannequins jumping over fences, BANGBANGBANG from inside the toilet cubicle... SH3 even uses jump scares that KILL you!

^ I think that the differentiation between jump-scares and other kinds are minute.
They all kind of overlap. :)

I don't know if I said it earlier in the thread or not, but I think of them as a fear orgasm. The atmosphere builds up the tension, creeps into you, makes you feel apprehensive... and then the jump scare gives a SHOCK, you get legitimately startled, and then it's back to square one.

I think jump scares are good for horror games because just knowing that the game *might* throw them at you adds more tension to the whole game. Also, they stand out as interesting set pieces. Silent Hill games have used them sparingly, but I think very well.

Jump scares can fail badly, though. There was one time in Dead Space where I accidentally triggered a jump scare too early and a Necromorph popped out at me from across the room.

I actually think that Konami has a pretty solid recipe for a good Silent Hill game with Downpour. In the start, when I was in the mines, I was always on my toes, even when I heard the smallest sound. At some point I was walking around with the lighter lit, and the camera automaticly looks over Murpheys shoulder, and a very small area where the flame hit, is lit up. A Screamer charged at me, and I almost fell off my chair. lol I got a massive shock. I would deffinetly say that the game is very scary indeed, and when its not scary, its eerie. The atmosphere is spot on, and also having side missions and more exploration in a Silent Hill game is a very welcomed thing in my book. I dont think you should cheat yourself from the good horror experience that SHD will give you. No matter what people say.

So far im only arriving at silent hill now and iv been freaked out alot ALOT!! LOL
PITCHBLACK ROOM- CHECK
SURROUND SOUND HIGH-CHECK

The Devils Pit was really creepy
And I gotta say I was not too keen on the monsters in promos, images but when there attacking me im actually creeped out how they sprint for me is really disturbing  so all in all downpour is just what I wanted from a new Silent Hill and im definatly taking my time with this one.

Its refreshing to have a non action packed survival horror title right now
I love how you can run away from most monsters unlike homecoming

Love the option to peek into rooms first really adds something to the experiance.

So this.
In this time when people is less and less "scareable" , I think jump scares are one of the best resources the games can use . It will never fail to surprise you, It will scare you, despite how cliche it is.
So far I'm finding Downpour a quite scary title; it's disturbing, it's random, it makes you feel eerie enough at some points that you'll think "i'm fucked i'm fucked". I'm considering this game a nice horror tittle (at least for now. didn't finish it yet)~
