Personally, I'd say that he really did trip and fall.

There's holes in parts of the flooring around him, and Claudia could have easily spooked him in someway, that caused him to back down in such a way for him to get a leg caught and fell. Seeing this she probably thought nothing but to finish what she was there to do and left......at least that's my personal scenario.
Value your failures more than your successes. Successes only last until someone screws them up. Failures are forever. She left...and...I'm lost.

Or perhaps douglas was lying, he may have just had enough with it all and thought "Fuck It" and sat there.
