Why did they not put animated cutscenes in SH3 like SH1/2?

Like the opening in SH2.

I'm guessing you mean FMVs, right?

The main reason is because they could do all of the cinemas with the in-game engine. Before, it was either really blocky (SH1) or everybody looked dirty (SH2), and it was kinda awkward. With SH3, aside from the uncanny valley that yawns open with characters' mouths, the in-game graphics are pretty much cinema-quality.

Because in this way you can see the alternate costumes during the normal cutscenes...

Because you don't use FMV cutscenes if you can help it.

The transition between them always looked bad anyway. Thank god the day we got rid of that in gaming history.

Because the in-game models look better than the FMV models in SH1/2.
Why make your cutscenes look straight out of reboot when they're already awesome?

Maybe for just the opening, but not through the whole game.
