Insane Cancer

Heather finds out why it's true that you shouldn't talk to strangers. Or look in mirrors, quite honestly.

Insane Cancer

Post by Mr.Death »

:? I never really thought about symbolism in Silent Hill, until recently. And from what I know, the monsters in Silent Hill symbolize different things for the various charactors. So I started thinking about Heather, and the obese man,Insane Cancer.Does anyone know what,if anything, this monster symbolizes for Heather?

Well if Heather's a mallrat I'm sure she's felt the scorn for overweight people walking slowly or blocking her way into stores.. >.>

That doesn't say anything about the cancer...or I didn't find it.
Perhaps she's just feared of cancer? She stopped smoking, so...

It doesn't say much still. It just says something along the line "the creature suggests a cancerous mass". Most of SH3 creator commentary doesn't tell you much on what they really symbolize.

It symbolizes fear of some sort of malignant growth inside one's own body. It's not a reference to Heather's smoking past, it's a reference to Alessa's fear of the thing that is growing inside her.

I'd assume the "cancer running wild" bit is the explanation, talking about the Otherworld, maybe about the cult. Seems to make sense, anyway--then again, maybe they put it there for fun.

Biologically, the fetus can be considered a type of cancer. It has all the characteristics of a cancer. So, I think the Insane Cancer monsters are manifestations of her fear of what's growing inside her body.

Burning Man - I love that explanation. I should marry you.

But what about Pendulum? Do you have any personal interpretation on the monster?

Or she saw the Godfoetus growing inside of her as something akin to a tumor - which is was, in essence. Can't really blame her for thinking that way.
I'm not dead yet, dammit.

Awww...I was going to say that. Oh well.

In any case, the Pendulums could be nothing special, just a cool monster. But if you want to find the follow the "Birth and Abortion" angle, well, they're sharp and slashy. Could have to do with abortion or somesuch, but I think that's stretching it too far.

I did write up some Monster Theories on the last page of http://silenthillforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=2069

but everyone stopped discussing directly after....

This was it.

"Here's a few theories....

Insane Cancer - I would personally say that the Insane Cancer is a manifestation of Alessa's pain when she was sick in Hospital, she saw the God not as a bringer of salvation but instead as a Cancer inside her, growing with her suffering and pain, and as such, Heather (although she doesnt realise it) see's it in such a way to remind her of what she carries and how it is feeding off of her and getting bigger and bigger.

Numb Bodies - Already discussed, a mark of things to come, they appear just after Heather get's her first taste of Gods wrath on the Shopping Mall, indicating that it's begining, later on the more mature form of them indicates that the time for birth (or not as the ending suggests) is upon Heather.

Slurpers - I'm not quite sure of these in all honesty, although it could be that they are Cult members transfigured by Heathers manifestations of hatred towards them, they are on all fours....I wonder if this may signify worship....Ok think about it.
They crawl along the floor constantly and attempt to attack Heather, main attack being grabbing her legs, now this could be.

1) They are Cult members transfigured by Heathers views of them, they lie on all fours as a mark of respect to the God she carries inside her, they also know (from Claudia) that Heather must feel pain, suffering and anger to birth God, they have decided to fall to their knees and give up their lives for the God inside heather and thus, attack Heather and allow themselves to be killed by her for God's purposes, a Mark of respect and Sacrifice for the ultimate paradise they so crave.

2) Alessa's view of her treatment, manifested into Heather, as such Heather see's the Slurpers as Alessa see's herself, crawling on the floor like a confused child, scavenging for anything (slurpers apparently suck up the flesh and rust) she can get, the attack of grabbing Heathers legs is evident of desperation, Heather of course kicks them off, leaving them to play dead (Alessa's only wish was to be at peace)

I've got a few more theories about the Slurpers but i'll get back to em later.

3) Pendulum - A figment of Pain manifested by Heather, everything about the pendulum signifies pain and suffering, not to mention fear, Heather is thrust suddenly and abruptly into her horrific situation, she is scared, confused and fearful of new people.
Pendulum is designed in a way that covers all of these areas.
Human figure in the center - Heathers meeting of new people, all of who she cant quite trust (also a figment of Alessa's fear of adults)
Knifes and sharp objects on Pendulums body - Pain and Fear, both are invoked by these instruments.
Spinning attack - significant of the the cycle of life and death, another thing to be fearful of.
Screeching sound when attacking - Signifies confusion and again fear, the inability to think straight, Heathers life is shattered and as such she is totally unable to make sense of anything which is what the screeching sound signifies as I mentioned fear and confusion.

Closers - The feeling of being trapped, Closers large bodies are overpoweringly large, they give the feeling of no escape and a claustraphobic sense, Heathers feelings once again manifest into something she fears, she's not in control of the world she's in, she's stuck and cant escape, also a manifestation of Alessa and her inability to escape from her tormentors.

Split Head Dogs - 2 Heads signify the joining of Heather and Alessa as one, Dogs body is bandaged and raw, signifying Alessa's treatment and her awful burns.

That's my personal Theories on the monsters I listed, I typed them up as they came to me, in a semi organised way."

Yes,the cancer explanation sounds pretty logical to me,mirroring her own fear of the malignant growth within.
