I give it 8 out of 10.
Most notorious flaws in my book:
1). There is an aggregation of bloody disgusting scenes in the beginning of the movie that made me worry if this is how frequent we'll have them throughout the whole thing. Fortunately it gets better on balancing bloody and atmospheric from there.
2). A couple of dialogues between Heather and Vincent were kinda not my thing, specifically their quarrels. Could have been done more interesting.
3). Heather only used her gun twice, then defeated a certain boss in a pretty lame and anticlimactic way.
Otherwise I liked it much. Left the cinema with a smile on my face - a clear sign of a good movie :). Also loved the fanservice-filled end sequence to bits.

Well, I'm back. For those who don't want to read too much, I'd give it around a 6 out of 10.

I'm probably gonna end up echoing a few people, but I'm taking all this from what I was thinking during my viewing. Where do I start? I didn't hate it. I went in expecting to be extremely disappointed, but I came out feeling ok.about it. It wasn't a horrible film to me.

I'll start with the acting. Honestly, I thought it was really bad. Not all of it mind you, but there was quite a bit of of cringe worthy moments. Vincent felt extremely awkward at all times. For what should have been a touching scene
[Reveal] Spoiler:
Rhada Mitchell was so stilted, and her dialogue was worse. I couldn't stand the "my love" stuff.
Sean Bean was ok. Adelaide Clements as Heather, I admit, was actually pretty decent, but she was given some iffy dialogue. The actress playing Claudia was alright, but we don't get to see too much of her. And lastly Malcom McDowell was...well Malcom McDowell. Pretty good, but quite over the top.

I think the story is where I have my biggest problems. I kind of fell it was all over the place. I appreciate that Bassett tried to do the story of SH3, I loved the nods we got. Problem is, it just doesn't work.
[Reveal] Spoiler:
So we know the Order wants Heather back because she is the key to removing the darkness from Silent Hill...which I thought was removed when Sharon and Alessa rejoined at the end of the first film...which apparently didn't happen. But we do get to find out how Sharon came back to Christopher/Harry. How Rose figured that out, we'll never know. So again, the Order wants Sharon back to join with Alessa because Alessa was burned to prove herself as the vessel to birth God. Ok...well at least they were trying to get the game storyline right here. The God would have awakended and removed the darkness and cleansed the world.
The problem I have with the spoilered part is that it isn't really talked about. We get some exposition early on, we get some more before entering the town, and we get the expostion at the end. Again, I didn't actually hate the story, it just comes off as being very convuluted.

I'm not going to analyze the chracters too much. Heather is pretty close to the game. Vincent is nothing like his game counterpart. We don't get too much of Sean Bean but he's pretty close to the first film. Same goes for Dahlia. Every other new chraacter, Douglas, Claudia, Leonard, we don't really get to know long enough to learn about their movie counterparts. I know a lot of people debated in the other thread, but I really feel this film should have been longer, if only to give us time to breath and let us get to know more about these chraacters.

I thought the set design was really good. As for scares, I wish we'd got more like the mannequin scene. It was a part of the film that really amnaged to build suspense, although it needed a better payoff.

I'm kind of torn on how the power of the town was portrayed. Since the games establish the town holds power of its own, I am ok for the most part, but the movie really likes to play it like everything is directly connected to Alessa, so the fact that it is "a place of souls" and stuff sort of doesn't hold water here, but I'll let it slide. That also begs the question of, in the first film it was clear that Rose and Sharon entered the town because of Sharon, whereas Christopher couldn't enter. However, a very minor chracter at one point claims that she got there because "they took a wrong turn into the fog." Didn't think it worked that way.

Also, not the last five minutes, but basically the ending to the film is the biggest bit of fan service ever shoved into a video game film. It really, really does not fit a Silent Hill film in the least, but in a way, it is also kind of awesome.

Speaking of the ending (don't read this if you want to catch some nods for yourself.)
[Reveal] Spoiler:
The last five minutes are full of nice nods for fans, and huge sequel bait. First off, Harry staying in Silent Hill to look for his wife. It screams Silent Hill 2 but from a very different perspective. Secondly, Travis has a cameo and mentions "having not been that way in a long time." Lastly, as Travis and Heather and Vincent leave, we see police escorting a prison but through the road leading into Silent Hill, suggesting Downpour.
I have to say, that was pretty awesome. There were a lot of other references to the games, and I liked trying to find them.

Overall I didn't hate it. It was pretty decent but could have been so much better.

Edit: I know this is being talked about elsewhere, but I really feel this film need to be longer. Had it been 108 minutes instead of 94, I feel like it would have given enough time for some extra character development, and a little time to settle and build suspense like the first film. Given that there are a number of stills that didn't show up in the film, I'm very certain it was either hacked up quite a bit due to the studio, or to fit a certain runtime. I'm hoping for a director's cut that might give us a better film.

Guys, you don't need to 'reserve a post'. The thread will still be functioning normally when you get back, unless you are commenting about someone else's review you don't need to tell us that you're going to see it. Just post a review when you get back.

You two update when you've seen, If I see anyone else doing this I will simply remove the post.

Just saw it like an hour ago..

Wow..... its bad... REAL BAD. Its direct to DVD/Syfy channel bad, I was shocked. I went to see the movie with zero expectations. I kept telling myself its an adaptation and sequel to the first movie and I shouldn't think about the games at all. It didn't help and every minute I saw had me cringing in my seat. First of all the movie has no sense of progression, tension or emotion. The dialog is laughable, just lifeless and boring. I can't blame any of the actors, they were just saying the shit that was on paper.

One of the things that I loved from the first movie was its great atmosphere and how isolated the town felt. There is so much crap in Revelation that we never get a sense of tension in the real world and "otherworld" scenes. The movie moves so fast that it never stops and lets you take in the story that its trying to tell. Its like "we said this... AND NOW THIS HAPPENS". You don't get to feel anything for the characters, especially the journey Heather has to embark to save Christopher.

Another horrendous thing about the movie is that theres literally no monsters to speak of. Bassett had an opportunity to make SH 3 monsters come to life but instead he choose to do generic horror/Hellraiser style creatures. The mannequin monster (seen in the trailer) is kinda interesting but we never get a chance to feel its connection to the world, its just there. An example, from the first movie, is the Janitor from the bathroom scene. That was an interesting idea since the character was seen hurting Alessa in the flashback so hes suffering for his sin. Revelations monsters are just there, they feel no connection to whats going on or have any revelance to anything. Pyramid Head is treated as a Pokemon in this movie.... yes... A POKEMON (thanks to my girlfriend for pointing it out). Hes there for nothing, even if they do tell his place in the world in one scene.

The Special effects are bad, and don't say "well its a low budget movie". The first movie also had a low budget but Christophe Gans smartly knew how to manage between sets and CGI, and that movie was made in 2006. Its cheap and it shows, Bassett could have made better choices and not go crazy with computer effects. I was always saying to myself "if they went and follow SH 3 a little closer and made it about Heather and her self journey" they could have made a better movie. Just have her go from location to location alone and not have all these extra characters and actors taking screen time.

Michael J. Bassett did a horrible job here, I thought I was watching an Uwe Boll movie. He can't write for shit, let alone make characters seem interesting. He also edited the movie in quick cuts, we never get a sense of the scope of the world (again, everything happens so fast). I followed his blog and interviews and felt his excitement for taking on the world of Silent Hill, but if he thinks this is a good job then I bet he feels pretty alone right now. Seems the studio felt the movie sucked also since they didn't have advanced screening for early reviews. They're trying to get as much money out of it this weekend before the public tears it up.

There are some nods to the game that made me smile in instances and made me mad that Bassett just didn't GET what Silent Hill is about and relied on saying things related to the game just to wink at us "jejeje see!! I played the game, or read the SH Wiki online!!". This is a real downer, I don't think I can give the movie a second chance or ever look at it again. Its depressing, like a lot of you this is my favorite franchise and to see it be disrespected by this movie AND its company is horrendous. If I rate it it would be a 2\10, 2 points just for the little nods to the game if it didn't have that it would be a 0.

Its depressing my friends....

Wow, what a total bummer. I've always felt that watching bad movies at a packed theater sometimes saved the viewing with all the excitement in the air, but with this one I'm not so sure anymore.

I thought it was actually pretty good, the ending seems kind of anti climactic but other than that I thought it was pretty fucking awesome. AI'll good morning to detail in a little bit

I couldn't get into it, no matter how hard I tried. Its just BAD, I can't think of anything positive to say. I was already disappointed by a movie I was eagerly awaiting this year which was Prometheus, and that was a movie I was waiting for almost 20 years to happen. I grew to like it eventually after some repeated viewings on blu-ray (but still hate some inconsistencies) but I just don't see how I can go back and watch Revelation and expect anything out of the huge cringe worthy disappointment I feel right now.

I understand, everyone is going to have a different opinion.

I thought it was fucking amazing, easy 8/10. It lost those two points because the ending was very anticlimactic. It was all tense, and then... thats it, they're done and free to leave. tf?

The atmosphere was incredibly well done, the 3D looked fantastic! The monsters were well done, there's plenty of action with them which is great because that was one of my beefs with the first movie. Music was once again, awesome! There were times where they sort of spoon fed you information about Alessa and the history of that whole ordeal. But it was a good mix.

They CLEARLY set this one up for another movie, as they mention
[Reveal] Spoiler:
Everyone has a different nightmare in Silent Hill

a few times, so there you go

Ummmm
[Reveal] Spoiler:
Rose unfortunately only appears once, sad I know, but at least she explains how Sharon gets out

Basically, like I said, I do have my beefs with it but all around I thought it was great! I went into it knowing the new Vincent situation, and yes I did roll my eyes at the
[Reveal] Spoiler:
cutesy kiss they share

But again, pretty much already knew that was coming. Not that big of a deal, I have an open mind with this.

OHHHH AND MY FAVORITE PART.... MJB actually did it!... and he didn't lie when I asked him,
[Reveal] Spoiler:
He made the walls in the other world bleed like in the game

I was so ecstatic when I saw it in Jack's Inn!!

As for the dialogue, everything that was shown in the commericals and spots like the infamous 'go to hell!!' shout, sounded SO MUCH BETTER when it was all together at the scene. Also the stupid green baseball faced security guard looks much better in the actual movie. It was clearly not even finished when they made the spots. And the carousel scene, was fucking intense, MoA was kindof chilling...

I just got back from the 10pm showing for Silent Hill and was actually impressed. Just dont expect it to be like the first movie which felt more like a movie, this one felt more like a game (cheesy acting and video-game dialogue). Heather was great, just like her character (aside from a really bitchy moment in her classroom scene). She was tough, never gave up on her search for the truth and she kicked ass. I liked that they used one of the boss fights from SH3 as story progress rather than...you know, a "boss fight". It was very fast paced so the movie doesn't give you that many calm moments. Scare factor was meh, it certainly wasn't as scary as the game but I did feel paranoid during several scenes, alot more than I could say about most of the first movie. I did jump once. Story was alright, they had the basics down, but with slight changes, and they explained a lot of things, so none of that "more questions than answers" type thing.

Like another poster mentioned, I loved the otherworld transitions. They had bleeding walls just like in the game.

Overall, I give it a 6.5-7/10. I'd definitely watch it again just to see all of the details they added to the sets (there were ALOT of things to look closely for that are either from the games or just new things that feel like they could be found in Silent Hill).

My only complaints:

-Where/How do they have the money to move from place to place so much?
-One scene from one of the screenshots weren't in the movie.
-
[Reveal] Spoiler:
A very early death.
(but it was a cool nod to SH4 where if you die in the otherworld, then in the real world you're still dead).

Also nice sequel setups, we get three (3 possible games could happen if a sequel happens, if not then a completely original story).

To people who have seen it: would you say the dialogue is on par with the first film, or worse? If worse, how much worse? That's really the only thing that would make me absolutely loathe the film, is if the dialogue feels like a first grade impromptu play.

Remember the first had horrible dialogue and acting? This was fine, it wasn't as cheesy as i thought. And actually i thought Sean bean pulled if Harry brilliantly! The only cheesy acting was young Sharon who was a little...ehhh... But Modelled also failed at some of her lines to, its just their age showing. Its not nearly as bad as you're making it out to be

Sorry for the screwed up spellings, my phone is screwing up

Well, having seen it barely an hour ago, I have to say that I enjoyed it. The movie is a completely different style and feel than the first movie, but I didn't really see that as a problem. I'll try to get some points out of the way, but i'm obviously no reviewer. I just don't want to write a bitch fest and would rather just give the details as I seen them. If it does seem like a bitch ridden "review", you'll have to forgive me and keep in mind that I did enjoy the movie overall.

Story: The story is a a good adaptaion of what Silent Hill 3 offered, but it is also even simpler than the source material. It really is just a sequel to the first movie, and besides some background information, does not add much or anything to it's plot. The movie was more of a thrill ride as it's been advertised, but again, it wasn't an issue for me.
There are not really any retcons as much as things added that are not fully explained, and the only retcon I seen was...
[Reveal] Spoiler:
Alessa not being whole at the end of the first movie. The only thing I could think of was that The Seal of Metatron split her soul again before pushing her out of the Otherworld somehow. But since it's never explained, that's nothing but headcanon.

Pacing: The pacing,as stated above, was good and bad. It was good for the fact that it was meant to be a rollercoaster esque movie. It's bad for anyone wanting to soak in what little story is there (which I stated isn't inherently bad), the characters, a feel for any emotion, or the atmosphere. What story was there was spread out better than the first film though, even if most of the exposition was rehashing the first films story and came up erratically. The movie had a habit of just going one room to the next after whatever event took place within said room.
It's hectically paced, so be prepared for that if you havn't seen the movie yet.

Characters: There's not much to say for the simple fact that, besides Heather, none are on screen for more than 5 minutes. A few examples...
[Reveal] Spoiler:
Dougles has 3 60 second scenes before he is killed by Claudia's monster. He is the first victom.
Suki is in the movie for 40 seconds. Yeah.
Vincent is kidnapped before even entering Silent Hill, and when rescued only stays with Heather for about 2 or 3 minutes. The love interest deal was horribly implemented also, which made him even worse. There was as much need for that as there was for Vincent's character withen the movie. Chris gets even less time on screen.

So it has a feeling of going too fast or having character there for nothing other than to be killed. Even for Heather there is no real character development. Vincent being the other main character, he was actually quite boring and uninteresting and his lines and scenes felt forced. The movie would have worked just fine without him and he had no reason to even be in it. Chris and Heather's relationship, though rarly seen in this very fast paced movie, were cute and the love could be seen when they were together.

Atmosphere: The movie hardly gave you time to soak it in atall, but it didn't really feel liek a typical Silent Hill. It didn't even seem like the first movie. Nearly the entire movie takes place in the "Darkness" of Silent Hill, but it just feels and looks like a typical post apocolyptic film. Not really dark or disturbing, or even hellish like the first. Just dark and decrepit. The reason this is is because...
[Reveal] Spoiler:
The Order of Valtiel has been living in it as if it WAS a post apocolytic world, which it kinda is I guess.

The music was excellent though. (didn't feel it needed it's own catagory.lol)

Monsters: As stated before, generic hellraiser-ish creatures. There are only 4 monsters in the film that are from the games, and one only gets a 15 second showing and is from the first movie. Anyone who's seen the trailers knows who they are. As for Pyramid Head, I liked his role in the movie. It made sence and followed what the first movie vaguly hinted at...somewhat. He didn't seem like a Pokemon though. One thing didn't make sence though...
[Reveal] Spoiler:
Pyramid Head being chained to the Merry-Go-Round...it makes sence WHY the Order done it, but HOW? How did they get this powerful creature and chain him? Made no sense to me. The fight between him and Claudia at the end was awsome to me though. I know people are gonna hate it and find it cheesy, but by God I enjoyed it so, yeah. lol

The spider mannequin, and that entire scene really, was really cheesy.
But there were a few eye rollers in the movie, and about 2 of them are in this scene alone.

Acting: The acting was acceptable for the most part, but one of Sean Bean's deliveries were very flat and seemed lazy, and some of Kit's deliveries felt off. Besides that though, I had no issues with the acting.

Script/Dialogue: It had some cringe worthy lines, but usualy consisting of only one word that could have been changed to make it seem more natural. It, to me, never reached the cringe worthiness of the first movie though. I had no problem with most of the dialogue...so that's really all there is to say about it. It's nothing special, but nothing horrible.

Overall, the movie is really fast, really campy, doesn't feel like the first film or any of the games, and honestly alot of fun. There are things you could nitpick the hell out of (and there are alot), but if taken for what it is and not for what people think Silent Hill is or should be, I don't doubt it can be enjoyed. There are about 5 to 7 scenes that will make you roll your eyes or cringe, but honestly, that little bit shouldn't ruin a movie. It isn't the best movie out, and I can't really compare it to the first film since it was so different ( Though the first was made better and is superior in nearly every way. Revelations was more fun while the first was smarter, better made, and more sohpisticated). The movie really isn't for anyone expecting Silent Hill 2 (not sure why you would). It did have quite a few nods to the games though, even going so far as to have a drawn picture of a certain monster and a poster from Silent Hill 3 in one of the school scenes to name two, so something to keep a look out for (they are not hard to spot). But I can say that I enjoyed it, and so did many in my theater. It's what the trailers make it seem, a fun Halloween movie, and I recommend before listening to every negative review to experience it for yourself. Just don't walk in as a prudish Silent Hill elitist. (Joke. Don't kill me..)
Looking back at my review, it may seem hard to understand why I enjoyed the film, but like I said, it's still enjoyable when your not the type of person expecting perfection. (or want a slow paced story driven movie honestly, but I enjoy both styles)
I hope this helped give an idea of what to expect.

Thank you! Pretty much summed it up. But this could and probably will go on for a while back and forth back and forth with everyone's opinions.
Someone should link this thread to imdb to piss off the trolls. Lol.

I probably would have liked this movie more if it wasn't a sequel to the original Silent Hill, because there were retcons EVERYWHERE. Remember Alessa killing the entire cult in the first movie? You know, the entire point of the film? Yeah, that didn't happen apparently.
[Reveal] Spoiler:
Because there are a shitload of fanatics from the same cult still living in the Otherworld. Someone please explain to me how the fuck a powerful psionic who has complete control over an alternate reality just "forgot" about an entire fucking clan of people. That's stupid as hell.

Then there's what SilentFantasy mentioned about the Sharon/Alessa retcon.
[Reveal] Spoiler:
In the first movie, Alessa, Dark Alessa and Sharon merged and became one person. Apparently, Bassett missed the entire ending sequence and didn't understand that, because now he's claiming they're still different entities. (And don't ask where adult Alessa is, he never bothers to explain that).

Then there's the beliefs of the cult:
[Reveal] Spoiler:
They are nowhere near the same as in the first movie. Bassett tries to make it out like they burned Alessa knowing she would survive, but then why did they burn Cybil and try to burn Rose? Bassett is just pulling shit out of his ass and trying to twist it so it doesn't look like a retcon. Well guess what, it is a retcon.
Also, Bassett flat-out lied to the fans when he wrote on his blog that the Order and the Brethren are two different cults.
But here's the REALLY funny thing. Dahlia and Christabella are sisters, so that means Vincent and Heather are
[Reveal] Spoiler:
cousins. Yay for incest!

The dialogue is mostly okay, but there are some truly cringe-worthy lines, especially Memory of Alessa's opening lines. Kit's acting was horrible, and his accent kept slipping out. Sean Bean's accent also showed up everywhere, but it did that in the first movie too, so...
I've already touched on the fact that there are multiple retcons of the first movie, but beyond that, the story was also stupidly convulated. Bassett had so many ways to introduce a new cult, but instead he muddles things into a headache-creating mass of confusion by trying to force two cults to become one. Characters appear and die seconds later, with no attempt at any character depth to them. It's like Bassett just went through a checklist of SH3 characters to make sure they were all there, but without actually thinking if they would help the movie or not. There's even an entire subplot that goes absolutely nowhere and adds nothing to the main plot.
Then there's
[Reveal] Spoiler:
the love story between Vincent and Heather. Not only are they cousins according to the first film's continuity (why the fuck do I know more about the first movie than the man who wrote the sequel?), but their romance is so fucking stupid. Vincent falls in love with Heather within hours of meeting her, even though he was taught to hate her his entire life. Really? Talk about shoehorning in a completely worthless romance.

One major part of the ending made no sense at all.
[Reveal] Spoiler:
Chris decides to remain in the fog world and search for Rose, which fits with his devotion to her. However, he refuses Heather's help in finding her. REALLY?? So the powerful psionic who controls the entire fucking reality that Rose is trapped in offers Chris her help, and HE SAYS NO??? That is ridiculous sequel bait if I ever saw it.

That said, there were some good scenes in the movie. The scene where Pyramid Head chops at the arms is so good that it's worth the ticket price alone. Everything about that sequence is absolutely perfect; the music, the movements, everything. The ending climax is orgasm-worthy. I absolutely fucking loved it. It made perfect sense to me, and it was so epic that I damned near came. The other monster scenes all seem to be well done, but I didn't see any symbolism to the monsters. Bassett claimed they had symbolism, but if it's there, I didn't see it.
To wrap up, Revelation wasn't very good, either as a stand-alone movie, or as a sequel. The monster scenes and music were great, but the acting, dialogue, convulated plot and endless retcons ruined it. It does not stand up to the depth of the first film, and looks like a trainwreck created by a man who thought his predecessor didn't know what he was doing.
On a side note, do stay and watch the beginning parts of the credits. They're actually pretty cool.

It's Claudia and Cristabella that are sisters, not Cristabella and Dahlia.
