Re: It's been confirmed that Silent Hills has been cancelled

It has NOT been confirmed. It's widely speculated, but nothing more than that at this moment.

There could be 101 reasons why it's been removed, the top of those being a) it's free, so they make fuck all money from it and b) E3 2015 is nearly upon us. Nothing has come into the news room at IGN or Dtoid. Right now, it's speculation and nothing more.

That said, the whole thing has been a clusterfuck. I know from Konami colleagues that things are messy as hell, and Konami are having to do a lot of damage control. I think it's weird that they took the logo off PT and THEN removed the demo (why bother, if the demo was due to be taken down?) but is has been, without question, one of the biggest buzzes about a Konami game for sometime, and has completely reinvigorated the series. They'd be crazy to just dump it. If it has been cancelled, it's because they had to - legally - cancel it. They wouldn't do it otherwise.

Balls.

Hopefully we'll get some kind of official statement as to what the hell happened. At least there's still FF5 :(

This is unfortunate. I have a feeling the Silent Hill series as a whole might be dead. I don't see why Konami can't have one of their Japanese studios work on a Silent Hill game. Just bring in a few key members from SH 1-4 that might still be employed by Konami. I doubt Konami would do that, though. They must really hate the series that much to make the cancellation of Silent Hills happen. A lot of people wanted to see a new, proper Silent Hill game thanks to Kojima and PT, and now it comes to this. smh

Konami is barely even a video game company anymore anyway. If they have half a heart they will sell the rights to the IP to an active video game company while they go off to make slot machines or whatever it is they do these days.

How's that ice-cream, Droo? Mind if I join you?

What a shame. Not only for the potential of Silent Hills, but the series as a whole. And the ripple effect it will have on the industry in general. Horror games are risky business. They were a niche genera until quite recently, and like most things that become prevalent in pop-culture, the trends will change.

It wasn't until indie game companies started putting out really fantastic horror games that were ultimately quite fiscally successful, that bigger brands were willing to invest in the horror genera and budget for AAA titles.

Unfortunately, most of these ended up being lack-luster and came in short on profits. The indie games did so well because they *were* indie, by horror fans, for horror fans. It takes more than fistfulls of cash to make a great game.

The horror trend is getting old, and with-out Konami and Silent Hills plowing through, I feel that interest-- from a business standpoint-- in horror will go back to where it began.
Oh, what a crippled existence nine-hundred years must lead.

Horror games were making a comeback before the Silent Hills reveal. The Evil Within and Alien Isolation did fairly well, and there's still Until Dawn and Fatal Frame 5 incoming.

The fact that Silent Hills is(?) cancelled has nothing to do with the genre, and doesn't diminish how phenomenally popular PT actually was. I don't think we have to worry about the horror game genre for now.

This is actually not that surprising. Konami has been gradually moving away from the video game industry for quite awhile now. Video games are only a small part of their business these days. They also have fitness clubs, trading cards, slot machines, toys, and anime. From what I've heard, they make most of their money from that stuff and not a whole lot from video games anymore, other than cell-phone games and their soccer franchise.

So although it may seem crazy for them to part ways with Kojima and cancel Silent Hill, I think that's very likely. I also have a feeling that MGSV will be the final Metal Gear game as well. If it wasn't clear before, parting ways with Kojima makes it very clear that Konami just isn't interested in the gaming world anymore. They've got other stuff going on now.

So yeah, Silent Hill as a franchise is as dead as it's ever been. That's not to say it can't be resurrected in the far future, old properties get resurrected all the time. But I doubt any new Silent Hill games will be coming out anytime soon.

^Yeah, it's a shame, but i can kinda understand. I know when i worked at a casino the managers told me that companies make ridiculous amounts of money from their slot machines.

I see a parallel in film. Crisp perfectly produced horror films (The Haunting, 1999) aren't very scary since they seem so proper. Great horror is usually rough around the edges (The Haunting 1963).

Crap was having a great weekend just to end it off with this news, bummer. I think it would be kinda foolish for Konami to cancel Silent Hills seeing as the demo/trailer had such a great reception and was, apparently, quite popular so they must know there was a lot of potential in it. Obviously nothing is set in stone just yet *crosses fingers* and I'll still hope for something, but on the other hand it seems like most of the big figures involved in the game have departed for one reason or another and as a result Silent Hills probably wont even be what any of us envisioned if it did materialize in the future.
Bitch, don't kill my vibe.

I totally agree that everyone overreacted to that random guys tweet, but considering Norman Reedus believes it's cancelled too doesn't bode well. I mean, you'd expect Konami to keep him in the know as to whether he still has a job or not?

Unless they really are that incompetent...

Well, they did put on that E3 press conference, so they may really be that incompetent.

I think it's not so much that they're incompetent, as they simply do not care. Video games are just not their main business anymore. Kojima was the last one who cared at that company.

Well....I've come out of hiding to express how much this blows. Possibly or officially cancelled, it looks like we may not see another Silent Hill game for a long time.
