[SH4 Tutorial] Walter Sullivan giving your problems?

Post by swedish »

Kick Walter’s Ass! v1.0

I've finally figured out a way to deal with Walter while taking minimal or even no damage. Two key things you have to do before you take him on:

1. Find the Spade in the Building World, 1st time. It can be found by taking the elevator back up to floor B8 after the cutscene with Richard and Little Walter. Go up the north door according to your map, and you’ll find a twisting hallway that will eventually lead to a Sword of Obedience and the Spade at the end. Watch out for Peter Wolls’ ghost though.

This is the best anti-Walter weapon in the game period. If you’ve noticed, he won’t move an inch at regular standard attacks with the exception of the Pickaxe of Despair, but a charge up attack from most weapons will make him flinch over in pain. This is where the Spade shines the best; with its speedy charge up time and great reach, it's perfect for socking the punk in the blue coat repeatedly without worrying about him retaliating.

If you didn’t find the Spade, don’t knock yourself on the head yet; the Rusty Axe also works beautifully, it just has a slower charge up time. If you don’t have the Rusty Axe either, then you might as well run away from Walter because trying to score a charge up attack hit on him with other weapons is extremely difficult.

2. Ditch Eileen. She’ll only get in the way, and you don’t want to risk her getting injured by not only Walter but from yourself as well. She might decide to run up and bop Walter on the head with her weapon just when you thrust forward the Spade, hurting Walter AND her.

…

Key Walter tactics

1. Get up close to him. The more closer you are to him, the more likely he’ll use his Steel Pipe or Chainsaw to thwack you. You want him to use the melee weapon, because if he uses his pistol he will shoot you repeatedly, making you flinch in pain and lose a bunch of health while he laughs at you. If he runs away like a little girl, chase him down and keep a safe distance.

Another added bonus is that if Walter does decide to draw his pistol, you can simply run right behind him and he’ll change his mind about shooting you. It’s easier to run around Walter if you keep the radius distance between him and you tight.

2. Know the distance of your charge up attack, and keep just slightly enough in range that the tip of the spade should poke Walter. Right before he attacks, walk up to him a little closer so you’ll guarantee yourself a direct hit.

It’s not necessary to wait for Walter to attack and then stab him right after; performing your charge up attack gives you temporary invulnerability, so keep on jabbing him whenever you can. Just don’t get too careless, or he’ll hit/shoot you before you have time to let go of the attack button to perform your move.

3. Hop back if he decides to hit you with his melee weapon. The hop is extremely useful for dodging his melee attacks; if he decides to take a swipe at you, simply hit the Square button while readying your weapon and Henry will do a backwards hop. Be sure to walk back to Walter as soon as he’s finished attacking.
Guaranteed to work! I had fun killing Walter around 8 times in the Forest World while losing around half of my health bar, and that's because I was experimenting with other weapons too (Stun Gun, Chainsaw).

A strategy for dealing with dual pistol Walter will come up shortly as soon as I encounter him.

Alright, I'm going to update this thread with a lengthy strategy on how to deal with Water Prison Walter, but since I don't have internet at my home, I'm going to summarize my page long walkthrough on dealing with John Woo Sullivan in one word:

Run.

Just run. It's extremely difficult to beat this Walter down. He won't be the Spade fodder you thought him as in the Forest World. It took me three health drinks and a first aid kit to finally realize this.

A more detailed walkthrough on how to avoid Walter will come within about a week.

One more thing to add: the Revolver is not as good as I thought against Walter. Fighting him again in the final boss battle, he only flinches after every third shot or more/less. The most important thing is that a single Revolver bullet will not make him bend over in pain, which is what I mistakenly believed.

Thus, save Revolver bullets for dangerous ghosts, Gum Heads, Twin Victims/Bottoms.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, I am beginning to hypothesize that Walter has a unique life bar. In order to reduce his health, one must make him flinch over in pain to do any damage; which means, whittling him with weapons that do NOT make him flinch over in pain unaffects his life bar.

For example, let's say that Walter had 100 health points. One regular blow from the Rusty Axe deducts 5 hit points, and a charge up swing deducts 15 hit points.

If I smacked Walter with an axe 25 times, then smack him with a powerful charge up attack from the axe 1 time, I would have inflicted only 15 damage and not 140 damage.

Another hypothesis that I have come up with is that whittling (hitting that doesn't make Walter bend over in pain) does inflict damage, but in order to make him fall to the ground or deliver the final blow during the boss fight, one must smack him with a powerful charge up attack.

So if I smacked Walter with an axe 25 times, then smacked him with a powerful charge up attack 1 time, I would have inflicted 140 damage; 40 damage beyond Walter's limit. I could whittle him all I want after his 100hp has dropped, but he won't fall to the ground/die if I don't deliver a powerful charged up blow. If I had given him 7 fully charged smacks, dealing 105 damage in total, that would have killed him after the 7th smack.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However, all that speculation is pointless because in order to attack Walter at all, you have to prevent him from attacking you by giving him a fully charged blow and making him bend over in pain. So I won't experiment to find that out.

UPDATE – experimented with several weapons on Forest World Walter.
Charge up Time (More stars mean faster charge up times)
#Golf Club – ***** ***
#Steel Pipe - ***** **
#Spade - ***** *
#Rusty Axe - ****
#Baseball Bat - ****
#Pickaxe of Despair – 0/**

*A regular attack from a Pickaxe does not require any charge up time.

Range (More stars mean longer range of charged up attack
#Rusty Axe - ***** **
#Spade - ***** *
#Pickaxe of Despair - **/*****
#Steel Pipe - ****
#Golf Club - ****
#Baseball Bat - ***

Damage (Number of fully charged hits required to make Walter fall)
#Pickaxe of Despair - 3/1*
#Golf Club - 3
#Rusty Axe - 3
#Baseball Bat - 4
#Spade - 5
#Steel Pipe - 8

*Takes three regular hits from the Pickaxe to bring Walter down, and only a single fully charged swing to temporarily put him out of commission.
When compared, the Rusty Axe, Golf Clubs, and the Pickaxe of Despair all take the lead in dealing the most damage, with the Pickaxe of Despair being able to fall Walter with a single charge up blow! However, two other extremely important factors must be considered of a weapon: charge up time and range.

The range of the Rusty Axe takes the lead again with the Spade closely behind. The Pickaxe of Despair also has considerable range, but there’s one more factor to be added it yet.

In the charge-up times, the Golf Club is the clear winner – it was insanely quick in-game, even faster than the Steel Pipe! The Spade is also clearly quick to charge up with, making it an excellent choice against Walter.

So, what’s the best anti-Walter weapon? IMO, the golf clubs clearly take the lead. Although its range is lower than most weapons, it’s extremely high damage and frighteningly quick charge up time negates its negative aspects. There’s a reason why Konami decided that the golf clubs should break after prolonged use. Hopefully, you’ve collected about 2-3 that aren’t broken by the time you first encounter Walter; the Rusty Axe/Spade/Baseball Bat are more than good enough against standard enemies. So save your golf clubs to pitch Walter like Tiger Woods on crack, and you’ll do great.

If you don’t have Golf Clubs, the Rusty Axe or the Spade will also do well. Both have about the same range – if you prefer finishing Walter without having to dance and chase him around too much, use the Spade for its quick charge up time. If you’re skilled and patient enough to deal with Forest Walter without having to take much/any damage, than go for the Rusty Axe. If you just want to dispose of Walter as quickly as possible, the Pickaxe is good, but be aware that Walter might sometimes change his mind about attacking you and running away at the last moment, leaving you hitting nothing but the ground. But then again, he usually won’t run away when you’re up in front of him; he’ll try to gun or smack you down.

The Baseball Bat is actually not a good weapon to hit Walter with. It’s got the relatively slow charge time of the Rusty Axe, but is less damaging and has much less range. I’d recommend the Steel Pipe over the bat, since its longer range and super quick charge up time more than makes up for its lack of damage.

-----

So now that you know this, go ahead and load up that save in Forest World 2nd Time and laugh your ass off as you whallop Walter to a bloody pulp with this knowledge in mind.
