Stupidest creatures ever?

Post by kennsj »

I'm about halfway through the game (I think), and I'm getting a little annoyed by some of the creatures in SH4.

I like the Gum Heads, and the ghosts can be kind of frightening, especially...
PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER_SHOW PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER:
Cynthia's ghost
...but the Patient creatures and the wheelchairs in the hospital are just stupid. I mean, a creature that burps when you hit it? Wheelchairs that just run up and down a hallway, then spin crazily when they hit each other? Is this meant to be scary?

(If there's a thread that covers this, please redirect me. I browsed the entire SH4 section and couldn't find one, but mods usually know better.)

Personally, I thought the gum heads were silly and didn't frighten me in the least. I was just like "aww! monkeys!" and then proceeded to smack them around lol.

The patients were wicked intimidating until you hit them and they burped (hit them at the top of stairs and they go burping all the way down, hilarious! :D )

All the rest of them were quite dementing and scary looking so I enjoyed them. Yes, even the wheelchairs. Something about seeing their shadows rolling around at first on the walls like that bugged me out lol. The twin babies pointing and whispering "receiver" at you too was just awesome.. ahhh scared the crap outta me the first time. :)

Heheh. Well, they worked for me. Something creepy about the way an angry chimp moves and sounds has always creeped me out a little.

See the music video for Basement Jaxx's "Where's Your Head At?" for another point of reference for creepy-as-hell monkeys.

And the Patient down the stairs! Yeah! Funny as hell, but way stupid for a Silent Hill monster.

I think I better not look at this thread any more until I finish the game. I haven't seen the twin babies yet.

Oh crap! I'm so sorry for that name drop there lol. I should've thought to tag that.. But I have saw that video for "Where's your head at?" and it did creep me out a little but also gave me quite a good laugh at some parts. :D

It's been awhile since I played, but if you're halfway through, shouldn't you have seen a twinfucker by now?

yesh, I was just playing the game and you see the "twinfuckers" in the water prison before you see the patients at the hospital. I'd have to say that the only monster in that one that I didn't care for was the hummers.

No, you're right. The monster design for Silent Hill 4: The Room was a complete failure, save for the ghosts. I'd probably enjoy playing the game a lot more if there were nothing but ghosts, but alas. . . .

The Twin Heads were probably the only monsters I really enjoyed, but they sound much less intimidating in-game than in the SH4 intro movie. I would've shooted my pants if they squealed like babies when they sprinted.

Yeah, I remember watching the trailer over and over and getting chills during the twin parts.

Okay, so "twin babies" = "twinfuckers" = Twin Heads. Gotcha.

I always thought the two faces on that creature look a bit like Japanese Noh masks, rather than babies. Example...

IMO they were really effective in the Water Prison (they're pretty scary in an enclosed space), but they're crap in the forest.

I thought the Dogs. Monkeys, twins, chimps, wallmonsters, baby wall monsters in appartment and ghosts did their job well.

I liked the way the monsters where dessigned, it's just that their function was hell of annoying at times. Specially the ghosts.

I wasn't too fond of the patients, wheelchairs, the big worms at the first train station, bats or the worms sticking up from the ground. I didn't feel they scared, but just made the game harder.

Now if I have to pick a favorite monster that would be the big monster
PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER_SHOW PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER:
with Walter Sullivan at the end, the one you need ti kill with the spears. I still don't know what that thing is, I played the game over 2 months so I lost a lot of the flow in the story by doing so. Another thing I thought was really scary was the huge Eileen head at the hospital, when the camera angle turned I jumped out of my seat. That probably doesn't categorize as a monster though

Toadstools and wheelchairs. Do those even count as "monsters"?

I don't mind how they were designed, but how they were used. For example, the Twinfuckers shouldn't exist in multiplicity. And while the Wall Man design is decent, they seem too "programmed" into the game, same with the wheel chairs. The Toadstools/Whitestool and slugs (Tremer?) are quite bland. The ghosts aren't bad, though sometimes excessive.
Greedy Worm, Hummer, and the apes are fine with me though. I have this mild fear towards monkeys so that works for me. Who wants to be with evil monkeys? Rid of them!

So do I. I laughed the first time I saw one of them.

The Patients are pretty silly, too. The burping... Come on!

I completely forgot about those stinkin slugs. oh man. it's like, one second you're trying to smack a "twinbitch" with a hatchet and the next the slug is esploding onto your foot which causes a little damage but leads to the "twinbitch" slapping you or jumping on you or running away...why do they run? are they afraid of the receiver of wisdom?

I agree that the Gum Heads were pretty good monsters; they were strange creatures and seemed Silent Hill-worthy. (Remember the Rompers in SH1?) But the constant sounds from the Gum Heads nearly drove me mad. It was fear-inspiring and very annoying at the same time.

As for the Patients, the burping may be funny, but at least their appearance is pretty intimidating, right? I think they at least look like they belong.

The self-moving wheelchairs... yeah, that was stupid. At least it can still create a challenge for you when there are several of them, since they can affect your health.

I do think the wall monsters were a pretty nice touch. Those things still frighten me.

I'm one of those who is very annoyed by the ghosts, but I'm okay with them as they pertain to the story. And hey, during the first playthrough, they do a pretty good job of scaring, in my opinion.

The twin monsters are very weird, and they make disturbing sounds. Satisfying to kill. They're okay in my book. I agree that they're more effective/threatening in smaller areas rather than in the forest.
